I have decided to embrace my inner steampunk and a friend told me about this series. It's all there - mystery, murder, romance and sex that doesn't make one gag. Lots of imagination here and a knowledge of human inconsistencies and motivations. I'm only sorry that I was so obsessed with them that I read them way too fast. Definitely worth multiple re-reads.

I splurged for the 4-book set, thinking I'd like it and it would be a good deal if so (it's hard to keep up with all the reading I do, and books get really expensive!)

This author is very clever at creating amusing situations, describing derring-do, and presenting us with a detailed world in the steampunk style. I want to emphasize the strength of her world description because I'm going to spend a fair bit of time criticizing a different aspect of her writing that is weak.
It is through comparison to another adventure series in the steampunk sub-genre (Buroker's The Emperor's Edge series) that I have been able to pin-point that which has been bothering me about this series. In essence, I think her characters lack depth. Too much effort is spent painting a picture of the steampunk world (she really does a great job of that) and not enough making the characters and their relationships 3-D/believable. The characters are not themselves, they are merely a "type": the intelligent-and-plucky heroine, the gruff and dangerous hero, the hopeless eccentric friend, the debonair gentleman's second. in contrast, Lindsay Buroker's characters are more real to me and I think that's why I'm finding Carriger's stories less satisfying. I have no trouble imagining what Buroker's characters do, what they're thinking about, or how they're feeling when they are "off stage". Characters of Carriger's Parisol Protectorate are not so confidently imagined.
I have just spent a paragraph pinpointing the problem with the series which is quite unfair. It IS a good series: entertaining, fun, clever. I do not regret buying the set. Lots of fun books have stereotypical characters. I'm just a little sad that I don't love the books and the characters more, cos I think so much of the writer's creation is cleverly and finely wrought (er, did I say that already?).Read more ›

These books are wonderfully written, and very entertaining. The mix of steam punk, supernatural, and romance makes this series well worth reading. Not to mention addictive. I had to order the set because my library only had the first two, and the suspense was killing me. This is definitely one of my favorite series.

I've really enjoyed this series. It has fairly good writing combined with a well thought out and exciting setting. The combination of Victorian steampunk with some fairly unique fantasy science (the whole "how supernaturals exist") make this a compelling addition to any fantasy or steampunk reader's library.

I couldn't stop reading until I finished the whole series. Very clever, lots to laugh about and unique take on Vampires and werewolves. The main character is someone I would love to have as a friend. Not just for YA. I am 60 years old. My youngest daughter recommened this series to me. I can't wait for Gail to complete her new series. I will definately buy it.

All I had going into this series was one person's recommendation, but after reading the books' description I decided to take a gamble and buy this boxed set. It could've been a big waste of money if it'd turned out that I didn't like the books, but I was quickly sucked in. This series takes place in Regency England but in this world supernatural beings (vampires, werewolves, and ghosts) have come out-of-the-closet a long time ago. This was series was the first I've ever read that could be called "steampunk" because there are some technological advances that didn't actually exist in real-world Regency England. Alexia is an unlikely heroine. She's logical, cool under pressure, sarcastic, and she's always trying to a "proper" lady. She's taller and darker and more curvy than is popular. All of these things made me love her as a character. She gets married to a werewolf in the first book, and the way they interact is constantly amusing through the whole series. There are a several other characters, including her hat-loving best friend Ivy and flamboyantly homosexual vampire friend Lord Akeladama, who are all very entertaining. This series was an excellent mix of adventure, comedy, and even a little romance. I'm sad that it's over with!
