Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

It's a beautiful summer on Sullivan's Island, and Marietta Muir has brought her three granddaughters together for a retreat for the first time in many years. Author and narrator Mary Alice Munroe delivers a charming, emotional, and funny performance that will appeal to female listeners of all ages. Munroe knows her characters like no one else could, and her portrayals of the summer girls are subtle, realistic, carefully crafted, and pitch-perfect. The result is a simply presented, honest audiobook about four women and how even strong family ties can loosen over time. A Gallery paperback. (July) --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Review

"Mary Alice Monroe has taken the rich waters of the Atlantic Coast as her own field of dreams. In The Summer Girls, she sings a song of praise to the bottle-nosed dolphins that bring so much joy to the men and women who gaze at the creeks and rivers of the low country each evening. Like all her books, The Summer Girls is a call to arms." (New York Times bestselling author Pat Conroy)

"The Summer Girls is more than just a beautifully written, moving portrayal of three sisters finding themselves and each other after years of separation. It's also an important book that deals head-on with significant issues so skillfully woven into the narrative that I often stopped to consider the import of what I'd just read. If you're a dedicated environmentalist, this book is a must-read. If you're just someone who enjoys a good story, you'll get that, too, and much more." (New York Times bestselling author Cassandra King)

"The Summer Girls conveys sound environmental messages through a captivating story of how the ocean and a charismatic dolphin reunite sisters in the alluring ecological setting of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The story resonates on a personal level and, moreover, delivers a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting dolphins and the environment in which they live." (Patricia Fair, Director, Marine Mammal Program, NOAA)

“Monroe’s resplendent storytelling shines even brighter . . . [with] startling insights into the intimate connection between nature and the human heart.” (New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan Henry)

“In the bestselling tradition of Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, Mary Alice Monroe skillfully weaves together issues of class, women’s rights, and domestic abuse set in the tumultuous South during the 1970s. . . . Beautifully wrought, and rich with keen insight . . . an unforgettable tale of marriage, resilience, and one woman’s private strength.” (Bookreporter)

“Magical! Mary Alice Monroe's writing is always sensitive and true, and as inspiring as the natural wonder about which she writes. This luminous tale—set in the South Carolina Lowcountry that we both love so deeply—was hard to put down.” (Dorothea Benton Frank)

“Monroe brings authenticity and a sense of wonder to the plight of the endangered sea turtles and their miraculous capacity for survival.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Monroe utilizes her signature combination of informative storytelling wrapped in the relatable sagas of her protagonists.” (Charleston City Paper)

“An exquisite, many-layered novel of an unsolved mystery, an obsession, a reconciliation, and a little romance.... Treats readers to lush descriptions of nature." (Booklist)

"An author of power and depth." (RT Reviews)

"A consummate storyteller." (The Best Reviews)

"A master storyteller." (Southeastern Charm magazine)

"A strong, warm voice that brings the South to life." (Powell's Book Review)

"Mary Alice Monroe has written another novel that is helping to redefine the beauty and magic of the Carolina Lowcountry. Every book she has written has felt like a homecoming to me and...she has succeeded in making the marshes and rivers of the Lowcountry her literary home.... Haunting." (New York Times bestselling author Pat Conroy)

"Monroe makes her characters so believable, the reader can almost hear them breathing." (Booklist)

"Mary Alice Monroe has become one of the premier voices contemporary women's fiction today. Her lyrical, emotional, and gripping stories make for superb reading experiences." (RT Book Reviews)

"A soaring, passionate story of loneliness and pain and the simple ability of love to heal and transcend both. Mary Alice Monroe's voice is as strong and true as the great birds of prey of whom she writes." (Anne Rivers Siddons)

"Mary Alice Monroe writes from her heart to the hearts of her readers." (Charleston Post & Courier)

"Such a wonderful, exciting new read! Very well written and addicting! Looking forward to the next book in the series. Mary Alice--hurry up!" (Books Unlimited)

"Mary Alice writes the most readable books with important environmental story lines, but "The Summer Girls"might be my favorite. It's about family, finding yourself, getting through bad issues that could weigh you down, and enjoying the ride with the warm embrace of family. And there's a wild dolphin who helps heal the pain but finds his own. This book has everything--sense of place, family, strong characters, romance,a love of dolphins and more. This is BETTER than a beach read; this is a great book club book to discuss! Can't wait for the next in the trilogy. thanks, Mary Alice!" (First Reads)

