The ladies of the Wallflower Weddings Series by Vivienne Lorret are showing a hint of what I loved about Lisa Kleypas' Wallflowers Series, a group of ladies helping each other through the journey of "Finding" a husband...or at least not embarrassing yourself around the ton when at a ball!

I haven't read the story of Penelope, from FIVE GOLDEN RINGS Anthology, but I was able to jump right into Emma's story, which involves the straight-laced girl, from a family of free-spirits and the best friend of her older brother, Oliver, Viscount Rathburn.

I so enjoyed the back and forth banter between these two, who you can tell off the bat that they are crazy about one another, and everyone else seems to sense it, but the two themselves. Oliver needs to "pretend" to be betrothed to Emma for the sake of his grand mother who is holding his inheritance, which he needs to open the Hospital for Burn Victims, since he lost his father to a fire not long ago.

Emma agrees to the farce, but her feelings for him grow stronger everyday, and with an old mistress coming into conversation and a "secret" that Emma feels she needs to share with Oliver before they are married...oh, and the fact that Oliver has truly fallen in love with Emma...yep...lets just say that these two should have a long chat to clear the air before they say "I Do"!

Vivienne Lorret writes a historical with a Contemporary Vibe. Which for me is great, as I am not a huge reader of Historical Romance, but I will be reading the rest of this series, as I need to see the rest of the Wallflowers, who I have come to consider friends, get their HEA!

Lord Rathburn is best friends with Emma Danvers' brother, Rafael. Rathburn and Rafe have been friends since attending Eton together, and after the death of Rathburn's father in a tragic fire, the Danvers' have been like a second family. They are close enough that Emma postponed her first season in London to observe a year of mourning for Rathburn's father.

Emma's parents are artsy and thumb their noses at society. But Emma tries to strictly maintain proprieties so she can be accepted (thanks to sponsorship by Rathburn's mother) and hopes to make a good match. As a result, Rathburn's stickler of a Grandmother approves of Emma. When Rathburn finds himself in need of the inheritance his Grandmother is withholding, he talks Emma into a fake engagement to satisfy his Grandmother.

As Emma and Rathburn spend more time together, they realize how much they mean to each other. The characters discover right along with the reader what good friends they are and experience how that friendship blossoms into deeper, romantic feelings. And of course they both decide they wish the engagement was real, but neither of them admits it to the other for fear of not having their feelings returned. I love how they are both worried about ruining their friendship, not just about risking a broken heart - for me, the friendship and bond feels special and makes this book a little different since that kind of bond is so rare in romance novels.

As Rathburn is trying to figure out Emma's true feelings, and make her realize they belong together, he taps into her sensuality and those scenes are steamy without being explicit. There are several explicit scenes, but the author saves those for after their marriage.

Emma Danvers is the one level-headed person in her family, including some of the servants. She has spent her life perfecting a façade for society to avoid censure. Her parents are eccentric artists and as peers her father had been in demand until his portraits became too real for the ton. She has a secret she fears will get her shunned as well.

Oliver Goswick, Viscount Rathburn is a rake and close friend of Emma’s brother. He too has a secret he has been hiding from society. He has led the ton to believe he is a ne’er-do-well, while really rebuilding the family seat after the fire that killed his father. He flirts with Emma just to get a reaction, but admires her ability to manage difficult situations gracefully.

Oliver has enlisted Emma in a mock betrothal to gain his inheritance from his strict grandmother. Money he needs to finish the restoration of the family home and to fund his secret. His grandmother approves of Emma and thinks she is perfect for Oliver. As they go through the season through the season they each start to think in “What ifs” regarding their relationship. While you know where it will lead, Ms Lorret tosses in the perfect balance of humor and interesting secondary characters to keep things interesting. Once the inevitable happened both Emma and Oliver discover they were more right for each other than they could have imagined. While some may find Oliver’s grandmother, the Dowager Duchess of Heathcoat, manipulative, she just provides the opportunities for them to get out of their own way and find happiness. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the rest of the series.

I was entranced in the first 2 pages. I was hungry to learn more about the characters. The first chapter spent too much time on the physical for my taste but chapter and we were up and running. The characters unfolded at a great pace and kept me reading so much I couldn't put it down. I found unexpected surprises. I bookmarked chapter 13 to read over and over on a melancholy day to boost my spirits. I want to know every characters full life story. I can't wait for more books.
