Book Description

Through his touching life story, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard J. Riordan offers his unique insights on how he turned around L.A. -- and how the country can realize better times.

About the Author

Richard J. Riordan is a cutting-edge venture capitalist, lawyer, and philanthropist. In 1993, he became the mayor of Los Angeles – a time when the world-famous city was facing the brink of disaster after the deadly Los Angeles Riots. Through innovative leadership and policies, Riordan returned L.A. to its former glory and set it on the right track for a prosperous future for all Angelenos. The former mayor continues to be one of the most popular public figures in Los Angeles, and he continues to dedicate his life to helping poor families.

Patrick Range McDonald is an award-winning investigative journalist and former staff writer at L.A. Weekly, where he covered politics, education, and the environment. In 2011, McDonald won the “Journalist of the Year” award from Los Angeles Press Club.

Throughout his tenure of one of the most important American cites, Riordan worked tirelessly to turn around
and save this wonderful City of the Angels. His love of the City and it’s Angelenos shines forth page after
page in this fine memoir. Over shadowed by Guiliani and New York, Riordan accomplished more and asked
for less in return. His humility is the sign of great leadership, vision and passion. Dick was “tough enough to
turn LA around.”

“Compassionate Pragmatism” was a masterful stroke of ethics, insight and timing. It is a call to the people of Los
Angeles and all of the USA in times like today’s. Competence and pragmatism will always win out over shallow
ideologies and short term fixes. His coining the term and implementing it with great success is testimony to
his genius and prescience. Of course, in order to qualify as “pragmatic” it has to work over the long
term and for that it needs to be grounded in absolute moral principals. Many of the programs and positions
that worked for a large city may not play as well at the State and National level. Nevertheless, please let’s
pray for more “Compassionate Pragmatism” in Sacramento, Albany and Washington.

Riordan pioneered the concept of “Inverse Condemnation” and both benefitted and suffered for the innovation.
Society at large benefits from the legal concept as it is one of the important tools to restrain run away government.
As we have seen since the Riordan tenure in Los Angeles, property rights and the rights of individual
private ownership need to prevail. Though his mayoral term saw the other side of inverse condemnation it
is arguably one of the more compelling arguments for smaller and constrained governance.

The Mayor is a great book written by a great man. Mayor Riordan truly turned Los Angeles around at a time of its greatest need. His pragmatism, integrity and compassion before, during and after his mayoral service has made the world a better place. His "get it done" style of leadership through delegation of authority to the right people as set forth in The Mayor provides a lesson for us all. The book is an honest and forthright account of his life and leadership and hopefully will serve as a useful guide to others on how to make the right things happen.
