Death and the Empress have tangled in many past games (or lives), but this time Death is determined not to succumb to her charms, while Evie can’t forget her hopes of building a game-ending alliance and her love for a mortal man. Most of the book focuses on Evie’s action-packed attempts to find a way out of the life-and-death arcana game, but it transitions suddenly and without warning into a spicy romance novel for the last third, and the sudden turn of the plot may thwart readers looking for more of one thing or the other. Fans of Poison Princess (2012), however, will still dig it, and a juicy cliff-hanger ending will amp up their appetites for further tarot-based adventures. Grades 9-12. --Cindy Welch

“The prose crackles with energy and interest, the content is on target in terms of current demand, and this could be the next Twilight.” (

“My brain is near exploding with how crazy good this story was… An exceptionally well written plot that will have you turning pages and sticking up a ‘do not disturb’ sign. You won’t want to be interrupted. Especially when Jackson has his smexi Cajun mojo in full swing.” (novelsontherun.blogspot.com)
