Great series of guidebooks...Their fun-to-read style is helpful and easy to follow. Their observations are precise... --Hawaii Magazine
An authoritative and in-depth look at all that the island offers. --Josh Roberts, USA Today
Book Description
Most travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.
Andrew Doughty has been exploring and writing about the Hawaiian Islands for many years and is the best-selling guidebook writer in the United States, with millions of books in print. Andrew reviews every business anonymously and has hiked and GPSed every trail, secluded beach and special place described in his books. When he's not on the ground, you'll find him in the air in his airplane designed specifically for aerial photography.
I'm a big guide book guy, so when I saw all the five star reviews for Maui Revealed, I thought I'd struck gold. After two weeks on vacation there, I have to say...Really?
Let's start with the good. Andrew Doughty clearly knows - and better yet, loves - Maui, and there's no shortage of information. Whether it's a waterfall, a beach, or a trail, chances are Doughty's covered it, and if he hasn't, it's probably not worth visiting.
So why such a low review?
Doughty injects a MASSIVE amount of his own personality in the book and especially the reviews, whether telling (fairly lame) jokes, relating anecdotes, or giving his opinions, and to me, a major portion of it read like it was written by a single TripAdvisor user - and this is not a good thing.
In other words, think about the reviews from TripAdvisor. They're usually hyper-specific ("Boy was the waiter rude that one night!"), are written in a sing-song, casual, anecdotal way, and ultimately have no value in a single instance. Seriously, when was the last time you went to TripAdvisor and trusted just one review? The value in TripAdvisor is that you can read many, many different reviews over a wide range of users (newlyweds, college kids, seniors, etc) and draw out a picture of what applies to you.
This is why I like good guide books - you get one well-written authoritative, all-encompassing opinion (even when a guide book is written by several authors). With Maui Revealed, I swear it's like getting one lone TripAdvisor user's reviews. For example, Doughty is a big advocate of powered hang gliders, because he does it as a hobby and really, really loves it. Awesome activity, everyone should try it.Read more ›

Aloha! Good book. Worth buying for a Maui trip. Useful information including ratings. This book along with Lonely Planet Discover Maui covered all our bases. Admittedly we took the Lonely Planet book everywhere and ultimately preferred it. We have practically worn out the Lonely Plant Maui book. Not dissing Maui Revealed - glad I bought it. It is dense with information but the design and typography could use a modern touch. Think this doesn't matter? It really does in terms of easily digesting the information. Buy this book and Lonely Planet. Mahalo!

Just two anecdotes for you. First, while stopped at one of the mile markers off of Hana, in our attempt to discover a waterfall most "people simply drive over," we came across a couple sitting in their car trying to figure out where the heck this place was. Aha! They too were reading "Maui Revealed." Turns out someone has caught up to the author's divulging of Maui's best kept secrets and has made the area almost (hah, someone cut the wire fence up) inaccessible. You know, we jokingly said to the couple "see you have our same taste in literature, I guess we'll see you around." Oh, we did. However, they must have been too tired to travel to see the Red Sand Beach (a true gem that we would have NEVER found if it weren't for this little book here). We caught up with them again at the seven sacred pools and bid them farewell.
Second anecdote goes like this: We were swimming at one of Maui's west beaches which despite all its popularity was virtually empty like the author had stated. An older gentleman, somewhat of a local celebrity, approached us and asked if we were staying with family around the area. I am blessed with the face of youth at nearly 30...he asked as if I was a stray puppy that had ventured too far away. I said "no, we're just traveling around on our own." He then asked "how ever did you find this place? Only the people that live here know about this place." I think he was a tad bit annoyed actually. Lucky for you, I said it was serendipity.
This book is a real gem. You will discover things MOST people 1) overlook while traveling through Maui or 2) Maui residents just DON'T want you to know about. All that being said, it is for the adventurer. Not those of you who want to make complaints about legalities and what's dangerous and what isn't.Read more ›

More of a hikers guide that a general travel book on the island. Very detailed on the areas history, trails and scenery. Not much general information on towns, communities or activities. Good guidebook if you plan to spend time off the beaten path.

I don't see what all the hype is about this book. I've traveled across Europe, Asia and Central America, so I've read a travel book or two in my day, but I would definitely not recommend this one.
There is some good information in this book, including lots of little facts that aren't offered in other books. That being said, the format of this book is just awful though. I couldn't find anything in it and had a horrible time navigating through it. Although this book is rated as 'the best' Maui travel guide, I felt it was just too much personal opinion and really missed out on some good stuff.
I ended up returning this and went with the Eyewitness Travel Top 10 Maui, Molokai & Lanai. I was definitely not disappointed in the switch.
