Wizard continues to produce information, maps and photographs that are all first-rate, and even better! --Honolulu Star Advertiser

Book Description

Most travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.

Without telling our Oahu dwelling friend what the recommendations were in this book, he ended up picking hikes and places to eat for us that were listed in this book as things to do. So, I'd regard this book as the real deal - these are the cool things you should do and see while you are on Oahu. We even taught our friend (who has lived there for 15 years) a thing or two based on what was written in the book. The only thing I didn't care for in this book was the writing style - it reminded me of one of those goofy tour guides who tries to inject comedy as much as possible. I'm all for a good laugh, but when I'm reading a guide book, I really just want to know the facts. I'd definitely buy this book for someone who was looking to vacation on Oahu if they don't already have a local contact.

You cannot see the photos or maps needed on the kindle version of the book.
The tips are much better on other islands.

This is one of the few travel books I have read from cover to cover, owing to its brief but lively historical narratives as well as its straightforward discussion of places to visit, or to avoid. Mr. Doughty's style is both interesting and entertaining. After visiting some of the places he discusses (such as the Polynesian Cultural Center), I didn't always agree with his comments, but one of the pleasures of this book is that he admits he has biases, and does his best to reveal them so that you can make your own judgments. Our recent trip to Honolulu and the North Shore was richer and more enjoyable than we expected, owing at least partly to this book.

Most guidebooks are written in a leaden style: they provide information without giving you much of sense of the place. Doughty's book is different. He really knows Oahu, and provides an insider view that includes some of the nasty bits about local politics, as well as a candid "take" on the less - than - entrancing aspects of Honolulu. Yet, overall, his book is positive in tone and replete with useful information on the many beautiful places to visit. In short, it provides a candid overview that will steer the visitor towards what is really worth seeing and away from the tourist traps that abound on the island. A most unusual and definitely indispensable guide that will help you know the place before you even arrive there. The fact that Doughty also has a lively sense of humor only makes his book that much more attractive. Locals regard Oahu Revealed as the best guide to their island paradise, as will visitors who follow its recommendations.

Just got back from Oahu, the info in the book was right on the money. I wish I had read it much earlier though, several things I wanted to see - like Pearl Harbor and ShagriLa - have advance reservations. By the time I read the book it was too late to get reservations to either. I would recommend this book as the only one you would need to enjoy Oahu.

I have all 0f Andrew Doughty's books on Hawaii and, although I have been to the islands many times, Andrew always has new places and things to suggest and explore.
I enjoy his writing style, informative but not "stuffy", with a sense of humor. It makes exploring his books as much fun as exploring the islands. My husband and I have found we enjoy his taste in foods and places to eat and generally stay away from those places he does not recommend.

I had high hopes for this book but I thought it was going to be more like Rick Steve's books which had sample itineraries. Also, the restaurant recommendations were ok. They recommended Cheesecake Factory and Mcdonalds which I thought was different because they were chains so we didn't use the book for that.

It did have good information on hotels and excursions so that was really helpful. If they could add some sample itineraries that would make the book better.

Filled with great info, maps, photos and cultural/historical background. Has a sense of humor with off the wall trivia. Love it! Highly recommend this guide. The Moon Handbook was not bad, but this one blew it out of the water.
