Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Paranormal private eye Charley Davidson must make a deal with the son of Satan in order to save her sister's life in this thrilling new addition to the supernatural series from Jones. Narrator Lorelei King's inspired interpretation of Jones's characters allows listeners to truly lose themselves in this otherworldly tale. King's delivery is well paced and simple, and her characterizations lend the book an air of believability and immediacy. King's Charley is tough, sexy, and brave without ever being overtly so. The supporting characters allow Charley to grow and expand, and listeners will get a full spectrum of emotion from their heroine. Inspired, realistic, and entertaining, King's performance ability is the perfect medium for Jones's witty and cunning prose. A St. Martin's hardcover. (July) --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gutsy, wise-cracking PI Charlotte “Charley” Davidson has a highly unusual clientele that includes the dead as well as the living. Right now, in addition to her usual spectral guests, Charley’s apartment is filled with the ghosts of 20 blonde women, all of whom were brutally murdered by a serial killer. In fact, their deaths were so horrific they can’t speak to her—they just relive their murders over and over. Charley has other problems. There’s the undead nurse who appears as a ghost, the naked spirit who has claimed the passenger seat in her Jeep, and the growing suspicion that Charley’s perfect crime-solving record involves more than good investigative skills. As for her love life, with incredibly handsome Reyes, the son of Satan, for a soulmate, you know that things are going to get hot. From its unique premise to its wonderfully imaginative characters, Jones’ award-winning Charley Davidson mystery series, from First Grave on the Right (2011) onward to this fifth delectable installment, will continue to attract and delight a broad spectrum of readers. --Shelley Mosley --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I absolutely love this series and have had them on pre-order since I read the very first installment. It is fun, witty, very sexy, and completely packed with mysteries and action that never drag the story down. Quite the opposite, if anything, our protagonist has attention deficit and you feel it coming from the pages since she's tackling so many different things at the same time, meanwhile distracting herself with her own inner ramblings. For some, this is distracting, but I find it campy and engaging. If you haven't read any of the previous installments, this is not the first place to start. The fifth book brings a very satisfying turning point to a rather stalled relationship that I find to be one of the most compelling and unique couplings in paranormal romance and the fantastic supporting characters are all back without recaps of who they are and what they do.

The story begins with Charley back in the swing of things working on your typical infidelity investigation, but her workload gets much larger when traumatized ghosts, ranging in ages from 7 to 35, all women with blond hair, start turning up in her apartment. Charley also finds herself completely stumped when she tracks down a body from one of her ghostly visitors only to find she's not a ghost. With backlogged cases, family matters and most importantly, relationship issues, Charley finally makes a decision about what she wants from her long list of boyfriend potentials.

This installment is simply non-stop. Like the other installments, multiple mysteries unfold in the beginning, but this one piles on even more mysteries, red herrings, violence, possible alliances and potential antagonists for future stories.

I love Charley Davidson. In this fifth installment of the series, she continues to discover her powers as grim reaper as she deals with threats to herself and to those she loves. There is plenty of Charley's quirky humor to make me laugh out loud, and her helper/assistant/sidekick Cookie is always good for attitude and humor as Charley enrolls Cookie in a gun safety class to protect the public from Cookie's gun-wielding penchant.

Reyes is as gorgeous, dark, mysterious and compelling as ever, and as Charley learns more about him, she decides to stop resisting his allure. How convenient that he has moved into the adjoining apartment!

Murdered women are congregating in Charley's apartment. Charley is hunting the bad guys, as usual, while the police captain seems to be hunting Charley; he wants to know how she has managed to solve so many murder cases and is determined to discover her secret.

So we have plots within plots: murder mysteries, family conflicts, love, and sex, all presented through Charley's rather bizarre sense of humor. I looked forward to the release of this installment, and I was not disappointed!

Holy Moley! What another fantastic book in this series. If you were thinking that you could jump right in without reading the other books in this series, even though Ms. Jones does a fantastic job adding back-story to each book, it would really be better for you to start right with the first book. You will be hooked on this series from book one and this book will make much more sense to you. This book is a fine mix of Mystery, Speculative fiction, Comedy and action with just the tiniest slightest soupcon of Chick Lit thrown in just to keep things shakin'.

First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, Book 1)
Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson)
Third Grave Dead Ahead
Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson)

This story is told with the usual humor and irreverence that Charley is known for. However, Charley seems to have grown a bit now, she is funny but seems just a tad more mature than in past books. Do not fret though, there are still plenty of scenes that will have the people around you looking at you as if you were nuts as you laugh hysterically through parts of this.

There is so much going on that it would be very difficult for me to re-cap without giving away too many spoilers, I will say that we end on a bit of a shocker, a sort of cliff-hanger, but not (if you know what I mean!

For those new to the series, Charley Davidson is The Grim Reaper. Yes, that's "the" with a capital T. Only instead of her approaching people as they die, those that have already died and are finally ready to move on approach her shining light as she's the portal to the next realm. She works as a PI that consults for the local police department, specifically for her uncle whose close rates have the precinct captain following her to see how she does it. Her secret is the fact that she sees and communicates with ghosts and gets information from them. Oh, and she has a relationship with the very sexy son of Satan, Reyes.

The ghosts of 27 blonde women start showing up in Charley's apartment, only they're all so traumatized that they don't even acknowledge her presence; all except for a girl under her bed who is about seven. But even she isn't talking. So part of the book deals with discovering what happened to them. An arsonist is also burning down the buildings where Reyes had lived and she's not sure how to ask him if he's doing it as she'd have to have him arrested if he's guilty.

There are changes with this latest story. First, Charley had been suffering PTSD in the last book and she's much better now. But her lack of sleeping in the last book had her slap happy and the humor was much more laugh out loud--like it was in prior books--than in this tale. There's still humor and Charley is still as sarcastic as ever, but the humor feels more subdued, almost like Charley has matured. Another big change is her relationship with Reyes who has a bigger role which also provides humor and the intimacy has moved to a new level. We also learn about a number of really old prophecies regarding Charley and the real reason Reyes was sent to her.
