Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Taryn Young is a brilliant software developer, but after she allows her heart to fool her head, she finds herself in more trouble than she could have ever imagined. She is now the sole suspect in a major FBI case and must convince the agents in charge that she, too, is a victim. Agent Grayson Hall has been assigned to her case, and despite his professional judgment and his partner’s instincts, he wants to believe Taryn and protect her. The two forge an uneasy alliance as she seeks evidence proving her innocence. The more they learn, the more danger they put themselves in, along with those around them. Mills (Attracted to Fire, 2011) takes readers on an explosive ride. The terror is all the more chilling because it could easily be a headline story on the nightly news, and Mills’ characters spring to life through their fears, strengths, and quirks. A story as romantic as it is exciting, Firewall will appeal to fans of Dee Henderson’s romantic suspense stories. --Carolyn Richard

Review

...VERDICT In her series launch, the Christy Award-winning Mills ("Call of Duty" series) skillfully builds a menacing overall tone, and the tension level rises as layers of lies are peeled away in multiple plot twists. This novel, which takes off at a breakneck pace with a narrative arc that could have been ripped from today's headlines, will greatly appeal to fans of James Patterson's "Alex Cross" series and readers who enjoy psychological thrillers. (Library Journal ★)

Mills once again demonstrates her spectacular writing skills in her latest action-packed work. From the opening sequence that quite literally begins with a resounding bang, the story moves at a fast pace that will keep readers riveted until the climactic end. The cast of characters, including the villains, is diverse and well fleshed-out, particularly given the widespread scope of the story. It's great to see an intelligent heroine who's actually able to showcase her smarts. (4 Stars - Romantic Times)

A woman risks her heart and then her life in Firewall (Tyndale House, $14.99, 416 pages, ISBN 9781414389936) by DiAnn Mills. Genius software developer Taryn Young thinks she finally has everything: a great job, a man who loves her, a brand-new marriage. But disaster strikes before the honeymoon can begin when an airport bombing injures Taryn, and her husband disappears. At the hospital, it’s clear the authorities suspect Taryn might be involved in the death and destruction. FBI Special Agent Grayson Hall’s gut tells him the beautiful woman is truly bewildered by what’s come to pass, but that doesn’t stop him from investigating her and the man she married. Fingers are pointed in several directions, but as the truth comes to light, so does more danger for Taryn and Grayson. When a child is kidnapped, the two must work together to stop evil in its tracks. A skillful blend of suspense, romance and spirituality, this book’s intricate storyline will keep readers guessing. (Book Page)

In this first installment of Christy Award–winning Mills’s Deadly Pursuit trilogy, beautiful but socially awkward Taryn Young marries Francis “Shep” Shepherd after a brief courtship. Acutely aware of the national importance of her software design skills, she is hooked by Shep’s appreciation of her work. But as they board a plane for their honeymoon, a bomb explodes. Shep disappears; airport tapes show him fleeing just before the explosion. FBI agent Vince Bradshaw accuses Taryn of planting the bomb with Shep. But Bradshaw’s partner, Grayson Hall, believes Taryn’s protests of innocence. Hall and Taryn join forces to find the connection between the bombing and the security software she is developing—and to find their respective paths back to God. The murder of Taryn’s best friend Claire and the abduction of Claire’s daughter, Taryn’s godchild, raise the stakes higher. The surprising identities and motives of those villains, and the growing trust between Taryn and Grayson, will keep readers turning pages in this fast-moving, intricately plotted thriller. Book Summary: After a whirlwind romance, Taryn Young is preparing to board a plane at Houston International Airport, bound for a dream honeymoon, when a bomb decimates the terminal. Injured but still alive, she awakens to discover her husband is missing and they’re both considered prime suspects in the attack. Further, the FBI is convinced her husband isn’t who he appears to be. Agent Grayson Hall’s number-one priority is to catch those responsible for the day’s act of terror. All evidence is pointing to Taryn and her new husband. But his instinct tells him her pleas of innocence are genuine. Is her naiveté just for show, or could she truly be another victim of a master scheme, possibly linked to the software she recently developed for her company? With both their lives and reputations on the line, and the media outcry for justice increasing with each passing minute, Taryn and Grayson have no choice but to trust one another . . . and pray they can uncover the truth before they become two more casualties.

Review: From the moment I started the book right through the very end it was non-stop! The action and story was moving so fast that I was on pins and needles for the majority of the time. I had to put the book down just to calm my pounding heart. The twists and turns were fantastic! It was as if the bad guys always knew where she was and there were so many of them that I was just daunting at times. Taryn was a multifaceted character with lots of personality and easy to like and empathize with. She was exceedingly smart, surprising in the things she did and well written. This is the first book by DiAnn Mills that I have read and I will be looking forward to reading many more.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Tyndale House Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

Format: Paperback
Diann Mill’s latest book, Firewall, lived up to its title. It was fast -paced from the beginning chapter when a bomb erupted in an airport, separating newly married Tayne Young from her new husband, Step. The story throws in a couple of different twists as the story progresses along. The character of Tayne Young as an introvert was talked about, but not truly believable. Even though, I did enjoy the thrill of the hunt for the missing little girl, Zoey, and the mastermind behind the explosion and the hunt for Tayne’s head, Through the quick moving plot for the first three hundred pages, the budding relationship between Tayne and Grayson kept me wondering how their emotions would play out in the end. Struggling through the hurt from Step and the troubles from Grayson’s childhood, Tayne and Grayson lean on the feelings developing inside.
But the one down side I discovered was the ending of the story dragged a little. It appeared Mills didn’t know what to do with Tayne or the intertwining of the bad guys, so she kept having Tayne captured by the bad guys, rescued by Grayson, and captured again before Grayson freed her. The ending took too long to explain. I skipped a couple of pages by the time I read to page 290 because I figured she would be caught again and allow Grayson to come to her rescue minutes before anything horrible would happen. To Mill’s credit, the surprising identity of the person behind all the killings and bombings was someone I did not see coming. She did a good job at keeping this bad guy’s identity a total secret. Being a huge fan of DiAnn Mills books, I would still recommend every one of her book.
If you love fast-paced, detective stories, you will truly enjoy this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest reviews. All of my opinions are my own.

Firewall by DiAnn Mills

Taryn Young is super-computer geek, writing programs to strengthen the US economy. As she is about to leave on her honeymoon after a whirlwind courtship of three months, a bomb destroys the airport terminal and her husband a few hours is missing.
When she is targeted as a suspect in the bombing, she must put all her skill into proving her innocence as the evidence mounts that the man she married deceived her. She must convince FBI Agent Grayson Hall to trust her.

Grayson’s focus is to find those responsible for the terrorist act. As the case unfolds, suspicions grow that there is a mole in the FBI who is letting the bad guys know every step of the investigation, including Taryn’s whereabouts and her efforts to assist.

Those closest to Taryn are murdered or die under mysterious circumstances. Taryn’s three-year-old godchild, Zoey, is kidnapped. Taryn redoubles her efforts to find who is behind the plot and to save Zoey.

With more twists and turns than a rollercoaster, Ms. Mills takes the reader on an exciting adventure of suspense and danger. Surprises come one after the other, keeping readers on their toes as new details are revealed and people are not who we thought they were. Along the way, Mills weaves in a believable romantic subplot between Taryn and Grayson, full of tension and tentative yearning.

I found Taryn to be a complex heroine—strong, capable, determined, yet vulnerable as she copes with physical pain from her injuries and the emotional loss of the man she thought loved her joined with her fears for the safety of Zoey. She is driven to save Zoey, prove her own innocence, and thwart the plots of those who would destroy her country.