"How wonderful it is to be able to dig into a summer novel and not only get so much pleasure from the awesome story, but to learn, learn, learn...[S]he brings new awareness to those of us who need enlightening." (Maurice on Books)

"[A] beautifully written and thought provoking work of fiction. Mary Alice Monroe once again delivers on her promise to write books that explore the beauty in nature and the complexity of human relationships as she delves into the human psyche." (Linda Hitchcock of Booktrib)

"The Summer Girls" is a satisfying read -- better than a beach book which, to me, implies a certain amount of lightness and fluff. Mary Alice Monroe is at her best here, weaving a tale of family, of young women finding themselves, anchored by their grandmother and a strong sense of place. You will learn to care for each of the main characters, Mamaw's "girls," as they find their way down life's rocky paths. And, as in nearly all of her books, there is an environmental plot, this one about dolphins. So, not only do you get great story, you get an environmental message and learn new things along the way. Who could ask for more? This book is the first in a trilogy, so already Mary Alice's fans are clamoring for number two.

Mary Alice Monroe's books combine a beautiful story with accurate and interesting information about the wildlife of the South Carolina low country. The Summer Girls is the story of "Mamaw" Muir and her three very different granddaughters. It is also the first of a trilogy where you will learn about wild bottle nosed dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean. I'm sure you will not be disappointed and will want to read the second and third books in this series. It really is one of Monroe's best novels.

If you have not read any of Mary Alice Monroe's books, you are missing out on some very special reading! When I "discovered" her in 2011, I read all 11 of her books in less than 3 months. Then I eagerly awaited the release of Beach House Memories last summer and was not disappointed. While I am partial to the beach house series because of my love of loggerhead turtles and my breast cancer connection to Time Is a River, the Summer Girls may be my new favorite MAM book. I was immediately drawn into the tender, but complicated relationships between Mamaw and her 3 granddaughters, each with her own baggage. But as you meet each of the summer girls, you will come to love them for their individuality and to cheer for them to overcome their challenges, especially Carson with her own demons and her extraordinary connection with a dolphin.

Whenever I read an enjoyable book, I am anxious to see how it ends, but sad when it does end; and The Summer Girls is definitely one of those books. Imagine how ecstatic I was to read the on the very last line: "End of Book One". There is more to come and I can't wait!

Mary Alice Monroe weaves the lives of three estranged sisters into a beautiful tapestry of reconciliation. It happens over one last summer at their Grandmother's home on Sullivan's Island, S.C. Being "forced" (by conditions set in their father's will) to spend an entire summer on the island with one another one final time does not set well with any of them. Each brings her own "baggage" with her to the island and just wants to be left alone by the others, including their grandmother whose home it is where they are staying.
One of the sisters brings her autistic child with her for the summer and much of the book revolves around him, one of his aunts, and a dolphin. Together the summer girls begin to enjoy the island as broken fences begin to mend. It is truly a beautiful and touching story that I would highly recommend!

I was so disappointed in this book. Having read the author's previous books and enjoyed them, I was looking forward to a good read. I found I didn't care for any of the characters, especially Carson's love interest. Blake was rude and obnoxious. And, yes, if I read the word Mamaw one more time I would scream! I got a little excited when I saw Toy and Ethan's names, but it was short-lived. The cliches rolling off Toy's tongue were ridiculous. I thought, "Toy didn't talk like that in the last book." What is Ms. Monroe thinking? I'm assuming she is setting us up for a trilogy. I kind of wondered what was going on with Harper and Dora, but I don't really care enough to find out. Unfortunate.

I too tried this book because of the high ratings. Well, I guess I'm too used to Liane Moriarty, Mary Kay Andrews, Dorthea Benton Frank and Joshilyn Jackson because I found this book to be trite, cliched and the dialog was stunning in it's ability to make you say, "oh good Lord, she didn't really say that did she?" Stuff like the sisters "releasing their inner Huck Finn" ugh!

Simplistic, no depth of characters (or anything else for that matter) and if you find that looking at the word Mamaw over, and over, and over makes you grit your teeth you better not pick this one up or, make your dental appointment when you start it cause you won't have anything but nubs left by the time you're done. Mamaw indeed... Mamaw entered the room, Mamaw sighed, Mamaw, Mamaw, MAMAW EEEEEEKKKKKK!!!!!

I love everything I have read by Ms. Monroe. This is especially true of The Summer Girls. We went from sea turtles to dolphins, which interested me so much. I'm looking forward to my next book!
