Rick Steves has spent 100 days every year since 1973 exploring Europe. Rick produces a public television series (Rick Steves' Europe), a public radio show (Travel with Rick Steves), and an app and podcast (Rick Steves Audio Europe); writes a bestselling series of guidebooks and a nationally syndicated newspaper column; organizes guided tours that take thousands of travelers to Europe annually; and offers an information-packed website (RickSteves.com). With the help of his hardworking staff of 80 at Europe Through the Back Doorin Edmonds, Washington, just north of SeattleRick's mission is to make European travel fun, affordable, and culturally broadening for Americans.
Rick Steves does a number of things really well. He offers extremely practical advice about travel logistics and is geared towards the middle class traveler of modest economic means. There are lots of good money saving options and tips. The target audience also favors families and older travelers, I believe, as there is relatively less coverage of night life options. Steves also includes Salzburg and environs which makes sense if one is traveling through Bavaria and saves you from purchasing a second guidebook. Overall, it was very helpful in planning my trip to Germany and Salzburg
Things I don't like: the constant reminders to mention or show this book to get a booking discount starts to wear a little thin. It gives the impression that you're part of this secret club in the know, but are you really? A lot of people buy these guides. The coverage is also uneven, compared to, say, Lonely Planet. I know he's trying to be selective - what makes the cut for a 2-3 week trip in his opinion. But there are many worthwhile sites that are absent - Heidelberg (he finds it too touristy), Lübeck, and Bremen, for example. Finally, I'm taking off a star for problems with the Kindle edition - very hard to navigate and the maps don't scale up and can be hard to read.

I was surprised at Rick Steves' assessment of Köln (Cologne), which I consulted before our recent visit there on a business trip. Sure, it's not as picturesque as some other German cities because it was flattened in WW II, but in a walk around town we stumbled across parts of the original Roman city wall of Colonia Agrippina almost 2000 years old that were still standing, and a wonderful underground museum of the excavated Roman city is right across from the famous cathedral. Had some truly great meals there of classic German specialties, and if you want to see some unbombed history, take the 1-hour train ride to Aachen and see the cathedral where Charlemagne was crowned head of the Holy Roman Empire. The interior of the church is an architectural and historical marvel not to be missed, and the old center of town offers plenty of places to eat well from Sauerbraten to pizza to kebabs. I wonder if Rick has been there yet!

Reviewed contents before and after, and the details are fantastic. Use this as a point of departure, it is not an all inclusive - every detail for everyone about every place. Provides enough on the key places, that you will have the confidence to seek your own off the tourist track and become a German Traveler to many German Gems.

I started by checking the book out from the library. This book I'll take with us. I have used the Rick Steves books on several trips to Europe and they are a very valuable resource

Rick Steves' really found a niche--European travel, and his guides give "self-planners" everything they need to know to plan their trips: Where to eat, where to stay, attractions, maps, and more. My wife and I love his travel guides!

This is a very informational guide to Germany, but he wrote nothing about Bremen or Bremerhaven. I love both of those cities and would like to learn more, but he doesn't even mention them. Sad.

What a great guide. We used this in our recent trip trough Germany and Eastern Europe and it helped us so much! From the moment we landed in Frankfurt airport, Rick helped us to navigate and to find the platforms for taking the direct train to Munich. We took some tours with the companies he recommended and they were all great. The only time we didn't follow his advice and hired another tour, we regretted it badly. The best tips he gives are about bypassing the long lines or how to make the most out of your money and time. For example, we avoided a waiting line of 2 hours when visiting the Pergamon Museum in Berlin because Rick suggested to buy the museum pass and book a time slot. Also, he has great advice about places to eat, drink, typical food, etc. If you are visiting the top sights or cities in Germany (Berlin, Munich, the romantic road), then this guide is perfect for you. But if you are looking to go off the beaten path, better look for something else.
