Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Wiggs delights with this Christmas-themed installment in her Lakeshore Chronicles contemporary series (after Return to Willow Lake). Darcy Fitzgerald is still reeling from her divorce from Huntley Collins, a situation complicated by the fact that Darcy's sister is married to Huntley's brother. When Darcy meets single dad Logan O'Donnell, she is unwilling to get involved with a man who already has a child, but soon she and Logan realize they can't easily ignore their mutual attraction. With the romantic backdrop of falling snow and Christmas lights, Logan's upstate New York ski lodge is the perfect setting for their sizzling attraction to renew. Darcy's fierce independence as a sports marketing executive and expert snowboarder gives her special appeal, as her successful professional exterior hides her vulnerability. The evolution of Darcy and Logan's relationship makes enduring love believable. (Nov.)

I usually like Susan Wiggs' books. The story of Candlelight Christmas was only mediocre. The two protagonists, Darcy and Logan, are both wounded by love. She has been betrayed and he just grew apart from a youthful indiscretion. Both have been guarding their hearts in their ways. Of course, they fall for each other with a happy ending. That is usual in romances; it is the "in between" that disappointed me. Both have ideal families, both are very good people, the settings are fantastic, even the "issues" are minor and easily resolved. It is all just too perfect to be believed. I am a big fan of Christmas stories, but not this one. There wasn't any drama in the story.

Once in a while I will finish a book, close the cover and know without a doubt that it deserves 5 stars. Candlelight Christmas is one of these.
For readers familiar with Susan Wiggs Lakeshore Chronicles series you'll recognize many of the characters we know so well and for those of you who maybe aren't familiar with this author and this series but are looking for an honest, heartwarming Christmas tale told by a talented author, you've come to the right place. I love Christmas stories and have read 9 so far this season and I have to say this is one of my favorites.

Wiggs deals with some difficult issues realistically and sensitively, especially in her portrayal of the children Charlie and Andre. Charlie's father Logan O'Donnell is a divorced, single dad who cherishes every holiday and summer that he has with his son and every time he has to return him to his mother it's like a little piece is ripped out of his heart. Logan's life feels empty when he isn't with Charlie and he's ready to fall in love again and have a family but so far he hasn't met a woman who makes his heart stir... until he meets Darcy.

Darcy Fitzgerald married the wrong man and she's got the broken heart to prove it and one of the hardest parts of her divorce was giving up the stepchildren she had come to love like her own. So when Darcy accepts an invitation for Thanksgiving from her best friend and she meets her brother Logan... Darcy senses she may be in trouble. Logan is handsome, charming and fun... but he also has a ten year old son and she is determined not to risk her heart on loving another child. When they all come together again for the holiday at the beautiful ski resort Logan owns, Darcy enjoys one of the best Christmases she has ever had.

This book is fundamentally a romance story, but it also involves family interactions that are often strained and a very happy Christmas get together where not even a snowstorm induced power failure can spoil the mood. What makes this story work is how smoothly the scenes are transitioned and how well the various contexts are established in a minimum of prose.
Logan is a man that impregnated his girlfriend while they were in high school and although the two of them tried to make a go of marriage, they both realized that it was an unrealistic expectation. Their offspring is a ten-year-old boy named Charlie and the story opens with Logan enjoying an extended visit by Charlie and having to face it ending. His ex-wife has Charlie most of the time and it tears Logan up when Charlie must leave his place in New York and go back to Oklahoma. His ex-wife has married an Air Force officer and Logan learns that he has been transferred to Japan, so Charlie will be even farther away. Logan has dated women since his divorce, but he wants to have more children and none of them satisfied his motherhood criteria.
Darcy is a woman that grew up in a family that was heavily involved with another family and it was considered proper for her to marry into the other one. Unfortunately, her marriage fell apart but the relationship between the families did not, so Darcy is often placed in situations during the holidays when she must attend combined celebrations. She endures, but vows that she will harden her heart and would never consider getting married and being a mother.
The two of them meet and there are some initial smoldering sparks, Darcy is an extremely independent career woman and Logan decides to give up a successful insurance business in order to own and manage a resort in the mountains.

I have been a fan of the Lakeshore Chronicles for years and this seasonal offering continues to please. While knowing the history of some of the characters adds to the richness of the storyline, I feel the novella stands on its own merits as a good read.

The two main characters, Logan O'Donnell and Darcy Fitzgerald meet at his son's camp at summer's end. While there are definitely some sparks of interest, they go their separate ways believing they aren't each other's type and that neither has time to develop a new relationship. At an O'Donnell Thanksgiving family gathering, with Darcy a welcome guest of one of Logan's sisters, the relationship heats up a bit more until they both recognize they have fallen in love by Christmas.

The storyline is nuanced with the dynamics of large families and the effects of divorce on parents, children and the extended families. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and feel the characters are both believable and engaging personalities. I appreciated that the author did not rush the romance angle and used a clever device in the epilogue to describe the events of Logan and Darcy lives leading up to the second Christmas gathering.

I recommend the book for its creative style and its realistic and heartwarming tale of overcoming past broken relationships to risk loving again.
