Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In order for a business partnership to truly work, both parties must believe they are getting something of equal value. Alice North is almost certain her deal with Drake Sebastian is going to be a success. Drake needs Alice’s help in tracking down a long-lost treasure buried on Rainshadow Island. Two of the Old World crystals from the treasure are missing and wreaking paranormal havoc. In exchange, Drake will help Alice find out who murdered her ex-husband, Fulton Whitcomb. Ethel, Alice’s ex-mother-in-law, wrongfully believes Alice killed her son, and unless Alice produces the real murderer, Ethel will continue to make her life miserable. Working together with Drake under the guise of a marriage of convenience makes perfect sense to Alice until she begins wondering what it would be like to “really” be married to Drake. In her usual spot-on fashion, Jayne Ann Krentz, writing as Castle, serves up another riveting installment in her futuristic Harmony series, and the resulting fast-paced, witty, sexy romance is guaranteed to keep readers enthralled with its danger-spiked plot and compelling characters. --John Charles

Great characters, fun continuation of a very good story.

I'm a fan of Jayne Ann Krentz, who writes as Jayne Castle for her futuristic novels.

I hope this is a series like her "Harmony" books, and not just a trilogy. While "Deception Cove" answered a lot of questions from the first two books, there is certainly plenty of mysteries and avenues to explore for future stories.
This novel was unique in that none of the action, (that we're let in on), actually takes place in the Preserve. Slade and Harry spend almost the entire story inside the Preserve, trying to rescue a group from a religious cult calling themselves, "New Dawn". We don't hear much about that until the very end, and not much then.
That's o.k. though, because there is plenty going on in other parts of the island to worry about! That's where Alice North and Drake Sebastian come in. Both are powerful light talents, and both feel responsible for the increasing danger on the island, (for different reasons).
So, after a quick MC to protect Alice from her obsessive ex-mother-in-law, Drake and Alice head to the island to find the answer to what is causing the psi storms in and around the island, and what to do to stop them.
Several favorite characters from the first two books help out, and others make a brief appearance.
I don't want to add any spoilers, so will only say, there is easily enough matierial in this story for two novels. I'm hoping Ms Krentz agrees, and we will get a chance to return to "Rainshadow Island"...Soon!
If you haven't read the first two books in the series, I would strongly advise that you read them in order! The dust bunnies alone are worth the price!

I have enjoyed all 3 books in this series, but I think this one may have been my favorite.
I really liked Alice and Drake a lot. Both had overcome a lot in their lives, but just kept going without becoming bitter or self -pitying. This is particularly true for Alice as one of the few orphans in a society that places enormous value in family and connections.
I hope this is not our last visit to Rainshadow as it seems there is plenty more to discover there.
I read this in a few hours as soon as it arrived on my kindle and I think it will be one I will definitely read again. This one is just delightful. It was fun to see past characters and I do love those adorable dust bunnies--at least they are adorable until you see their teeth!

The lead dust bunny in this novel is Houdini. Houdini rescues the lost human Alice from the paranormal Preserve on Rainshadow Island owned by the Sebastian family. Houdini and Alice go on the run hiding from her evil ex-mother-in-law (Alice has my full sympathy). Houdini helps Alice make a living in small theaters where Houdini appears as a magician and Alice as his assistant.

Due to escalating abnormal paranormal events on Rainshadow Island, the human Drake, a member of the Sebastian family, tracks down Houdini and Alice for their psychic help in locating and fixing the old Earth rocks causing fog, violent storms, power outages, and giant mutant insects on Rainshadow Island.

A thrilling dust bunny adventure with an amusing human romance thrown in. I do love these dust bunny novels.

JAK is continuing her (regrettable) new tendency to not include the entertaining secondary characters who were such a hallmark of her earlier works, which is disappointing. Charlotte and Rachel eventually appear, but not until almost half-way through the book, and to be truthful, they don't make much of an impact. As a previous reviewer noted, Slade and Harry are absent until almost the end.

It took me a while to read "Deception Cove" (it arrived Monday afternoon, as Amazon had mailed it on Saturday), as it starts slowly. Nothing much happens - after Alice and Drake meet at the beginning and join forces - until about 1/3 of the way into the book. It's mainly a lot of backstory being provided, i.e. talking. I had reached chapter 8 when it dawned on me how little had actually taken place. Starting with chapter 9 things begin to get more interesting, but prior to that, not so much.

It fascinates me how JAK manages to think of all this stuff! I'd pay money to have such a vivid imagination and be capable of inventing alternate worlds such as Harmony. It was wonderful to see the first bit of "After Dark" included at the end of the book, as it's one of my favorites (Chester was *such* a character, even though he was never present in the book when alive), and it's possible there are readers who are coming in late, as it were, and haven't read it yet. They are in for a treat.

This is another wonderful adventure written by this author. The characters are so intriguing and heartwarming. The characters including the dust bunnies are so great and play such an interesting roll in the stories of this series. ENJOY.

I absolutely love this author and the stories she writes. I am able to disappear into whatever place she writes about along with all adventure that comes with it. That is the best gift an author can give a reader. All I'm going to say is give her a try. If you like the paranormal genre you should like her books. As for me...waiting on the next release.

It is always comfortable to return to Krentz world. This book is a pleasant diversion. It lacks the humor and crackle of earlier books. I appreciate the strong positive gay and sometimes lesbian characters.
