Book Description
Most travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.
The book is a wonderfully written guide to exploring the ins and outs of the Big Island. I used it in 2007, 2008 and most recently the new edition in 2014. I gave it four stars instead of five simply because I have seen the impact that revealing the local secrets has had on some of the ecosystems. For example, while there were destructive 4-wheel drive paths all over landscape from South Point to the olivine sand beach in 2007, there were very few people on those paths and at the beach. In 2014 the place was packed. Few people were walking to the beach (it's not THAT far or rigorous for that matter) and many were paying locals to take them to and from the olivine beach. What was once a tranquil place, a reward for walking to it, was more like a mini-resort. The walk was no longer lovely because you were watching out for smelly vehicles. Shouldn't some things be explored on foot? There are enough attractions to which one can drive. Perhaps some places should be left for locals to enjoy.

My husband and I traveled to the Big Island at the end of January 2014. It was our second trip to the island so even though we were familiar with it, this book was a huge help in finding what to do, where to dine, and directions on how to get there. A must have if you are traveling to the Big Island!

The book is about as good as guide books get. Personally I used the Kindle version of the book on my iPad and then downloaded the app to my phone for $7-8, which we used constantly on the road. I would say you could easily get away with JUST THE APP, but the book has far more info. I would also say, spring for the app whether you buy the book or not because it has GPS maps whether you have an internet connection or not and we constantly needed to look at exactly where we were when trying to find remote beaches and such. Seriously, buy the freaking app.

I just got back from two weeks on the big island and was able to explore every wonderful nook and cranny with the help of this book. It is so chock full of information about cool, hidden places, restaurants, swimming holes, etc. But for the love of Pete - can they organize it by area, not by activity. I can't tell you how many times I flipped through that book trying to find something I had previously read and couldn't remember whether it was in Sights, Beaches, Activities or Adventures - it's maddening!

It was our second trip to Big Island, and the first one without the kids, which gave us much more mobility and opportunity to explore. This book is for explorers. The information is very well organized and presented, and it’s fun to read even if you don’t ever go to Hawaii. I give it 4 stars out of 5 because the book is not complete without the smart phone downloadable guide (sold separately). They should be sold together.

This book was recommended to me by a former Hawaii resident and it did not disappoint. Every sight, restaurant, and activity recommended by them was terrific. My only problem with this book is its organization. Everything is divided by types rather than geographical areas. So if you want to know where to go, where to stay, and where to eat in Kohala, you have to look in three different places in the book. Likewise, the maps are scattered throughout and sometimes you need a combination of them. That said, if you get one book to help you discover the Big Island, this is it. We also met many people using it and they all found it valuable.

This book would be best, I think, when you're planning your trip. It reads much better than the usual guidebook. The information is thorough and gives you a feel for the place. However, when we were there, we found the online version almost useless. For instance, sitting at breakfast and trying to find somewhere to snorkel. The same writing that makes enjoyable reading is hard to sift through to find quick specifics. A physical book would have probably been easier to flip back and forth. Though if you're good at marking your electronic pages, maybe this wouldn't be an issue.
