'Don't leave home without STREETWISE.' --The New York Times

'STREETWISE is an absolute travel essential.' --Travel + Leisure Magazine

'In a strange city, your sense of direction is only as good as the map in your hands. The best maps to carry are published by STREETWISE.' --Chicago Daily Herald

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

I found it very useful in a 3 days visit to Rome.
Valerita
The downsides are that the print is pretty small and sometimes the large 'attraction' icons on the map sometimes obscure the streets.
D. Baer
This map is very durable because it is laminated and easy to carry in a pocket or purse.

The Rome Streetwise is great! It is light enough to easily carry around - big enough to read even with bifocals - and has ALL the streets on it, even the little narrow ones. It also has the metro stations clearly identified. So, with this in one hand and your metro ticket in the other - you can go anywhere you need to go in Rome to see ALL the major sites and most of the smaller ones too. You don't need a car or taxi in Rome - just your streetwise and a metro ticket. In fact, by looking at the Streetwise, we could see that many attractions were grouped close enough to each other that we could use the map to just walk from one to the other. (Ex: Spanish steps to Pantheon) I wouldn't go there without one of these.

Just returned from eight days of walking in Rome. This is the only map we needed to find our way to everything that was of interest to us. It seems that just about every street and alleyway is listed and shown to scale (which is not the case with the free "tourist" maps). Experienced the joy of just wandering around following our noses to one interesting area after another, always knowing that our trusty "Streetwise Rome" would come to the rescue when we wanted to reach a particular destination. We ventured to the Borghese Gallery, the Vatican, to Trastevere, Palatine Hill, the Colosseum, Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps, Via Veneto, the Baths of Diocletian and from and back to the Termini Train Station. Including having the map out in the rain on several occassions, it still looks like new. The best thing is, it is only 4" X 8.5" when folded in your pocket and so easy to flip open to use (unlike so many other maps that you must unfold in several directions).
The map also has sketches of many of the sights you will be looking for to help you quickly find them. While we only used the Metro once, all the stations are clearly marked. If you want to spend less time folding and unfolding the map and more time enjoying the sights, you may find this product very much to your liking.

I have field tested my copy.... Getting late in the evening, raining, wind picking up, tourists are cursing their free maps fom the hotel lobby. I also have become lost and disoriented. I quickly flip out my Streetwise map and orient myself in the right direction of my hotel in an instant.

Next morning, fair weather, I check my streetwise map again to plot my days perigranatsione....I never got lost once, and found things that I did not expect to see, thanks to the lovely 3D icons on my map.

Before you say that what I am saying is all blather, lemme say this. This was my third visit to Rome in bad weather and in good. This was my best visit ever. The same also when I visited Naples using a streetwise map.

Phil.

This map is great. All the streets, sites, taxi stands and bus routes are right on there. It's the only map you'll need in Rome. It's even waterproof (or sweatproof - which proved to me more important!!!).

I bought this map this month for my trip to Rome. Sorry to say that this map was completely useless. Where you need this most - in the classical quarters of Rome, where the alleys are really narrow - you need a magnifying glass to read the map because the print is really tiny. The much bigger map of Rome provided free by the hotel where I stayed was most useful.

Rome is a hard city to map. Lots of small streets hidden down even smaller streets (but some how the Italians still drive 70 down them), but sometimes those are the streets that you need to find. The free map I got at my hotel was MUCH better than this map and I ended up not using it.

The folding laminated feature is great. The fact that part of the map is on one side and part on the back is not great. It is not clear how it continues. The map also does not show the outskirts of Rome.

Do NOT buy this map! It is garbage. The free map from the hotel was much better plus the hotel staff pointed out highlights on the hotel map. The Streetwise map is narrow in height and covers Rome on both sides. So it is almost impossible to follow a route across the city since the opposite sides do not line up. We stayed near Termini train station on the west side and went to the Vatican on the east side. The map was almost useless for this route since the entire city is not covered on one side. Try figuring this out at night with only street lights to see the map.
