This guide is OUTSTANDING for getting a general sense of what each park is all about and it's major (close to roadside) attractions.

However, if you are looking for the best hikes, backpacking trips, climbs, etc., you will NOT find it here. You also won't any truly useful hiking maps. You'll find general driving maps with many of the park's most popular features listed.

Start with this book and compliment it with specific hiking guides to specific parks (i.e. take a look at many of the Falcon hiking guides), and also get yourself some detailed and waterproof NatGeo trail maps, which are made for most of the popular national parks.

I've bought every edition of this book, and it's been invaluable for visiting over 30 of the listed parks. Our vacations are planned around the "How to visit" recommendations, and this has proven to be helpful in getting the maximum enjoyment from each park without spending time on other hiking trails or side trips. I use other travel books and park service material for planning the details of where to stay and eat, what other trails to hike if we have more time, and what else to visit in the area, but this book is the most useful of all to me.

I have had several editions of this book and recommend it over any other National Park book. It gives just enough info for a good summary and planning guide. I have visited 44 of the National Parks. This covers just the PARKS not the National Monuments, Seashores, Forests, etc... just the big, main parks. It is the perfect companion especially if you take only one book. Of course, when you get to the park you are going to stop at the visitor centers anyway for hiking maps, ranger talks, and small details. This book gives you the main info that you can't get along without. It suggests when to go, pacing and timing, phone numbers, lodging, and especially the overview and routing of the major sites in the park. The main feature we depend on is the timing suggestions in how many hours/days it takes to see the park in a visit. This info has been very accurate and since our family has used this guide for years and years, we know how it paces and how we sometimes are quicker or slower on certain features. I really like at the end of each park it gives a couple suggestions of other natural features in the same vicinity. Whether we drive or fly to see a park, only one book goes with us EVERY trip and this is it. I also help plan travel for other people and this is the main book I recommend.

I got this book, as my wife ans I have been visiting the National Parks of the USA. This is the 7th edition, and has been updated. The book covers all the parks, what to do, day planning, hiking, camping and eating. If you plan to visit the national Parks, this is a must have. Great info and wonderful pictures, I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book because we planned a trip to a number of the National Parks this fall. We have yet to go, but this book has all the ones we plan to visit. It gives you an overview of each park, how to get there, when to go and what to do and see. It breaks down the important aspects of what to see on the amount of time you have for a visit. It also provides information on fees, lodging inside and outside the park, camping and accessible services. The book is broken down into areas like the East, or the Southwest, putting the National Parks together in an area. It covers 58 scenic parks in which to explore, with lots of information, beautiful pictures and helpful maps. And exploring an unknown area is always best done with a guide, someone who has tested the trails and learned about the best places to go. So after reading this book, it will travel with us and be our guide, helping us to have the best possible experience.

the instructions were to find a department for my review but i couldn't find STUNNING in the list!!! what a marvelous book! we cannot seem to put it down. i am beginning to think i should have ordered two of them so that i might have a better chance to spend some quality time with it myself. seriously, tho', if you are thinking about visiting any of our national parks, or if your children need information about the parks for school, this is the book for you. it is candy for your eyes, food for your soul...on a par with the Ken Burns' series about our national parks,
a book to be enjoyed and enjoyed... and then, just when you start to put it down, something else catches your eye....

NG Guide to National Parks is very light on details. It includes the major parks for the whole U.S., but doesn't give enough information to plan a visit. I reviewed the information it offered for parks I have already visited and found their suggestion and instructions were not accurate. The book contains beautiful photos and is printed on high-quality paper, but I would consider it more of an armchair travelouge rather than a tool to plan visiting one of America's great National Parks.

I'll have to sign this review "Not so Happy Customer."

Just what we needed for our summer holidays. Visited a few National Park and it gives the high-level overview to get started and do some planning. Then more details can be found online on various webpages.
