Editorial Reviews

Review

"As gripping as it was sexy! Witty dialogue, great chemistry and a great plot make Rival a book you don't want to end." – #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Colleen Hoover

“A gritty, racy new adult tale peppered with raw emotions. This smoking-hot, action-packed story is a powerful addition to the edgy side of the genre, and readers will eagerly anticipate the next installment.” – Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Bully, the first book in Douglas’ new adult romance Fall Away series, was a self-published sensation, and Rival, the latest installment, is bound to capture even more readers with its intensely emotional writing, angst-driven plot, and abundance of steamy sex scenes.” – Booklist

Praise for Bully:

"Bully was a wonderfully addictive read that kept my heart racing from start to finish. I could not put it down! 5 stars!!"—Aesta's Book Blog

"A heated and passionate novel, full of feeling and intensity that will appeal to the reader seeking an emotional rush.”—IndieReader.com

5+ Madoc Effing Caruthers STARS!!!

First of all, I owe Penelope a huge THANK YOU for giving me an ARC of this wonderful little gem.

HOLY. SHIT. Penelope has done it again! And let me just say, Pen, I freaking LOVE your mind. Rival was fantastic! Seriously could not put this book down. It's a definite cover-to-cover read.

I absolutely adored Bully and Until You but I think Rival wins it for me (at least until Falling Away.) ;) I love Jared and Tate but I feel like Madoc and Fallon were so much more HOT together. Dare I say it, I think I may even love Madoc more than Jared. Who would have thought?! I never go for the blondes! Get ready to swoon ladies. That boy is just so sexy, It's impossible not to fall for him.

Madoc and Fallon threw me around like a damn rag doll and I'm pretty sure I got whiplash. I could not keep up with their feelings for each other. The back and forth banter between them was freaking hilarious. You'd think they were fighting but then they'd just want to rip each others clothes off. They wanted each other but yet they wanted to hate each other. I loved it!

The sex scenes, oh the sex scenes. Pen writes sex scenes, and Pen writes sex scenes well. Reeeeally well. I want to fan myself just thinking about them. Holy crap, they were hot! Where can I find my own Madoc?!

And now... I am DYING for Jax. January is way too far away.

Well, I wanted to love this one so much and I wish I could give this 5 stars.Suffice it to say, this book was a bit uneven for me. There were parts that I liked but there were parts that I wasn't really crazy about. I won't enumerate all of them because they are massive spoilers so I'll just focus on the major things that I didn't like.

Madoc and Fallon are step siblings and two years ago something happened between them but unfortunately, it ended very badly. But now Fallon is back and Madoc doesn't quite know what to do with the whole situation. There were a lot of misunderstandings, feelings of betrayal and the desire to seek revenge.

What worked for me.

The writing. Penelope Douglas can write. No question about it. She takes this really compelling and sometimes difficult characters and make you fall in love with them. That's what she did with Madoc. You all remembered Madoc, right? I cheered Tate on when she finally junk punched the guy. He was the classic arrogant douchecanoe but at the end of Bully, I wanted his story so bad. We finally got a glimpse of it during Until You. And I was excited to read his story because of forbidden quality to it.

The sex scenes were pretty darn hot. If you think Bully and Until You were hot, this book surpassed both of them in the steam department. And I got to tell you, for readers who are looking for some serious steam in their book, read this book.

I liked Madoc and Fallon. I liked them together, for the most part. They're opposites in so many ways yet they have enough in common to make their relationship believable. When they're not at each other's throats, I enjoyed their interaction very much.

What didn't work...

The overall plot.

Originally given 4.5 hearts at Rookie Romance.

Oh, I loved it. Love, love, loved it! I'm definitely a fan of Penelope Douglas' books and these characters.

I loved Fallon. She's feisty and seems completely fearless. She's so strong, but some of that strength came at a rather terrible price. She definitely has walls erected that she tries to use to keep Madoc out of her heart, but she has a particular weakness for Madoc that means that those walls crumble helplessly around him.
Madoc was also pretty darn amazing. I liked him in Bully and Until You, but I loved him in Rival. We get to see the real Madoc and not just the fun loving guy he presents to the world. He has such a wonderful, mischievous sense of humour which I think suits Fallon to a T and softens her a bit. I loved seeing this other side to him and seeing that he is surprisingly sensitive and haunted by Fallon's sudden disappearance when they were 16.

I adored Madoc and Fallon's love-hate relationship. It's often contentious and filled with tension- mostly sexual tension! At the beginning, upon Fallon's return, there are misunderstandings aplenty and both Madoc and Fallon have different sides of their story. I loved seeing their past slowly revealed from both sides until we get a full understanding of just what happened between them when they were 16. It broke my heart sometimes, and there's plenty of angst to go around in their story.

It was so brilliant to revisit with previous characters in the series as well. Tate and Jared are still as argumentative and passionate as ever. I loved seeing Jax as well, he's certainly grown up a lot. I am very excited to read his book, especially with K.C. as his leading lady!

Rival is filled with characters that are flawed, real, and completely lovable. This is a fantastic read that is sure to stay with you long after you've put the book down, and I’m happy to say that Penelope Douglas has most certainly grown as an Author. This is by far her best book yet!

Madoc and Fallon may have been step siblings, but they shared a love/hate relationship that crossed the lines on more than one occasion. When she’s unexpectedly shipped off to boarding school, she’s both bitter and resentful. Now, two years later, she’s back and is looking for revenge.

I absolutely adored Fallon. I mean, I have a serious girl crush on her. She’s feisty, full of spunk, and is able to hold her own against Madoc who is the king of quips. She had been through things that would completely shatter most people, but instead, she came out that much stronger. I loved her will. Her fight. Her drive. Hell … I loved everything about her.

Madoc stole my heart in Bully with his loyalty to Jared and the way he spoke without a filter. I never knew what to expect with him and it kept me on my toes. In this story we get to see what made Madoc the way that he is. Why he took on that playboy persona. He harbored a lot of hurt and dealt with it the only way that he knew how. He definitely has a way with words and there’s a part in this story where his words to Fallon actually rival Tate’s speech in Bully. It was that GOOD. That heartfelt. That sweet. I seriously swooned over it and Madoc officially has my heart now. I’m so sorry Jared, but I hope you understand.

Speaking of Jared, I did thoroughly enjoy getting to see more of his and Tate’s relationship throughout the novel. Their friendship and the love that they share is so genuine that I don’t think I’ll ever grow tired of it.
