'Don't leave home without STREETWISE.' --The New York Times

'STREETWISE is an absolute travel essential.' --Travel + Leisure Magazine

'In a strange city, your sense of direction is only as good as the map in your hands. The best maps to carry are published by STREETWISE.' --Chicago Daily Herald

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We've set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you've never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970's, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn't match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we've done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it's not about the map, it's about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It's about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

My son and I used this map on our recent (and first) trip to NYC and it was very helpful.

Easy to read, you can wipe it clean easily since it's laminated, folds easily, good size that will fit in a jacket pocket or purse.
Jeena
The larger Manhattan street map shows the subway routes and stops in detail, so you find subway stations on a street level!

To the user whose StreetWise map didn't show the Chrysler Building: You'll be pleased to know that the Chrysler has been added to the latest addition!

I've been using this map since it first came out, and have given away more copies than I can count. I keep a map in each of two briefcases and one in my backpack. I use it several times a month to plot subway routes or to get my bearings in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

I've lived in NYC for thirty-six years, and this is the map I couldn't do without. Great product.

This map has been a godsend to me. Not only does it list popular sites, but it manages to fit the entire island of Manhattan on it. It's great for me, since I go all over the city and definitely need the uptown bits that generally get cut off. Also, having a bus map has turned out to be indispensable more than once. The only thing I could do with is a full subway map. While it does list the stops, it's very hard to see how they all connect and thus plan a trip via subway. But overall, this has been the best pocket map I've found of Manhattan.

I picked this map up on my second day in NYC because it is small (essentially a piece of paper folded in half), lamenated, and had the subway stops/connections along with the streets. Wow, was it worth the money! I walked/took the subway over 4 days and hit every neighborhood all because of the ease of this map. "Study" it while on the train so you are prepared at your next stop. This map along with a multiday subway pass is all you need to have freedom to explore NYC with confidence and speed!

You might not believe it but I bought one of these in 1987 and I'm still using it! (and a DC one the following year, still have that). I keep it in my car and have GPS in-car plus iphone now, but I used it a lot before GPS was invented and still pull it out once in a while to see what bridge is nearer if I'm in Brooklyn as I do not have a good sense of direction and my GPS always wants to send me via the midtown tunnel or the battery tunnel and make me pay a toll. NYC has changed, obviously, but the point is, this really lasts well if you treat it nicely and has everything you need for Manhattan at a glance. I would note that the new ones I've seen in stores look like they are made with the same great quality material. Other maps I've had from other companies that are more expensive are literally falling apart with less use after a year. It's not quite as convenient as those origami maps that fold up business card size, but it's much more durable as those wear out after a few months. Streetwise rocks!

I have Streetwise maps for cities all over the world and they have gotten me easily and accurately to where I want to go in cities from New York to Atlanta, Rome to Budapest. They fold open and closed so easily, and I've had my NYC map for more than a decade and it's only slightly creased around the edges. I only have to buy a new one because the MTA changed the subway.
I love them so much I even have one for the city I live in!

I just purchased this map for friends who are visiting from Canada. I first found out about Streetwise Manhattan when I was an NYPD Field Training Officer back in the the 1980's. The Association for a Better New York, then under the direction of former NYC Mayor John Lindsey, gave us cases of maps to issue to new police officers assigned NSU-3 in Mid-town Manhattan. With Streetwise Maps our Officers were able to give specific directions to visitors and residents on where a place was and how to get there. It does not give a description of a place just the location and how to get there in an easy to read format. The map was folded and ringed to exactly fit in the NYPD issued memo book holders. The NYPD copies did include some specific information not listed on the regular copies back then. I myself used the map to give countless directions to people and other Officers when I was assigned to the area around the United Nations. I also frequently gave away my copies to visitors when they asked me. When my son and sister were appointed to the NYPD and assigned to Manhattan I gave them copies. My father use to give copies to co-workers visiting his New York office, so they could explore on their own. One of his business associates was staying at a hotel on Central Park South at 5th Ave. and looking for Central Park and FAO Schwartz on the corner of E59th St and 5th Ave. The map let him know that he was there. Central Park South is also called W 59th St. Avenue of the America's is also called 6th Ave and Lexington Ave 4th Ave by locals. I do find it odd that with all the copies I gave away I now have to purchase a copy. If your coming to experience New York, and everyone needs to visit and enjoy the energy, arts, shopping, museums, and everything else that is New York at least once, you need a copy of this map and an MTA card for the buses and subways to get around. And yes the subways in Manhattan are safe, fairly clean, and the best way to get around.

Several years ago, we purchased the Streetwise Paris map and were very happy with it. It's served us well through several trips. Prior to a recent trip to NYC, I decided to pick up the NYC version and was equally pleased.

The map is fairly compact and fits well into a day bag, inside jacket pocket, or even back pock of your jeans in a pinch. It folds very easily back to it's original folded configuration. The lamination keeps the map clean and damage-free. The map contents seem to be accurate. All-in-all, it was a worthwhile investment.

In today's digital age, paper maps are likely being used less and less. Everyone has a smart phone with Google Maps or similar. But I found in the city, it's still nice to have a printed map. GPS reception is quite limited with so many tall buildings around. And by the time you pull out your iPhone, and click and tap and search for your destination, you could be well on your way after consulting a handy printed map such as this.

Well worth the price paid.
