Jay Paterno is the son of Joe Paterno and was on Penn State’s coaching staff for 17 seasons, 12 of which he served as the quarterback coach. He is a writer whose work has appeared in numerous publications, including the Centre Daily Times, the Penn Stater, and USA Today. His columns for StateCollege.com have been cited by Sports Illustrated and ESPN. He lives in State College, Pennsylvania. Phil Knight is the cofounder and chairman of Nike, Inc. and one of America’s most well-known entrepreneurs in the sporting world. Nike is the official athletic supplier of Penn State football’s jerseys and shoes. He lives in Beaverton, Oregon.
This is a compelling book. With respect to the defenses raised to the attacks on Coach Paterno's involvement and knowledge, there is really nothing new here. (One has to assume the lawyers had combed it to make sure of that). But the perspective of what was going on inside the family as the events were unfolding is fascinating. The final hospital scenes are extremely intimate, and Jay brings you right to the bed side and into the family conversations during the final days and the hectic planning of the public memorial that rankled the PSU brass.
At times the book lapses into being more about Jay than Joe. And while many stories seemingly have nothing to do with anything, others provide moments of absolute hilarity that do describe some of Coach Paterno's not-to-strong suits (the maxi pad band-aid story had me laughing uncontrollably out loud).
There are plenty of slaps at those who betrayed PSU and Coach Paterno and they are painfully pointed. One of the funniest lines is directed at Cynthia Baldwin, and some of the most painful at Paul Suhey. But anyone following the story or with even the most basic understanding of who was involved knew it was coming.
State College kids will enjoy the "growing up in State College in the '70s and '80s" stories and the perspective of being a "townie"/student.
The most surprising aspect of the book is Jay's use of the worst-of-the worst hateful emails, the use of profanity (in context), and his revelation about an improper overture during childhood that allowed him to understand the perspective of the Sandusky victims. Coach Paterno's books never included any such unpleasant things, or he would refer to them in a rather benign way.Read more ›

For those who have told me, "I just do not know if I can read it yet, ...too upsetting..." -although it was so compelling I could NOT put it down until 4:40 this morning (read straight from noon when it arrived)- Jay Paterno 's Book /Paterno Legacy is about so much more than the end of Joe's life. It is a true celebration of his life and his lessons. It is a look at decades of Penn State history and the man who shaped it far more than any other. The beginning of the WHITE OUT, the foundations of not just our Football Teams in Success with Honor, but other teams and their coaches as they were impacted by Joe and the success of the football program, the extraordinary legacy one person can make when they live their life to MAKE AN IMPACT. This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time, and I am a voracious reader. Yes, parts are heart-breaking, but the book, over all, is very uplifting and it gives me hope that TRUTH will rise and Success with Honor is NOT gone forever. - Sue Wilson in Ohio

Looking forward to receiving the book ( great gift). So far the parts I have read have been interesting and informative.
I finished reading yesterday. It was very interesting. It is well written and a good life story. I am surprised that I even learned more about Joe and the strength of his character. This book is not sugar coated at all. Jays frustrations are clear but I share them and understand them. When joe vomited blood, they had to sneak him out of the house under a blanket due to the crazy media for a chest X-ray... .that was very sad. The family strength was incredible, dealing with the media, firing and diagnosis in same week. Jay coaching amidst that firestorm. The last intimate details of Joes life are very detailed. I LOVE Jay telling it like it is regarding Baldwin, Suhey etc. joes comment as to not knowing who us running the show really told all. PSU admin messed up. They left team and coaches hanging. I recommend this book. It's not a Sandusky book or a " put Joe on a pedestal " book. This is a rather gut wrenching book of a son who didn't always walk the walk his dad wanted, coming to grips with that, and eventually they reach an understanding and work together for 17 yrs.

This was honestly much better than I thought it would be. I figured it would be a book solely focused on attempting to prove Joe's innocence in the recent scandal/legal issues, but it wasn't that. Sure that is mentioned...but it's an interesting read with some important life lessons.

Just finished reading, and once I started, had trouble putting it down. Never before had I realized the depth of the miscarriage of justice that occurred surrounding the Sandusky case. The Sandusky case was about crimes committed by one man. It was not about a football program, or a university, and certainly not about Joe Paterno. I have become quite convinced that Mr. Paterno was scapegoated. I hope the truth about why this happened will be uncovered at some point. Never-the-less, this book is not so much an effort to right the wrongs, but it is more a portrayal of the deep love and respect for good and principled man. Jay's deep love and admiration for his father shines through every page. For the football/sports fanatics, lots of great stories here as well. Highly recommend.
