About the Author
After playing hooky one day in the seventh grade to read Gone With the Wind, Karen White knew she wanted to be a writer—or become Scarlett O'Hara. In spite of these aspirations, Karen pursued a degree in business and graduated cum laude with a BS in Management from Tulane University. Ten years later, after leaving the business world, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a writer and wrote her first book. In the Shadow of the Moon was published in August, 2000. This book was nominated for the prestigious RITA award in 2001 in two separate categories. Her books have since been nominated for numerous national contests including another RITA, the Georgia Author of the Year Award and in 2008 won the National Readers’ Choice Award for Learning to Breathe.
Karen currently writes what she refers to as ‘grit lit’—southern women’s fiction—and has recently expanded her horizons into writing a mystery series set in Charleston. Her tenth novel, The Lost Hours, will be released in trade paperback by New American Library, a division of Penguin Publishing Group, in April 2009.
Karen hails from a long line of Southerners but spent most of her growing up years in London, England and is a graduate of the American School in London. She currently lives near Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and two teenaged children, and a spoiled Havanese dog (who appears in several of her books), Quincy. When not writing, she spends her time reading, singing, playing piano, chauffeuring children and avoiding cooking.

I grew up being a voracious reader and it was a natural step to turn my interest to writing. I have published 18 award-winning and bestselling novels including my January 2014 release, RETURN TO TRADD STREET, which debuted on the New York Times bestseller list at number 6.
I write what others have termed "grit-lit"--southern women's fiction, as well as a contemporary paranormal mystery series set in Charleston, South Carolina. All of my books are set in the US South, and feature a female protagonist at a crossroads in her life.
I live near Atlanta, Georgia with my husband, two children, and the cutest Havanese dog, Quincy, whom readers may recognize as General Lee in the Tradd Street series.
My upcoming book, A LONG TIME GONE, will be released by New American Library, a division of Penguin Publishing, on June 3, 2014. It's set in the Mississippi Delta where my mother was born and raised and where I spent many happy childhood summers.

It's 5:15 a.m. and the phone and doorbell are ringing in Melanie's home. While she's used to seeing and hearing voices of dead spirits at all times of the day, she doesn't like the messages she's hearing about listening to her heart. So far she's been guarding her heart quite fiercely, thank you very much. So how surprised is she when Jack, her ex-boyfriend and whom she secretly yearns, is at the door, asking her to house his daughter who has trekked her way to his door after her mother died. Jack never even knew until now that he has a daughter, a surly, angry gal at that!
Several plot elements are happening here which basically involve voices and things violently moving by unknown hands, voices haunting Melanie with incessant messages involving Jack's daughter, Nola, and the mystery behind a Gothic dollhouse temporarily being held at Melanie's mother's house.
Nola's tough exterior doesn't frighten Melanie as they share the experience of abandonment and both search for healing. Their lack of trust frequently complicates the story, a hesitation and cynicism that is quite understandable and can truly only be understood by those who have known the same. As Nola slowly and not without clashes adapts to her father's presence and insistence on his love, she becomes the connection with some very sad and other very angry spirits. She and Melanie's Mom, as well as best friend Sophie and Jack, prompt Melanie to investigate further. Replete with mysterious, dark, and many terror-filled pages, this novel has enough multiple threads to keep the reader riveted and furiously flipping the pages to read faster.

As Karen's #1 Fan, I have read every one of her books. I love all of them but The Strangers on Montagu Street is my favorite book of hers to date. It is an absolute page turner and leaves you begging for more. Unfortunately, due to her publisher's scheduling of her books they are going to make us wait a while for #4, but believe me it will be well worth the wait. I tell Karen all the time that she
needs to be cloned so we could have more of her books. I am always waiting for a new Karen White book because when I get one to read I devour it very quickly. She can't write fast enough to suit me. We had a major cliffhanger in #2 but the cliffhanger in #3 is much easier to imagine what might happen in the next book in the series. If you want a really good book to read that is hard to put down get The Strangers On Montagu Street. You will love it!

Finished reading Karen White's book, THE STRANGERS ON MONTAGU STREET, last night: It's a light and fun read that you can roll down through in a matter of hours.
The story is set in a great Southern City with quirky characters, historical homes, and even a few ghosts. White also introduces a new character in this third book of THE TRADD STREET SERIES---NOLA is a thirteen year old girl, and she brings a lot of flavor to this book.
Course, it's good to learn something from any book, and I did learn something pretty important in this book; that is, don't underestimate the value of what a red dress can do for a girl.

if the main character, Melanie, doesn't lighten up and her and Jack don't get married in the next installment and experience some HAPPINESS, I'm done with this series. Happily ever afters do exist, after all, in real life and has been a winning formula in literature for a very long time. Intrigue, mystery and happiness can co-exist without it being boring!!!!!

This is the 3rd book in Karen White's series about Melanie Middleton, a Charleston Realtor who specializes in historic homes and coincidentally "sees dead people." I was just as happy with this book as I was with the two prior ones and almost couldn't put it down. These books have gotten progressively a little darker, but they still have a nice balance of romance, life study, and paranormal activity. It is probably better to read the first two books before this one, although the events of the prior books are explained to some extent. I wasn't exactly expecting the "to be continued" ending; I'm glad to know there will be another one, however. I am really fond of Karen White's books; I've read and recommend all of them.

I don't usually write reviews, but I felt I needed to in this case. I loved the first Tradd Street book and loved Melanie and Jack. In this book I am befuddled by Karen White's take on their relationship. Do real people actually talk and act the way Jack and Melanie do in this book? Why couldn't she just tell him about Marc? I don't see why Jack would be mad at Melanie for not telling him, she had nothing to do with the problem. Anyway, I am totally confused about their relationship. In other books I have read it seems to me the hero and heroine who got along well together figured out they were right for each other way before the third book and it didn't hurt any future books.

I read this book without having read the previous two in the series so it's possible to enjoy it since the story is self-contained. However, "Strangers" does make reference to events from the previous books so I wish I had read them to have context; perhaps Melanie's and Jack's relationship would have made more sense.
I found it annoying how the author constantly felt the need to remind the reader of how handsome and charming Jack is. The author doesn't show us that by any of his actions, he just simply is because the she explicitly says so ad nauseum. I also found it annoying how Melanie, in her inner monologue, was constantly fawning over Jack and reminding the reader of how much she desired him. Melanie would also go overboard to emphasize how many other females in Charleston wanted him--even elderly women.
The book is predictable and there was a plot twist I saw coming several chapters before the reveal. If you're interested in stories about the paranormal, it's not a bad book, though I would check it out from the library or have them order it if they don't carry it.
