I liked the book. Overall, it was a snappy and charming story. The best book JAK has put out in a while and her Dark Legacy series is definitely looking up. However, I'll be completely upfront- there are some flaws and some readers may be disappointed. For me, though, I thought the positives far outweighed the negatives. My impression of this book is that it had a really pleasant sense of JAK charm and nostalgia. It isn't one of her very best books (which actually isn't an insult because she has written some really awesome books) but it was enjoyable and worth the money I paid.
Sidenote: One of my recent criticisms of JAK's books has been the repeated recycling of material and plot points that I thought was done without much of thought and that recycling overwhelmed a basically weak or re-hashed story. I'll warn like minded readers- there is a lot of recycling in this book. HOWEVER, I think this book shows how recycling of material can be done well. If you want a completely original and innovative book- don't read JAK. She sticks to familiar territories and writes a lot of books in the same universe so a lot of elements do get shared. But, if you read and like JAK, this isn't necessarily a problem. For me, I want a good story that at least tries to be original and well-crafted. Here, JAK has taken several familiar plot points and elements but has finessed them- they are not the whole of this story. They are mostly minor points and they do not overwhelm the central story of this book. A story that I liked and enjoyed.Read more ›

This isn't a comment on content as much as it is about the price. JAK's books are enjoyable but don't warrant the hefty price tag being asked. Yes, I enjoyed the book, but wow was I glad I'd gotten out of my local library instead of paying the price for my Kindle. While I'm not against paying a fair amt of money for my Kindle books, JAKs don't warrant their price tag. I think she'll lose buyers over this. Not lose readers (they'll hit the library or if they buy will buy at a the used book store). Just a heads up.

It's official. My days as a JAK fan have come to an end. Her writing has become so formulaic that it's beginning to sound as though it's written BY a computer, not just ON a computer.
I finished the book, but it took me weeks to read it. Nothing compelled me turn the page - dialogue was flat, the situation was so complicated that I couldn't recall from one page to the next what was going on and who the bad guys were or might be, and by the time I got near ending #2, I didn't even remember who the Bad Guy for THAT ending was in the story. I mean, c'mon... there are 'red herrings', and then there are dead herrings which just stink when you finally discover them at the bottom of the trash bin.
And, as at least one other reviewer mentioned, the ending just dragged ON and ON and ON and ON... By the time I read the last actual page, I could barely recall what the point of the book was.
SO BORING! (Good sleep aid, though!)

Having always been a big fan of Ms. Krentz in all her various pen names, I found this latest offering very disappointing. Where was the witty dialogue between the hero and heroine? The worst dialogue came from the villain, who felt the need to explain the entire plot sequence to the heroine before he killed her-- simultaneously admitting his surprise at how much she already knew. "You know about those files, huh? . . . Wow. Didn't see that coming." When the author reached this point, she ended everything with one really trite conversation and several abbreviated follow-up chapters as a denouement. Ms. Krentz seems to be consistently raising the price on her novels while lowering the quality of her writing. I'm not sure I will purchase any of her future books.

I was really loving JAK's Arcane series until recently. I hated her last few books so much that I was prepared to stop reading her. This book is definitely an improvement.
Plot - The plot is a bit confusing when you try to summarize it. 2 years prior to the book Gwen Frazier participated in a paranormal study run by her friend. 2 people were murdered and the killer ended up committing suicide after trying to kill Gwen. They shut the study down. Then 2 years later after receiving a cryptic email from her friend, Gwen comes back to Wilby to find her murdered. The police are ruling it as a natural death, so Gwen decides to have someone investigate. Judson Coppersmith comes to town to help her find the killer and his/her connection to the past killings. Gwen and Judson have met and he felt sparks, but didn't act on the attraction when she offered him psychic therapy. But now that they are back together he wants her to see him as a lover an not a potential client.
I think this book is fine. It's not great, but not terrible. My biggest complaint is that we miss a lot of the action and are instead told about it. A LOT. The first 100 pages is almost completely exposition. Judson and Gwen have looooooooong conversations. And the romance part is awkwardly handled in the beginning. (There are some eye rolling phrases.) I liked Judson and Gwen, even though they are very sedate characters. Sometimes Gwen's reactions seemed odd to me. She is really annoyed that Judson doesn't want her therapy and takes it as a personal insult. Ummm, therapy is a really personal thing and can be uncomfortable for people, especially talking to someone you know and want to have a relationship with, it doesn't have anything to do with your abilities. It made me uncomfortable that she wouldn't back off.Read more ›
