More About the Author

Brenda Novak Bio

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak's career as a bestselling author--she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.

"When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book," Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times, USA Today and Borders/Waldenbooks bestseller lists and won many awards, including three Rita nominations, the Book Buyer's Best, the Book Seller's Best and the National Reader's Choice Award.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children--three girls and two boys. When she's not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually working on her annual fund-raiser for diabetes research--an online auction held on her Web site (www.brendanovak.com) every May. Brenda has raised over $1.6 million to date.

Ms. Novak knows how to write characters that are real and draw us in to the story.

What a great story that is not only a Historical Romance but is a Mystery and a Suspense Novel all together.

I would highly recommend this book even for people who are not fans of historical romances.

Abby is the daughter of an anatomist and helps run the college where he teaches. In an effort to keep the medical school open she barters with grave robbers to get specimens for the courses. For the time period, she is very modern and a bit of a feminist. At twenty-one, she is approaching old maid status and doesn’t care. With no prospects of a husband, her only desire is to become a surgeon like her father.

Despite his meager surrounding, it is obvious there is something different about Max. Even with dirt on him from digging up graves, he still has a beauty and refinement not found in the other men of his gang. He displays his intelligence in negotiating the sale of the bodies. As time passes it becomes apparent, the ressurrectionist is a front. He is really trying to find his half-sister who went missing with Big Jack, the gang’s leader. Will he find her in time or is she already dead?

Historical romances are not on my menu all the time but I do enjoy them every once in a while. I find myself surprised by how interesting this is. It took a few chapters for me to adjust to the time period. I think there is just a different frame of mind when reading period pieces. I want to get all huffy when Abby isn’t instantly admitted to medical school despite her vast knowledge and clear passion. So once I’ve set that mood aside, I can really dig into the story.

This story is very much focused on suspense with a side of romantic tension. The connection between Max and Abby continuously evolved. First there was hate and anger, followed by lust, and then a strange friendship with the possibility of more. I completely enjoyed how Max is undeniably an alpha male much by his stature and background; but it is Abby that I love.

First let me say that I was given the opportunity to preview this book and give an honest review of it. I am such a fan of Brenda Novak and try to read most of what she has written. I found her a few years back and have followed her since. I wasn't disappointed in this one. I loved the book. But, let me also say that when I started reading it, I thought "what have I gotten myself into". Gravediggers, thievery, robbers, darkness of England, basements, murder, mayhem, & romance, oh my.... and that's just the beginning. The more I read, the more I got involved with the story of a young lady named Abigail who got herself into a heap of trouble. How in the world would she get herself out of the mess she was in? The story opens where she had taken money from the schools budget to make a purchase. That went awry. Then she was held hostage by a band of grave robbers. And wouldn’t you know it, he seemed to have a special interest in her, if you know what I mean. And to top it off a keepsake that had been given to her by her mother who'd passed away when Abby was a child, had been stolen. So, the question is what happens to Abby? Will she get out of this mess? Will she finally get into school? Will she find love? Will her keepsake be found? All questions any young lady would ask, right? There are many twists and turns, so you need to read this book and find out these answers yourself. Brenda has a way of weaving her stories so that you really don’t know how it’s going to turn out until the end. A page turner for sure. If you like Brenda Novak, you will like this book. If you’ve never read her, now would be your opportunity. Just sayin'. You will be glad you did.

Body snatchers, resurrections and missing persons illuminated against the backdrop of the dark side of London, is the setting for this historical, 'black noir', romantic thriller.
It's 1830, and only eighteen months since Burke and Hare, resurrectionists who took the short cut, murdered people and sold their victims for dissection, are still front and centre in Londoner's consciousness, particularly those who are burying their loved ones.
Schools of medicine are looking for bodies to dissect. Surgeons-in-training need more than animals to work on to increase their knowledge and abilities.
When Abigail Hale, a surgeon's daughter, desperately attempts to procure bodies for her father's college, the Aldersgate School of Medicine, she runs into obstacles that most of us would flee from in terror. Instead Abigail walks headlong into a dangerous situation with nary a hesitation.
Abigail finds herself at odds with a resurrectionist's gang led by a brute of a man, Jack Hutsill and a mysterious member of the gang, Maximillian Wilder. Max is not all he seems. He is looking for his half sister Madeline who's vanished into the underbelly of the city. She was last seen in the company of Jack.
When Abigail and Max meet, Max is forced to protect her as best he can. The sparks fly between them.
The thing is Abby is headstrong, naive and a constant danger to those trying to protect her.
An intelligent young woman starved for affection, she just doesn't truly know how to be anything but forthright. I did sympathize with her. Her bald comments about all manner of things including her readings on copulation reveal her unusual upbringing.
I applauded Abby's pluck and creativity from time to time, and railed at her stubbornness at others.
