About the Author

Rick Steves has spent 100 days every year since 1973 exploring Europe. Rick produces a public television series (Rick Steves' Europe), a public radio show (Travel with Rick Steves), and an app and podcast (Rick Steves Audio Europe); writes a bestselling series of guidebooks and a nationally syndicated newspaper column; organizes guided tours that take thousands of travelers to Europe annually; and offers an information-packed website (RickSteves.com). With the help of his hardworking staff of 80 at Europe Through the Back Door—in Edmonds, Washington, just north of Seattle—Rick's mission is to make European travel fun, affordable, and culturally broadening for Americans.

Irish-American Pat O'Connor first journeyed to Ireland in 1981, and was hooked by the history and passion of the feisty Irish culture. Frequent return visits led to his partnership with Rick Steves and his work as a tour guide and coauthor of this book. Pat loves all things Hibernian (except the black pudding) and thrives on the adventures that occur as he annually slogs the bogs in search of new Irish travel discoveries.

Excellent resource! I've been to Ireland and am planning another trip there. This book covers everything that I saw and did on my first trip plus a bunch of stuff that I wish I had known then. It has info on avoiding crowds and getting off the beaten path as well as lots of practical tips on where to stay, eat, even park your car. Even if you're not planning a trip in the near future this book is a good read.

I ordered this book looking for information on Limerick, since my niece will be married there in September. No mention of Limerick. No mention of Shannon with exception of the airport either.

Rick's guide was kind of an obvious choice but I preferred Susan Byron's Where to Eat Sleep & Play, better choice of accommodation and restaurants.

Rick Steves provides a ton of information on a selection of quality sites. This contrasts with other books such as Lonely Planet that try to cover every attraction, every sight, every restaurant, and every place to eat. I appreciate Mr. Steve's curated approach as it gives me much more useful information about fewer sights, rather than a minimum of information for every possible sight. Rick Steves' books are full of practical and straight-talk travel advice.

It was very helpful. Believe his short packing list I took too much We did what was recommended and Discovered other charming places not mentioned in the book. So if you want the real Ireland go to the ordinary towns like limeric and hang out. And get lost that was the best part when we found ourselves in some little town wandering around going into little shops or pubs and just experiencing the ordinary life of Ireland

This book is absolutely invaluable. With tips on everything from how to pack (and yes, you really CAN travel without checking a bag), historical information, and how to get to sites that are well off the beaten path, we would have had a much harder time finding our way around when we decided to just rent a car and drive the coast. Thank you, Rick Steves. We will never travel out of the US without you.
