I am a fan of first time authors, but this novel is poor even for a first novel. The biggest issue is tense and voice. Just read a few chapters and you feel that something is off. The author skips from the perspective of various characters while using the third person and somewhat disjointed dialog. This would be ok except that it is only one of the things wrong with this book. The author places her main character in a nearly unwinnable scenario early in the story, multiple stab wounds/massive blood loss, just when we are pulling for the main character, the story jumps ahead and she is somehow safe. Another key character is introduced and criticized for dressing like her Grandma. After learning more about this character it is suddenly sprung on the reader that she is blind. Is it fair to criticize a blind person's choice of clothing. Another hard to swallow aspect of the story is the collapse of society. In a matter of hours biker dudes have taken over a university. Maybe over time, but is a university the first place a biker gang would go hours after the US starts to fall apart?
I think this author has a good premise, but suffers from lack of editing. Maybe the picture on the cover using a faceless female in short shorts should be a clue. Regardless, this does inspire one to try their own hand at an e-novel.

This book was strange to me. I started off not liking it, and those books don't usually get 5-star reviews. The POV is third person, but it's a much different third person than the one I use when writing. Ms. Morris tells it from a present-tense frame, whereas my books and most authors I read tell it from a past-tense frame. It takes some getting used to, but the characters make it easier to adjust.

Ms. Morris does an excellent job creating her characters and getting us to like them. You can't help but feel for Reagan, knowing what she's been through, and yet at the same time you also are frustrated because she can't see that John genuinely likes her. The same holds true for Kelly and Hannah.

I'd say the only complaint I have with this book is that Ms. Morris skips around just a little too much. We don't really know what happens to Reagan on her trip from Ohio State to the farm in Tennessee. That's a good distance to travel, and in a SHTF scenario, it wouldn't be something you could do in a night or even a couple days. It also would've been nice to get some more of John, Derek, and Kelly's journey to the farm. The reason I don't dock this book any stars, is because adding these things in would only enhance the story, but not having them in doesn't take away from it. The complaints are ones I experienced with my own debut novel, and are ones that I'm working to correct so it becomes a better story.

A great first book in a great series. Kate Morris has become a new favorite author of mine in this genre!

I simply loved this book. The attraction between the main characters is simply riveting and the storyline is one of the best I've read. You can't help but love every person in this book. Do yourself a huge favour and read it. Can't wait till the next one.

I loved this book. I am not a author so I can't find a hundred things wrong with it, I do know the book got my attention from the very first and didn't let go. I love the characters and how the author didn't dismiss the need for children, and involved them in the plot. They took smoothly from one characters view to the next and kept the story line going.
There is a couple of holes that could have been explained better, like how one of the Rangers got shot. I would have liked to have read a little more about Reagan fight to get home from college. But all in all I am very satisfied with the book

This book started out fast, then slowed down through the middle. Then the characters and plot came together and I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next nook in the series

This book is great. What an awesome story revolving around family....a family living by means that most in this day and age have forgotten. I mean, who can even keep a tomato plant living these days?

The only issue I had with the book was how quickly things went south. Bikers and gangs looting, pillaging, killing, and raping on the first day? That seems a little far-fetched. This is fiction though, so the author is forgiven, as the book kept me entertained from start to finish.

when I first got this book honestly I wasn't sure. I have read books like this before but it was of a scfi nature by Kyle West , I decided to give it 50 pages and I'm so glad I did. The characters make this a page turner. I will admit that the chapters are a bit long but if you give this book a chance you will not be sorry. I just got the second book and as soon as I finish this review I'm gonna start it

Could not put this and the second book down. Anxiously awaiting final book. There were a few things that just worked out too well and not being a prepper I wondered does anyone really prepare that well. I don't know. However in this instance there was a fair amount of early indicators that something serious was up. I hope people don't descend to base level quite this quick but hoping doesn't make it so. That said I really loved all of the characters. The men were men and the women though all different were strong in their various ways but all were allowed times of human frailty. Family values were strong but all was not always rosy. There was even a hint of faith that didn't rub at all against my atheism. Amazing. The views of military life felt real.
For a look at the world after the fan has been severely soiled it made me feel happy. Who to let in and who to exclude from "The Farm" was a difficult decision that I queried on occasion but that would be an ongoing issue that would never get easy.
I did nothing else all weekend I could not put them down. Well written, flowed nicely, no editing mistakes that I noticed. I hope this author writes frantically as I just want more.
