Review

"Showalter's signature blend of sizzling attraction, breathtaking worlds, and lethal stakes rocks me every time!"-Sylvia Day, #1 New York Times bestselling author

"Showalter does her magic with an intricately developed world, complex and intensive character arcs and dark, compelling paranormal themes. She releases that literary punch to the gut with excruciatingly detailed scenes that haunt the senses long after reading the pages."-USA Today on Wicked Nights

"The Lords of the Underworld series...keeps getting more satisfying. Sometimes with a long-running series, characters or storylines can run their course, but not with Showalter's talent. The chemistry has never been hotter and both the characters and the world they live in are beautifully detailed."-RT Book Reviews on The Darkest Craving

"One of the premier authors of paranormal romance."-#1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole

"Passion, humor, pulse-pounding action and just plain fun...Showalter's books are always a refreshing escape!"-New York Times bestselling author Lara Adrian

"One of Showalter's biggest strengths is her ability to create wounded characters who are riveting and intense, but who also hold out the hope of redemption."-RT Book Reviews on Beauty Awakened

"Bold and witty, sexy and provocative."-New York Times bestselling author Carly Phillips on Animal Instincts

"With compelling stories and memorable characters, Gena Showalter never fails to dazzle."—Jeaniene Frost, New York Times bestselling author

Customer Reviews

I love Gena Showalter and read all of her books/series.

The overall story line about the group of last chance angels and Thane's story in particular both begin with the first book and continue through to this one.
Sophia Rose
There's constant action, with immortals battling each other for both fun and revenge, plenty of humor, as well as hot romance.

Gena Showalter is back. If you have to ask where she went, you haven't been reading some of her latest books. The past few have definitely failed to measure up to her earlier offerings, especially in the sexual arena. But I believe if you liked the Lords of the Underworld books from the days of Lucien and Aeron, you will definitely enjoy Burning Dawn. It's angsty, snarky, and very sexy.

This is Thane's book. As the story begins, he doesn't even know who he is anymore. He is being held as a sex slave by the Phoenix who captured him in the last book. But a brave halfling named Elin sees more in him. She risks her neck to break his addiction and help set him free, hoping he will get her out of the camp where she, too, is a prisoner.

Her plan works. She and Thane escape, and he grants her protection as an employee in his club. He also takes all the Phoenix (Phoenixes? Phoeni?) who were at the camp with them and proceeds to torture them without mercy. So who could blame Elin for keeping her half Phoenix heritage to herself? Of course, this sets up The Big Secret that you know is going to come back and bite them just as they start to fall in love.

Thane's a pretty good tortured hero and I enjoyed watching him learn to love. I liked his emotional commitment; how he goes all-in with Elin; how loving her prompts him to want to be a better man. Elin is a pretty good heroine and she grows a lot too. I like that, despite her youth, she has not only had a sexual relationship before, but a real loving one. (Showalter loves virgin heroines, so this is a pretty novel thing.) Her sass and smack-talk are a little over the top at times: very reminiscent of Anya, or Kresley Cole's Valkyries.

My only other beef: the constant misunderstandings between Thane and Elin.

I've read a previous novel in this series and stick by what I said in that review - the author is getting a "tone". But I have loved this author's work in the past so I continue to read her new stuff. I'm sorry to say, it just keeps getting worse and worse. Her books used to have a lot of soul, for lack of a better term. You could really feel the connection the couple had, you could relate to the characters, and even if a few of the scenarios were "sticky" she generally had everything fixed (reasonably) by the end. But she has lost that, especially with this recent novel.

The dialogue is pretty bad, the first few chapters were rather confusing, and unfortunately, just like with the last one, the author is too busy world building to give the main couple the attention that they should have. The love scenes are stilted and not good. Their connection seems tenuous at best and he deliberately keeps her dependent on him but it's okay because he loves her? No. There's so many characters that I have a hard time connecting to any of them. She has a lot of material that is pretty dark, but there doesn't seem to really be a purpose to it, its just there for the sake of being dark and gritty - it doesn't come off well and she didn't resolve the issues.

Disappointing.

Wow, just wow! I LOVED it!!! Let me just say that I am a huge, HUGE Showalter fan. I have read and re-read all of the LoTU books over and over again. I spent the entire day, sneakily reading this book at my desk. I think it is safe to say that I literally got no work done. And I can’t even be sorry!

I was so so worried that this book would be a major let down because of Gena's previous books. Which, lets be honest now, weren't written in Miss Showalters usual steamy finesse! I’m sure that this was a worry that I shared with a lot of other loyal Showalter fans. And hey, I’m not saying that I needed any down and dirty to truly adore Showalters books, because she is such a talented writer, but they added to the book as a whole. But her last 2 book were somewhat disappointing. It was almost like they were written by a completely different author! But this book?! Dear sweet baby Jesus… where do I even begin?

Miss Showalter is back in the hizz-ows! Thane…. I think… I think.. he is my new leading man?! For some reason, Lucien has always held this title! I just can’t help but love that man. But good lord, Thane was just absolutely.... indescribable. I don’t think I can quite put into words how much I adore him after this book. His development throughout the novel was beautiful to watch. I loved how he was with Elin. New book BF fer-shur! And who could not love his epic bro-mance with Xerxes and Bjorn?! I love them too! They better be getting their own books or so help me! I need these men in my life. I actually didn’t think it was possible to love fictional characters quite this much.

Elin? She had so much sass! I loved her sense of humor. She had really great character growth and development too. And honestly?

I have been reading Gena's book's since the beginning and I have loved every single one. However, this one reminded how much I missed her writing from the beginning of the Lords of the underworld's books. It was fun and witty. It made me laugh and that is not mentioning how sexy and unintentionally romantic Thane was. So. Freaking. Hot. What is sexier than a Neanderthal angel sending you chocolates, and throwing any being that looks at you wrong off the cloud? Nothing. And that's before they really get it on.

But the best part of this and really all of Gena's book's? The dialog. Whether it is internal or not, it is just damn good and always worth it. I will always be a devoted fan, really, but this book cemented it.

Welcome back Gena. I'm sure you have seen and heard it a million times but this book is so damn good. Loved it! And I can't wait for Torin's book!
