While others enjoyed the description of Nantucket, I often thought it went on and on a little too much to my liking.

Set on the romantic island of Nantucket off the coast of Massachusetts at Christmas time featuring a 3 year old, an abandoned dog, newlyweds and a couple expecting their second child, you would expect a terrific story. hmmmm, What I got was Kennedy, married and 8 months pregnant with her 2nd child. And for some god forsaken reason she wants to inflict on her father the pain of remarriage to her mother - her cold as ice mother - who left their marriage for another man. Oh, and BTW he is already happily newly married to a lovely woman.

The novel just lost me there. Also it was about 100 pages shorter than I thought it needed to be a deep satisfying read.
Nicole, is a 50 something widow newly married to Sebastian who needs to stand up for herself
Sebastian is a 60 something retired Attorney who needs to convict his daughter for immaturity
Kennedy is his daughter who really needs to be swept out to sea
Katya is the exwife who needs to go to sea with her daughter
Snix-Pooh is the dog who needs a new name
Max is the tiny tot who needs to get dialogue suited to his age and not someone much older

On Nantucket, the Christmas season is different. And A Nantucket Christmas by Nancy Thayer is a different and charming Christmas story which is down to earth, and so thoroughly enjoyable. It is the story of building relationship, the delicate intricacies and dynamics of a broken family. It is also the story of an abandoned dog and a boy, and how they bring about a change in the family. It is moving story about love and loss and the Christmas miracle.

The story opens with Sebastian and Nicole, both finding love a second time. Nicole Somerset is taken by her husband Sebastian, a former attorney, to his house in the island for Christmas. And in time, Sebastian discovered that Nicole was the opposite of Katya, his first wife, who was a perfectionist and who kept him on a tight leash and a rigid routine. Nicole, on the other hand, introduced Sebastian to the delights his first wife disdained, walking rather than biking, homemade pie – eaten while watching television, stopping to watch birds and wildflowers or watching the sunset. Sebastian on his part takes her swimming, sailing and tennis. It was an unforgettable time for both of them, with Christmas fast approaching.

But all good things must come to an end. Bringing the curtains down on the joy and happiness of the couple was none else but Sebastian’s daughter, Kennedy. Heavily pregnant, she turned up unannounced with her family, including her husband and three-year-old son Maddox. Though Nicole was warm and courteous to her step-daughter, Kennedy was ready for a fight and avoided her as if she does not live in the house. Spoiled to the core, Kennedy was also keen on her father-mother getting back together though it has been over four years since their divorce.

Nicole is the main character and the most outsider of the group, she married into this crazy dysfunctional family and this is her first Christmas in their mix. She takes quite the emotional beating while still keeping a game face on - I was extremely proud of the abuse she took, I couldn't have done it!

Nicole mostly deals with a grown step daughter who even as an adult with parents that have been separated for awhile dreams of her family reuniting. I found her to be the most frustrating and each time she spoke, I cringed.

It's hard to believe that the woman who wrote one of my favorite book series "THe Hot Flash Club" and all the sequels with very 3 dimensional characters wrote something so lame.

The characters, are very one dimensional. We no nothing about them other than Nicole works/worked as a nurse. How did such a whiny, petulant girl like Kennedy ever find anyone to marry her? She seems to complain about how tired she is, but she never spends any time playing with her child, just smothering him. Her husband, James, is bascially "the husband", but we know nothing of him either.

Nicole seems to be the most developed which isn't saying much, because outside of knowing that she has a friend, and she works as a nurse, there is nothing to make us care about her either.

I wish Nancy Thayer would make another HFC book. She really developed those characters and situations, even in the first few pages, I seemed to know way more about them, than I did after having finished this book

"A Nantucket Christmas" is a sweet, cozy read that pulls a few punches, but mainly caught me up in the fever for Nantucket holiday fare. The story line I have read often, but then I chose to read softer, more hopeful books around the holidays.

The characters are enjoyable if not entirely believable. The plot is sweet especially with the deserted dog. My eyes misted up at his story line. So, the writing was presented well enough that I could believe that the dog was narrating for me at times.

I recommend it around the holidays and hope it brings joy to your life.
