Series: Ultimate Kauai Guidebook
Paperback: 272 pages
Publisher: Wizard Publications Inc.; All New 9th Edition edition (May 15, 2014)
Most travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.
This book is a huge home run for the first time visitor as well as the returning Kauai visitor. It's really, really good. The book is well laid out in a logical fashion which makes finding the information fast and easy. The book separates the island into North, South, East and West Shores, with multiple quick fold out map references guides inside the front and back covers. This feature alone is huge. It includes aerial photos of the top beaches, which helps for hiking, snorkeling and other outdoor planning. The combination of the writing style, which is easy to read on the fly and relaxed but professional, with the number of color photos and detail maps provides a perfect comprehensive guide for anyone visiting or even living on Kauai.
What we found especially helpful were spot on details on local shopping and dining, which helped us make decisions about how to manage our vacation budget--a key element for many people visiting Hawaii. Whether you're visiting with a 'money's no object' situation or pinching pennies, the tips in the book were helpful. Additionally, sections on everything from culture and language to personal responsibility were helpful. Bottom line; this book delivers so much for it's price that it's a must for anyone visiting Kauai.

I purchased this book because the Maui Revealed book has never steered us wrong on our trips to Maui. This book is a different story. The "Ono" restaurant recommendations are terrible. Not sure what happened with this book because the "Ono" restaurants on Maui have never been wrong. Stay away from The Beach House on the south shore unless you like overpriced, average tourist traps. The sunset was amazing and that was it. We paid a lot of $$$$$ for that sunset. Go for the sunset and eat somewhere else like Plantation Gardens, which by the way, this book took away their "Ono" and was possibly one of the best restaurants we have ever eaten at on any of the islands. All I am saying is that for restaurant recommendations, use caution.

A great book, very useful. Just spent a week on Kauai with my 14 year old son and used this book for everything. Good maps, directions and good beach reviews. We snorkeled every day, hiked the Na pali coast and had a blast . Good restaurant reviews. Could not have done this trip without it.

An indispensable resource for every Kauai vacation. I was turned onto this book before my first visit in 2001 and have bought every edition since for subsequent annual visits. It doesn't change much from edition to edition but there's always something new or fine-tuned to make it worth the new version. In the 8th edition I learned of a hidden waterfall near to where I stay. In this edition there is (finally) mileage noted clearly at the beginning of each hike description. Plus I love the tradition of buying the new version as a prelude to an upcoming trip. :)
Restaurant reviews can be hit or miss (they tend to be forgiving of flaws if the place has a view) but most of the restaurants of interest are listed, so it's a good starting point when trying to figure out where to eat.
On the down side, they could do better with ocean safety descriptions. The ocean safety section is pretty good, but it took several editions before they got around to mentioning how many people drown at Queen's Bath. And I cannot for the life of me understand why they don't tell people about the daily ocean reports available at http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/ocean_report/.

We recently visited Kauai after going there almost 20 years ago. I couldn't find my original copy of this book, so I purchased the new edition. Just like the first time, everything was spot on and this book was the absolute best travelling companion. I have to put in a special word for the "Learn to Surf" surf school...instructor Cliff Dixon was amazing!! My 14 year old daughter was up instantly and surfing like she'd been doing it for years. Worth every penny...and a deal compared to other companies around the island. All in all the best travel book I have ever used. :)

We absolutely love this book and all the Revealed books. It is so full of information and we have agreed with just about every review on the places we've tried over the years, even the ones we looked up after the fact and did not like. The writing is very clear with a good sense of humor. You really do feel like your getting the scoop from a local friend you can trust. We still buy the new edition each time it comes out just so we are up to date on changes in reviews and for the places that are new or have closed since the last edition.
