I've read The Others series by this author and enjoyed it, even though it was not one of my eagerly awaited series. I did not figuratively bite my nails in anticipation of new books coming out. This series may be different. I really liked the idea of gargoyles awakening to find mates and save the world. The heroine was feisty, but not annoyingly so. Moreover, although she has no idea of the world she is thrust into, she has strength in her and is smart. The hero was strong and stubborn but not to the point where you wanted to strangle him. He is reluctant to deal with his feelings, but does not take forever to get his act together. That was good because there was enough going on so that the excessive melodrama was not needed. The action was good, the bad guys were creepy, and the plot was interesting. The world is well on its way to being well developed yet there is still much to discover. I will definitely be eagerly awaiting book 2. Let's see how gargoyle number 2 handles his girl. There is a lot of potential in this series. Very we'll done Ms. Warren.

Museum employee Ella has always struggled to lock down the wild force inside of her and has kept people at a distance for their own safety. But after a creepy encounter in a garden with a museum's benefactor, Ella will finally understand just what makes her 'different' when she accidentally wakes a stone Gargoyle and discovers that dark forces are at work in the world and her curse may be the world's salvation.

Heart of Stone, Warren's new Gargoyles series starter really had first book-itis. There were some good action scenes later on in the story but with the need to build the world there wasn't enough time sandwiched around the smexy stuff (two extended scenes) to really develop the relationship between Ella and Gargoyle Guardian Kees - and both the world and relationship development were mainly 'tell' not show. And since the the first smexy time between the pair occurs early in the story on there wasn't even some awesome tension building in the sensual part of the story to balance things out.

For me, I can forgive a lot if I love the hero but as much as I love gargoyles, I didn't click with Kees - he was 'stoney' emotionally ( pun intended:) and pretty jerky or condescending to Ella with no vulnerability chunks in his armor to endear me to him.

So overall, Heart of Stone was just okay - or maybe okay plus since the next up leading lady Phil looked promising from her two conversations with Ella. I will still give the next book a try and chalk this up to too high expectations (since I was a real fan of Warren's Others and I was really looking forward to her finally getting a chance to start something new after being stuck rewriting the 'Fixed' series for years) and hope that the series catches its rhythm.

Admittedly I didn't get very far in this, but I want to say what kept me from reading further.

Let me just get this off my chest: Ella. I hate you. You suck.

*points up* That, right there, will be the theme behind all of my thoughts.

It started off great. I actually kind of liked Ella. She made me laugh in the beginning, and I was getting ready to settle in and wait for the gargoyle to show up - yes, I've got a thing for gargoyles lately. But the gargoyle isn't who showed up first.

First, we're treated to a lovely scene where some guy assaults, grabs and holds onto our dear heroine - who bemoans the fact that no one is there to save her. Never mind this super-powerful gift she's got. She can't use that. Don't ask questions, she just can't! A hand bruising her arm, and one wrapped around her throat while the bad guy monologues, and kisses her and I'm glowering at my Kindle wondering when the hell she's going to knee him in the balls!

Finally, finally, she boxes his ear - well thank goodness for that. Next up, run! Get away, call the police, file a report. Does our wonderful heroine do any of that? Heck no. She stands there and looks at the jerkhole that just was choking her and starts to think nicer thoughts about him. Feels a bit sorry for him being hurt. Are you ****** kidding me??

THEN, we have the useless friend/boss that comes out - clearly she knows what was going on - and just decides to brush it all under the rug. Ignore it, and escort douchey-Mcjerkhole out the door. Mind you, she's not escorting him out the door because he should be getting arrested, no the gallery's closed so he shouldn't be there anymore.

Clearly this guy's going to show up again to try and rape the dauntless heroine again at some point.

I just finished this fantastic book and have to say that everything that is old is brand new again! What would happen if you were in a museum and one of the Gargoyle statues came to life to save you? That is the premise for a brand new series by Christine Warren.

Ella Harrow is a manager of the gift shop in a museum, she also helps with being a guide and with some fund raising. When one of the handsome but creepy donors tries to take advantage of Ella the gorgeous gargoyle that Ella loves staring at comes to life. Ella can't believe she isn't losing her mind, she starts screaming and freaking out. But Ella has always been pragmatic about certain things in life, and finally comes to grips with the new world she is involved in. It seems that she has always had magic, but she didn't realize that it wasn't an evil power. Now that sexy, but scary Kees has come to life he is her new drill Sargent. He demands that she not only learn to control her magic, she must learn to defend herself.

Kees is a Guardian who has just been woken up by a little human who isn't his Warden. She has no idea there is a Guild, or that she is a Mage. Now instead of trying to find the evil that forced him awake, he must try and teach Ella how to harness her power and become stronger. Every way he turns he finds more questions than answers, the world as he knows it has drastically changed. An evil is rising and killing all the Wardens, Kees must find a way to awaken his brother Guardians. He never dreamed he would be attracted to his little human, or that he would start to have feelings and emotions.

As we go through the new world of Guardians and Wardens, we are privileged to have a fantastic new world. A world where everything we learned about Gargoyles is new and sexy.
