About the Author

J.D. Horn was raised in rural Tennessee and has carried a bit of its red clay with him while traveling the world, from Hollywood to Paris to Tokyo. He studied comparative literature as an undergrad, focusing on French and Russian in particular. He also holds an MBA in international business and worked as a financial analyst before becoming a novelist. When not writing, he is likely running, and he has race bibs from two full marathons and about thirty half marathons. He and his spouse, Rich (proud father of Rebecca and Madeline), along with their three pets, split their time between Portland, Oregon, and San Francisco, California.

**** Possible minor spoilers for The Line Book 1 of this series****

I love stories about witches and I am completely enamored with all things southern. So a series that combines those two aspects a family of Witches in Savanna automatically gets a bump up in my book. The Source continues a few months after the Line ended.

Mercy, always thought she was non-magical. She grew up in a family of witches believing that the family power skipped over her. That was until the Line, a magical barrier between this world and a world filled with demons chose her to be its anchor. Mercy is playing catch up, she has more power than anyone before her, but no control. With the help of her family, a voodoo Queen and a Golem brought to life she must figure out how to control this new power and become the Witch she is meant to be.

I enjoyed following Mercy through her journey to tap into the power she holds. As heroines go she is pretty strong. She has a lot on her plate with trying to find her sister Maisy who has been magically trapped, her supposedly dead mother showing back up, Witch training and her engagement to Peter along with the pregnancy. It is difficult to balance and Peter is non-magical and has been kept in the dark about some things going on in Mercy’s life.

-- 'When you’re lying to protect someone, there’s a certain sense of nobility to it—you know, or you think you know, that you’re freeing your loved ones from the weight of the knowing. I myself understood this from having lied to Peter about Maisy. But I felt a little less noble about it with every other falsehood that had followed.'

It’s easy to like Mercy, she has a big heart and loves her entire quirky family, a family that seems to have more skeletons in their closets than the Kennedys.

I looked over some of the other reviews and I was pretty surprised by what a lot of others had to say. One person that had issues with the book said that it was well written from a language and grammar stand point. Yikes. Compared to highschool students? Well, sure. But saying that something is well written means that the author has an ear for language that brings life to the story, not just that there are no obvious mistakes. The language here is clunky and overthought. "She looked up at me, the horror in her eyes cutting into me as a razor had once cut into her flesh." Oh please. I really enjoy this genre of urban fairytales, but take a look at Charles deLint and this stuff just looks like drivel. I suffered through this book and in the end I enjoyed the conclusion of the story, but I am so glad that I only borrowed the book. The voice of the narrarator is so very annoying. Really, who wants to hear a person acting like a ninny inside the space of their own head? The author spent forever spending time building minor plot inventions, I guess so that there would be "character development" but there really was no character development besides the main character. Course, I am not sure there was a lot of development there either, because every thought just brings us back to 'ninny.' I did really like the character of Jilo, but that was it. The language could be worse, but that doesn't mean that it is good or that it doesn't get really old by the time you get to the end.

"Shock sent the sensation that I was falling from my head to my feet, and then back up again. My mouth gaped open but no words came out."
I can't explain how many times Mercy is not able to make a sound/scream/etc.

Overall, pretty good.

Mostly enjoyable, if a bit romancy for my taste. I somehow managed to see the bittersweet ending coming. I'd hoped I was wrong, but... I'm not sure if I'll read--or listen to--the last book (Amazon now says there will be three).

Since I got the audio book as part of "Kindle Unlimited" I mostly listened to the story. The performance was ok. At times, the narrator seemed to drop the character voices, or sound at least slightly different. This recording had a bit of static in the background than the Romulus Buckle editions, I'm not sure what Brilliance Audio had done differently with the production (if anything).

I loved both books in this series, and I read them each in a sitting. To me, this entire series has been about family-what makes a family and what keeps one together. The Source taps into this theme and explores self acceptance and strength. Horn beautifully navigates a modern paranormal romance against the backdrop of life in the Modern South. Makes me want to move to Savannah!

just finished, was stressed reading it but in love with every character, the author captures these people, and their magic.

Loved this one just as much as The Line(book 1) Story continued well from THe LIne and I really enjoyed this book as much as the 1st in the series. The only disappointment was that Book 3 will not be available until November which I sadly found out when I went to purchase it. I will be waiting until then.
