I appreciated the unusual resolution the author used to the main problem in this story. I haven't read an Amish fiction book where things were resolved in that particular manner (of course that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist), and I appreciated the change. She also doesn't portray the Amish as the practically perfect people that a lot of the Amish fiction seems to. We all have our problems, don't we? Although many of them were kind and gentle, they were human and things around her were not perfect. I did feel that Trey and Hannah fell in love way to quickly and easily, given the circumstances in both their lives. I don't believe they would act on such feelings alone so quickly, but other than the speed of their developing romance, if you like Amish fiction you are sure to enjoy this story of hope. I received this book from Booksneeze and Zondervan for the purpose of an honest review. My opinion is my own. Thank you Zondervan.

Book Description: "In 'A Hopeful Heart,' the first novel of the new Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series from best-selling author Amy Clipston, Hannah finds herself at a crossroads in her life. Her community offers her love and support after the untimely death of her husband, but an Englisher offers her the chance of a new life after her unexpected tragedy. Wealthy businessman Trey Peterson is surprised by his attraction to the gentle Amish woman who works as a housekeeper in the Lancaster Grand Hotel. They share a common bond of loss and are able to offer each other comfort and support as they journey through their grief. Joshua Glick wants nothing more than to offer his friendship and love to Hannah and her family. Not only is he her late husband's brother and business partner, he has always been in love with Hannah. A Hopeful Heart is filled with surprising twists as Hannah tries to balance her life in the Amish community and her growing love for an outsider." My Review: The beginning of this story had me laughing out loud! After such a humorous beginning, I was in no hurry to put down the book. I was not disappointed. Hannah was a woman that faced some unusual circumstances, and I enjoyed watching her character evolve throughout the book. She did not take her faith or her family lightly, and had some intense struggles in deciding what was right. Even though she felt like the decisions she came to were right, it did not mean everything fell into place without repercussions. I felt like these were real-life characters with some real-life problems that were not necessarily resolved without heartache. This was a book about life. I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishers through their Booksneeze Blogger Program in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I've enjoyed everything I've read by this author so I was just a tiny bit surprised that I wasn't all that enthralled with this book.
I really tried but I just couldn't find the love for this book. I honestly felt nothing but frustration with the characters.
I thought the mom was very selfish and it bothered me that she let one of her teen daughters go live with someone else so that she could do what she wanted. It bothered me to be honest.
I have sat a good long while on even writing this review so that I could sort my feelings and possibly see if my feelings changed but they haven't. The writing was great; I just didn't connect with the characters. I felt that it was a bit sexist that Hannah had to change her entire life--at the expense of her children for a man with no children who could have easily changed for her.
About the Story: Hannah Glick lost her husband a couple years back and though she continues to work alongside her brother-in-law in the family owned business--she also chooses to work at a local hotel. It is there that she meets Trey Peterson, a wealthy businessman who is looking to start a bed and breakfast in the area.
Trey and Hannah have something in common--both have lost a spouse and it is that detail in common that draws them together despite the implications that the relationship will have for Hannah and her children. See, Hannah is Amish and Trey is not!
I really have no problems at all with reading a story where the character leaves the Amish faith but this one just bothered me. There isn't a man alive on this planet that I would be willing to leave my teenage child over.Read more ›

Just as I was fascinated with Little House on the Prairie as a little girl, I'm fascinated with Amish culture today. My life gets to be a little stressful at times, so I enjoy Amish fiction as a sort of escape from the complexity of my world.
Because Amish fiction is so popular right now, there's a lot of it out there. And not all of it is good -- there are many authors who just slap an Amish label on a book to sell copies, but none of the story seems very authentic. Amy Clipston is one of the authors I do enjoy, and her book A Hopeful Heart was an interesting twist on the typical Amish fare.
Hannah, a young widow trying to raise her children works at a local hotel. There she meets a man who is not Amish, but is a Christian. She knows that there can be no future for them without one of them making drastic changes in their lifestyle. In her case, marrying a non-Amish man would be grounds for excommunication. This would mean the loss of her community, family and friends.
I don't know how often similar scenarios play out in real life, but I do find the interaction between the Amish and modern worlds intriguing. There's definitely a clash of cultures, even when the two parties share a similar faith. I found this book to be very interesting and enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend it.
