* I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

An emotionally reluctant, brooding Duke and a lively, scandal prone lady who have a history together? What more could I ask for? I love me some passionate angst and characters who push one another's boundaries. Naturally, What a Duke Dares sent my romantic little heart into a fluttering frenzy!

When they were young, Penelope Thorne rejected Camden Rothermere’s marriage proposal because he didn’t love her and she fled to Italy. Nine years later and Cam has made a deathbed promise to Penelope’s eldest brother to bring her back to England. Avoiding scandal as they travel back to England isn’t easy and the two find themselves married before they reach their destination. Tied together for life, the pair tries to make the best out of their marriage. Cam wants to have a passionate but loveless marriage and Penelope wonders if perhaps she's fighting a losing battle for Cam's love.

Is it possible to be any more in love with a story than I am with What a Duke Dares? I doubt it! Ugh what a dilemma, I don’t know which book in the Sons of Sin series is my favorite! I thought it was A Rake’s Midnight Kiss but now What a Duke Dares has given it some stiff competition!

I’ve loved all three stories to be honest, the fragile ties that bonded Jonas, Richard and Camden made for an interesting set of books. Each book was separate enough to stand alone but connected enough to make you want to read them in order.

Throughout the series Cam was an enigma and I’m not ashamed to admit that that’s what made him so interesting. He was this solid, quiet almost stone like character who didn’t speak unless he had something important to say.

What an unexpected and entirely wonderful surprise! If you follow Under the Covers on Facebook you will have noticed that I have been splashing quotes around for this book for the last couple of weeks, I wanted to share some of my favourite bits of this What a Duke Dares and get everyone else excited about it as well!

Essentially it takes one arrogant duke who doggedly suppresses his feelings due to a difficult childhood and awful parent and throws him at his old childhood friend and the woman who dared turn down his proposal of marriage nine years earlier. The woman in question just happens to be outspoken, eccentric and slightly scandalous, everything he doesn’t want in his future duchess. Add a shipwreck, a besotted younger brother and a few London balls full of vicious gossips, then you have What a Duke Dares.

The romance between Cam (the repressed duke) and Penelope (his tormentor) was contentious, full of tension, mainly of the sexual kind and unsaid feelings. This made the book both exciting and threaded through with heat right from the start, but also a frustrating. I very much wanted them both to get over their fears and just be happy together, instead they bickered and have fantastic sex.

This also contained something else that I love; a secondary romance. This took place between Pen’s younger brother and Cam’s enemy’s beloved younger sister. Already you can see disaster brewing. I loved the contrast though between both the romances, Harry and Sophie’s was sweet and straightforward, the only thing holding the back were their impossible circumstances; a penniless younger son from a notorious family doesn’t marry a rich sister of a duke.

So far, I have enjoyed every installment in Anna Campbell’s Sons of Sin series. Each one has maintained a unique personality, but what I really like about Campbell’s writing is her ability to make me feel her characters’ emotions… even when (like in this case) they do their very best to ignore their own feelings.

Penelope has been in love with her brother’s best friend Camden since she was a child. He was always there for her. He was attractive and was even going to be a Duke. What woman wouldn’t be crazy about him? The problem is that she knew he would never be crazy about her.

His parents had a messy, emotional, and scandalous marriage. The only thing Cam ever wanted was to rise above that — to live a life beyond reproach in a passionless marriage with an acceptable duchess. He knew he liked Pen just fine growing up, so he figured proposing to a friend would be a fantastic solution. He never dreamed she would turn him down, but that’s exactly what she did.

Of course, Pen never told Cam that the real reason she rejected his proposal was because she loved him… because he would never love her. Instead, she spent years traveling the world. It’s not until Cam seeks her out to bring her home after her brother’s death that they cross paths again. That’s when the real fire ignites between them. The story follows the course of their relationship as Pen tries to hold on to her heart in the face of a man who rejects the idea of love on principle.

Poor Pen gave me all the feels. She loves Cam so much, even despite herself. And he is so clueless. I liked her spirit. I liked how well she knew herself and how she tried to hold out for the things she knew she needed. Of course, I had just as much fun watching her resolve crumble every time Cam would touch her.
