In Tokyo you might need to buy a better map or use a GPS since the city is so insane big and complex.
Lars Lande
Also, if you could get this on iPad, it would be better because this book weighs a bit much for a small paperback due to its density.

The lonely Planet Japan Country Guide is a fantastic travel book for travelers to use when they are beginning their planning.

I have read some glowing reviews of this LONELY PLANET GUIDE TO JAPAN but I feel a little diffident about adopting it as my one-and-only take-with for a first-time trip to Japan. Many of the reviews I've read are from expats or frequent visitors to Japan who appreciate the guide's thorough presentation of the details of Japan's top and most worthwhile sights. This is fine, but as a pending first-timer I want tips (not demands, but some guidance) of how to put together my own self tours, whether they are half-day shopping excursions or several days on the road, not just an estimation of the biggest and best destinations. This guide is colorful but the colors are not particularly helpful thematically. The travel information towards the rear is close to useless (only a couple of pages on the extensive Japanese passenger rail network; not surprisingly, I found JAPAN BY RAIL extremely thorough and useful since I do not intend to rent a car); the Tokyo map in the back is superficial and should not have been elevated to a selling point. I prefer a more "written" quality to the presentation of my travel information, more along the lines of a Frommer's or Rough Guide. Also, I like to travel light and cannot imagine lugging this volume to Japan and back. I may tear out some of the pages because the information in it is crisp and up-to-date, but those are details and details do not make a trip.

I brought this book while we were at the airport waiting for our first ever flight to Japan. We thought it was going to act like our personal guide in and about in Japan. The problem with this book is that it covers too much topics but not enough information about each one. And the things we really need for example maps, information on how to get here or there is not available. For example, if we looked up possible dinning places in this book, there is so little information about the restaurant that you'd end up on the internet looking up what the restaurant menu is, how to get there etc etc. You might as well use trip advisor or google- you get more information and the recommendations are much more up to date. We had to figure out everything ourselves in the end via internet and tour information guides. The maps are also horrible and not useful at all. Don't think you can get anywhere by using the map in this book. The should at least have some basic language guides so you can order at a restaurant or ask for directions. We did not use this book at all while we were in japan. I recommend using the website japan-guide.com; has everything you need to know about staying in Japan. The price of this book it is ridiculous. It's a throw away if you ask me.

Ive been a fan of Lonely Planet and they have been my travel guide of choice in the past. Its a good guide for those on a medium budget (i.e, between backpacking and staying in 5 star hotels). I bought this for my 3rd trip to Japan, largely because of my past satisfaction with Lonely Planet and because it was recently updated and had the most number of pages. However, the most recent edition has a lot more pages than the previous edition and it seems that they were more focused on quantity than quality. The section on the area that I visited seemed like it was copied off of Wikipedia. It had facts, but its recommendations, background and insights were poor. Just to be sure I wasnt imagining this (and because Im going to Japan again in several months), I checked out the section on the area that I visited in the older Fordor's guide and found it to be much more insightful and had better advice. So, I recommend the Fordor's guide over the Lonely Planet, just for Japan.

I got this book for traveling in Japan for a month, and it really helped my allot planning! It has many useful tips, and what I really liked was suggestions of what to do in each city. When it came to Tokyo I had some trouble, because the city is so insane big so I got lost several times. The pull out map of the metro system helped some. But this map is not the entire truth, as it's impossible to get all details there. If I could want for something more in these guidebooks it definitely would be more pull out maps! In Tokyo you might need to buy a better map or use a GPS since the city is so insane big and complex. Would have been nice if the "survival" tips was collected more in front instead of here and there. The layout of the book is excellent with nice pictures to give you some ideas.

Found that book was heavy to carry around for the info that I used. I had searched internet for info which had to supplement the book. Did not seem to have the details especially on how to get to sights since Japan's transportation system is pretty complex. Would have liked to have the JR train map as well as the subway map that was provided in the book.

The text is fine, and I found the restaurant recommendations accurate and useful. But when I travel in an unfamiliar city, I like to have decent maps to use. I had the hard copy of this travel guide at home, and the maps are fine. I thought it would be smart to take the ebook versions (I was traveling in three countries) of the travel guides instead of multiple books. Who knew Lonely Planet would publish ebooks and not convert the maps to a usuable format? I bought a magnifying glass in China and still couldn't use the ebook version of these guides while out on the streets each day. I suppose I could have investigated this first, but usable maps seem such a basic and obvious use of travel guides.
