Review

Coble provides plenty of excitement for readers who enjoy her unique combination of cozy setting and action-packed mystery.
Publishers Weekly

Coble's second Hope Beach book returns to the stunningly described Outer Banks locale. The suspenseful mystery, coupled with developing romance, creates a lively, page-turning novel.

This novel would best be described as a Christian romantic suspense, that is, no serious swearing, no sex and a certain amount of discussion of prayer and seeking God's help. IMHO, this is only a so-so book so if you are just looking for a romantic suspense I would say keep looking. Maybe those specifically looking for this subgenre would be satisfied with the novel.

The book is about the budding romance between a woman, Amy, whose brother apparently died of an accident although Amy doesn't believe it, and a Coast Guard officer, Curtis, whose sister was killed, also apparently of an accident, 2 weeks before Amy's brother died. The murder victims were also apparently lovers and had a young daughter together who Curtis is now raising. So, Amy and Curtis investigate what happened to their siblings since the police are dismissing the deaths as accidental.

The good things:
Most writers are able to bring a fair amount of emotion to a story about a young child, particularly a young child at risk, and the author does a pretty good job of this. Also, the heroine is a nurse-midwife and there is a fair amount of emotion elicited related to her work helping deliver babies as well as related to her own health problems. Finally Coble elicits emotion related to Curtis' fear that he may lose his niece.

Both protagonists are likeable and brave.

There was suspense in the plot line--I seldom stopped reading because the novel was going too slow.

The so-so things:
I thought the clues about the deaths were a little too obvious. I guessed early on what the "secret" behind the deaths was although I did not guess until the end all of the intricacies, some of which were, frankly, over-the-top.

Set on Hope Beach, a fictional location along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I was drawn back into the setting with the characters I came to enjoy in Tidewater Inn. This book is a multi-layered mystery with a wonderful blend of romance. Amy Lange has returned to Rosemary Cottage to mourn the death of her brother. Curtis Ireland still isn't over the death of his sister. The two connect over Curtis' niece Raine. They determine to get to the bottom of what happened and twists keep pitting them against each other even as they are drawn together.

This book kept me guessing even as I anticipated some of the twists. My daughter was absolutely convinced I could never anticipate everything that would happen. She was right -- though I did unwind more of it than she did! I love a book that keeps me guessing. I enjoy books with a satisfying romance. Put the two together, and I am a very happy reader. This book is perfect for those who love romantic mysteries.

3.5 Stars actually.
This story takes place in the beautiful Outer Banks of South Carolina at Rosemary Cottage. Rosemary Cottage is a cottage that has been in Amy Lang's family for generations, and she is hoping to figure out if the loss of her brother, Ben, was really an accident or not, as well as grieve his loss. This has been bothering her since it happened. She is determined to find out more about what happened because to her, Ben's strength as a swimmer does not add up to an 'accident', in her mind. She has a gut feeling something is off, and she is even ready to move her midwifery practice there to that location to work if that is what it will take her to find out. She misses her brother dearly, and won't accept his death until she knows for sure what really happened.
Meet Curtis Ireland, a Coast Guard Officer who lives in the area. He has a sister, Gina, who also died in a swimming accident as well. She, too, is a very strong swimmer, and had dreams of winning a gold medal in swimming in the Olympics until 'life' happened to her. That life is now a seven month old little girl she named Raine. In the Prologue of the book we learn her death may very well 'not' have been an accident, the way it was described. Now Raine is left to Curtis to raise, and we get to see just how he handles this huge task!
We have two people who are on a quest to find out exactly what happened to their siblings in what sounds like very similar swimming accidents. Both Amy and Curtis are single, not necessarily looking for love, yet both have so much in common, right to the loss of their siblings. Can and do sparks end up flying between Amy and Curtis while on this quest? This is, after all, Contemporary Romantic Suspense, so it could be!

I like an easy read, but I don't like books that just don't make sense. From the beginning I was skeptical. I'm a mom of 3 and know the baby in this book was too young to be talking and doing things that the author described. The events were predictable and very little suspense. The romance was not well developed and blossomed from nothing to marraige overnight. The main characters were involved in a car bombing, but shortly after were on a date??? I would not recommend this book.

I'm a huge fan of Colleen Coble's romantic suspense novels, and Rosemary Cottage did not disappoint! I liked Amy and Curtis right away--even if they didn't like each other! Both of them were struggling to deal with the deaths of their siblings, which added a deeper dimension to both of them. There was so much chemistry between the two of them as well. It seemed that every time they talked, they alternated between intense attraction and heated arguments. Of course, their fierce loyalty to their respective siblings didn't help in the midst of those arguments!

My enjoyment of the novel was probably enhanced a little as I read about half of it during a power outage due to a thunderstorm. Nothing makes a suspense novel more suspenseful than reading it in a dark room, by flashlight, with a storm raging outside. Feel free to re-create this scenario when you read Rosemary Cottage! :)

If you enjoy suspense novels, you are sure to love Rosemary Cottage! I highly recommend! [4.5 stars]

I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Nelson and Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.
