This is the third Tallgrass novel by Marilyn Pappano that I have read, and probably my favorite of all. This series of books centers around a group of women in Tallgrass, Oklahoma who all have one thing in common. They are members of what is known as The Margarita girls, all women who have lost their husbands in the war. This book concentrates on Jessy, and a young cowboy Dalton that we met in the first book. Dalton lost his wife in the war. These are very beautiful, emotional and I would imagine down to earth stories in the lives of the wives and families who have lost a loved one in Afghanistan. I highly recommend this series and only wish my review could express how much I enjoyed this look inside the lives of what a military widow must go through and still come out and live a full and happy life.

This is my absolute favorite of the Tallgrass series, so far. The depth of emotion between Jessy and Dalton will touch your heart in a way no other book has before this one. They were off to a rocky start and he really ticked me off in an earlier book but he has redeemed himself. He's a hot cowboy so, what's not to love? You feel Jessy's struggle with her self-worth and loss of her soldier husband and pray for her strength to not drink, one day at a time. You sense Dalton's unresolved, guilt-ridden grief and want him to get past his wife's suicide in Afghanistan. The way they both overcome their respective tragedies is Pure Pappano in all her emotional glory. I cannot wait for the future books in this series. The topics are so timely and Marilyn deals with all the angst in a sensitive and caring way, educating us all as we take the journey with her easy-to-love characters. Read this book and download the previous ones in the series. You will be glad you did.

Jessy and Dalton are my favorite in the Tallgrass series. Jessy has to learn to love herself and Dalton has to get over the anger stage of his grief. Together can they overcome? A truly heartwarming story. Marilyn did a wonderful job with their story. Can't wait for the next Tallgrass book.

Brought to you by OBS reviewer Jerjen

A Love To Call Her Own by Marilyn Pappano is an emotional story of love, forgiveness and second chances. It’s a story of forgiving others as well as forgiving yourself.

Jessy Lawrence is a widow who lost her husband in combat. A husband that she no longer loved in the way a wife should love her husband and had planned on divorcing him when he came home. That never happened, though, because he died instead of returning home. So now she feels tremendous guilt. She has lost her family because she did not fit the mold that her parents had of how her life should be. She has lost her job at the bank, because she could not always be nice to irritating customers. She is an alcoholic who goes out and picks up men and does not remember what happened the next day. Jessy is struggling with the woman she has become and the woman she wants to be.

Dalton Smith is struggling, too. He lost his wife in combat, and although everyone thinks his wife died a hero, only Dalton knows the truth. He cannot bear to tell her family or his family the truth, because he does not want them to know the pain of the truth. So he lives with the secret. He has also lost his twin brother. Not to death but to the fact that his twin left home in the middle of the night, with Dalton’s girlfriend. He lives with so much anger and guilt that his life is totally negative and depressing. He is a loner who really wants to change his ways and find someone to make a future with.

Jessy and Dalton had a one night stand after both had been drinking and meeting each other. Neither can forget the other, but both are ashamed of their behavior. When they meet again, both find they are attracted to each other but are afraid to pursue the attraction.

Have read all three Tallgrass novels and have enjoyed them all. Reading about these military widows has brought insight into how their lives continue after everyone goes home. Jessy became an alcoholic and promiscuous, which was her way of coping. But she does meet Dalton, who has gone through his own loss. Together they learn to get on with the everyday living. Ms. Pappano does a wonderful job including the reader into the lives of these people as they go through the job of getting back to normal. I'm hoping for a continuation of the series!
