In this guide, you’ll find an inviting mix of exciting cities and cozy towns. Explore the lively cities of Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla, and follow the Route of the White Hill Towns in Andalucía’s sun-drenched countryside. Experience the works of the great masters—from El Greco to Picasso to Dalí—and learn how to avoid the lines at the most popular museums. Self-guided walks lead you through the castles, cathedrals, and villages of this ancient but modern land. End your day with a glass of Rioja wine and a plate of tapas—then join the locals for an evening of flamenco.

Rick’s candid, humorous advice will guide you to good-value hotels and restaurants. He’ll help you plan where to go and what to see, depending on the length of your trip. You’ll get up-to-date recommendations about what is worth your time and money. More than just reviews and directions, a Rick Steves guidebook is a tour guide in your pocket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Travel Accessory December 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I would rate Rick Steves Travel Books 5 stars for the paperback versions and 4 stars for the Kindle versions. The maps in the Kindle versions are not "zoomable" and that is a significant shortcoming, especially for us more senior travelers. If you have watched Rick's TV shows or used his books for any trip you probably already know if you agree with his travel philosophy or not. I have used the books to plan trips to Turkey, Greece, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Ireland, Scotland and Britain and I've never been disappointed. Especially valuable are the sections on connections. I make most of my trips using public transportation and with a combination of the book sections and Rick Steves website I can put together a travel plan that works well. You'll know when to substitute buses for trains, which stations to stop or change trains, all the essentials. I have also found his hotel recommendations to be excellent. Tips provided on how to save money and time for museums and attractions are invaluable. I wouldn't plan a trip without buying one of his travel guides.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointeed in the Spain/Portugal books. July 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
There was no information on the cities on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea such as Valencia, Malaga, Cazdiz, etc. We were on a Cruise ship and had no way of ascertaining what we should see in these port cities. Also I do not think Rick mentioned that American Express is accepted in only a few places (hotel, restaurants, shops, tec.) in Spain while stating that Portuguese merchants preferred cash to credit cards and we found it to be the opposite - Portugal readily accepted even American Express.

2.0 out of 5 stars boring and hard to use April 12, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When I plan a major trip, I usually buy several guidebooks to get different perspectives. Rick Steves' books seem to be very hot right now, because of his TV show, so I bought this guide. I was very disappointed. For the most part, the book is a sea of text.

The major travel guides have been doing this for decades, and they mostly get it right. Fodors, Frommers, Lonely Planet... make good use of sidebars, breakout sections, highlights, photos, etc to organize the information, and make it interesting and easy to navigate. In addition, they have more usable info, such as train routes and ticket ordering info.

Of the three travel guides to Spain I bought, this one is the least useful by far.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed. February 22, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My son is going to Valencia for study abroad. I thought I would get this for him for his trip. Although other places in Spain are covered well, there is no mention of Valencia. I just assumed the third largest city in Spain with one of the largest tourist destinations would be covered. Very disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a comprehensive guidebook. July 27, 2014
Format:Paperback
This book is a thousand pages long yet still has nothing to say about large portions of the country and significant cities, including all of Aragon and the city of Valencia. If you only want to go where Rick Steves thinks you should go, this book will serve you well. Otherwise, skip it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Planning Purposes February 22, 2014
By E. Rich
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Our trip is for May 2014 so we are still in the planning stages. I think Rick Steves does a good job of describing the different parts of Spain and giving ideas for itineraries. There is information about how to get around that we found helpful (we are going to take a night train for part of the trip--an idea from Rick that we think will work well). I was able to get excited about the trip from his descriptions. I do think that Rick caters a bit to the budget traveler though and doesn't always give enough of a balanced review for those of us who want a bit of luxury during our travels. I haven't really explored the restaurant sections, but it seems that he likes to help travelers find the hole in the wall local joint that serves great food--which we LOVE, but we also like to eat at a Michelin star restaurant one night too and Rick doesn't seem to be a foodie in that respect. Great maps including ones that detail travel times. Good tips on avoiding crowds and lines. No coverage of Valencia--which I found odd, given that the other book we bought (Fodor's 2014) did cover it. Worth buying in combination with another travel book unless you are solely a budget traveler and don't want to go to Valencia!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Spain December 28, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I first used Steves' guide for Ireland last October to help plan my trip and it was very useful. I'm planning a trip to Spain next year and the first place I went was to Rick Steves.
He knows all of the ins and outs, and all the right places to go, like a personal tour guide in your hand.

More About the Author

Rick Steves advocates smart, affordable, perspective-broadening travel. As host and writer of the popular public television series Rick Steves' Europe, and best-selling author of 40 European travel books, he encourages Americans to travel as "temporary locals." He helps American travelers connect much more intimately and authentically with Europe -- and Europeans -- for a fraction of what mainstream tourists pay.

Over the past 20 years, Rick has hosted over 100 travel shows for public television, and numerous pledge specials (raising millions of dollars for local stations). His Rick Steves' Europe TV series is carried by over 300 stations, reaching 95 percent of U.S. markets. Rick has also created two award-winning specials for public television: Rick Steves' European Christmas and the ground-breaking Rick Steves' Iran. Rick writes and co-produces his television programs through his company, Back Door Productions.

Rick Steves also hosts a weekly public radio program, Travel with Rick Steves. With a broader approach to travel everywhere, in each hour-long program Rick interviews guest travel expert, followed by listener call-ins. Travel with Rick Steves airs across the country and has spawned a popular podcast. Rick has also created a series of audio walking tour podcasts for museums and neighborhoods in Paris, Rome, Florence and Venice (with more tours, including London, coming in 2010).

Rick self-published the first edition of his travel skills book, Europe Through the Back Door (now updated annually), in 1980. He has also written more than 40 other country, city and regional guidebooks, phrase books, and "snapshot" guides. For several years, Rick Steves' Italy has been the bestselling international guidebook sold in the U.S. In 2009, Rick tackled a new genre of travel writing with Travel as a Political Act, reflecting on how a life of travel has broadened his own perspectives, and travel can be a significant force for peace and understanding in the world. Rick's books are published by Avalon Travel, a member of the Perseus Books Group.

In addition to his guidebooks, TV and radio work, Rick is a syndicated newspaper columnist with the Tribune Media Services. He appears frequently on television, radio, and online as the leading authority on European travel.

Rick took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. By the time he reached 18, Rick jokes, "I realized I didn't need my parents to travel!" He began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD), a business which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a well-traveled staff of 70 full-time employees. ETBD offers free travel information through its travel center, website (www.ricksteves.com), European Railpass Guide, and free travel newsletters. ETBD also runs a successful European tour program with more than 300 departures -- attracting around 10,000 travelers -- annually.

Rick is outspoken on the need for Americans to fit better into our planet by broadening their perspectives through travel. He is also committed to his own neighborhood. He's an active member of the Lutheran church (and has hosted the ELCA's national video productions). He's a board member of NORML (working to reform marijuana laws in the USA). And Rick has provided his local YWCA with a 24-unit apartment building with which to house homeless mothers.

Rick Steves spends about a third of every year in Europe, researching guidebooks, filming TV shows, and making new discoveries for travelers. He lives and works in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington, where his office window overlooks his old junior high school.
