A first time for me buying a comic book. I visited the SHUNGA exhibition of erotic art at the British Museum and we were surprised to see how many famous modern artists were influenced by the amusing and clever art of these Japanese artists. The exhibition also mentioned the Spanish comic artist Manara.
It was worth my getting this for the pleasure of reading the quite fascinating essay - so sparkling and interesting showing how impossible it is to draw any lines between art and pornography. I can see how much of the disdain society reserves for comics and erotica is because of their own hang ups and fears. It is amazing how people fear visual depictions of sex when the graphic images of violence are everywhere! Manara's work like much of the Shunga is also amusing and catches different aspects of human nature.
