Powerful Retelling of the Story of Esther

In 1944, blonde and blue-eyed Jewess Hadassah Benjamin feels abandoned by God when she is saved from a firing squad only to be handed over to a new enemy. Pressed into service by SS-Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt at the transit camp of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, she is able to hide behind the false identity of Stella Muller. However, in order to survive and maintain her cover as Aric's secretary, she is forced to stand by as her own people are sent to Auschwitz.

Suspecting her employer is a man of hidden depths and sympathies, Stella cautiously appeals to him on behalf of those in the camp. Aric's compassion gives her hope, and she finds herself battling a growing attraction for this man she knows she should despise as an enemy.

Stella pours herself into her efforts to keep even some of the camp's prisoners safe, but she risks the revelation of her true identity with every attempt. When her bravery brings her to the point of the ultimate sacrifice, she has only her faith to lean upon. Perhaps God has placed her there for such a time as this, but how can she save her people when she is unable to save herself?

The characters were well developed, and the romantic tension was very well written.

If you only read one book this year...
Read.
This.
Book.

For Such a Time is based on the Biblical account of Esther, the queen who saved her people. Esther happens to be one of my favourites, so I was eager to read this first novel by Kate Breslin. It was awesome! For Such a Time had me glued to it's pages from beginning to end. I read well past my bedtime and the story was constantly on my mind while I was absent from it's pages. For Such a Time is the best book I've read this year and I can see it becoming a well worn favourite, as I already can't wait to read it again. Kate Breslin admits to it not being historically accurate, so if you are an avid historian that may bother you. I just like a good story, so that fact that it wasn't always accurate didn't bother me in the least. I loved the epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter and felt that they helped tie Esther and Hadassah Benjamin's stories together. I don't want to give away any of the story, but I highly recommend reading this book and I'm looking forward to reading more from Kate Breslin in the future.

For Such a Time, by Kate Breslin, will be available for purchase from your local or online book retailer April 1, 2014.

Thank you, Bethany House and Net Galley, for the free copy to read in exchange for my honest review.

I'm partial to WWII romances, and this is one of the best I've read. Combine a tortured Nazi officer and a courageous Jewish woman, and you have a tale that looks at the most poignant aspects of the human heart. A Nazi concentration camp is the darkest setting imaginable for a romance, but hope and courage abound in this story that's a retelling of the Biblical book of Esther.

The secondary characters add to the story, too. Young Joseph gives us a glimpse into Hadassah's past and the depths of her compassion. Her Uncle Morty is an example of raw courage and bold wisdom.

And then there's the hero, Aric von Schmidt. He's a little bit of everything--powerful, violent, tender, troubled, and deeply compassionate. His journey is one of the most satisfying aspects of the story.

Just in case someone from Hollywood is reading this, make a movie!!! It would be awesome.

1944 - World War II was in full swing. Hadassah Benjamin, half Jew, had ceased to exist. She was now Stella Muller, an Austrian bookkeeper. Stella was told her beauty would save her, her blonde hair and blue eyes being rare to her people. She'd spent months in Dachau, living in quarters unfit for livestock and her dignity was stripped bare. The Nazis used hunger as a weapon, making the weak fall victim to disease and death.

Colonel Aric von Schmidt, an SS Kommandant, bends the rules and removes Stella from Dachau and takes her to Theresienstadt. Stella had clerical skills and she was to become Herr Kommandant's secretary, but what were his real motives? He was the enemy, a Jew Killer, but he'd shown Stella kindness and concern. Stella totally captivated the Herr Kommandant and soon they are drawn to each other. A forbidden love evolves that is wrapped in survival and tragedy --- and the story unfolds.

Theresienstadt was to be Stella's new home and her safety depended on Herr Kommandant. Behind Theresienstadt's facade lay dirty, straw filled stalls crammed with Jews who were suffering from hunger and dysentery. There was no hope for them. Unlike Stella, they would not be rescued, but put on cattle cars, a death train, and transported to Auschwitz, a place where Jews never returned and Krematorium fires burned day and night.

This is a powerful and intense book filled with anger, grief, and humiliation. An absolute must read that will evoke many emotions - a story about the Holocaust. Simply one of the best books I've read on this horrible period of history. My rating is 5 stars.

From the book - The Moorexpress had reached the Krematorium. A loud wail echoed from inside the ovens - a child's cry of terror.

I received an advanced reading copy from LibraryThing through Bethany House to read and review. All opinions shared are solely my responsibility.

Breslin’s debut novel is a masterful tale of sacrifice during the depths of the age of despair near the end of World War II.

The characters come to terms with truth and lies, reality, choice, and monsters within and without as they struggle to survive in the moment and in the future. Rich in detail, readers who appreciate fiction of the era will be entranced. Readers who are perfunctory in fact will want to know that the author created a fictional best-case scenario out of tragedy.

Hadassah was raised by a loving uncle after being orphaned. When Hitler attempts to create his blond-haired, blue-eyed master race and exterminate everyone else, particularly Jewish people, Uncle Morty creates a false identity for Hadassah. Through an accident of paperwork, the young woman is still sent to a death camp but miraculously escapes murder at the hands of a newly-appointed German commandant whose conscience is hanging by a thread.

Together with commandant’s strange collection of a mute housekeeper and one-eared little houseboy they become a family of misfits who must rely on each other for survival in the midst of brutality.

Romance was a necessary part of the genre, and while lovely, it was less natural than the time span allowed for my taste, as well as the faith elements of Jews and Christians. Nevertheless, I loved the characters and their story told from multiple viewpoints left me breathless with anticipation on many moments. I applaud the excellent vocabulary. Those who love historical, suspenseful inspirational fiction will find much to love about For Such A Time. Kudos to the author.

Caution: there are portrayals of graphic cruelty and murder of characters of all ages.
