About the Author

Rick Steves has spent 100 days every year since 1973 exploring Europe. Rick produces a public television series (Rick Steves' Europe), a public radio show (Travel with Rick Steves), and an app and podcast (Rick Steves Audio Europe); writes a bestselling series of guidebooks and a nationally syndicated newspaper column; organizes guided tours that take thousands of travelers to Europe annually; and offers an information-packed website (RickSteves.com). With the help of his hardworking staff of 80 at Europe Through the Back Door—in Edmonds, Washington, just north of Seattle—Rick's mission is to make European travel fun, affordable, and culturally broadening for Americans.

More About the Author

Rick Steves advocates smart, affordable, perspective-broadening travel. As host and writer of the popular public television series Rick Steves' Europe, and best-selling author of 40 European travel books, he encourages Americans to travel as "temporary locals." He helps American travelers connect much more intimately and authentically with Europe -- and Europeans -- for a fraction of what mainstream tourists pay.

Over the past 20 years, Rick has hosted over 100 travel shows for public television, and numerous pledge specials (raising millions of dollars for local stations). His Rick Steves' Europe TV series is carried by over 300 stations, reaching 95 percent of U.S. markets. Rick has also created two award-winning specials for public television: Rick Steves' European Christmas and the ground-breaking Rick Steves' Iran. Rick writes and co-produces his television programs through his company, Back Door Productions.

Rick Steves also hosts a weekly public radio program, Travel with Rick Steves. With a broader approach to travel everywhere, in each hour-long program Rick interviews guest travel expert, followed by listener call-ins. Travel with Rick Steves airs across the country and has spawned a popular podcast. Rick has also created a series of audio walking tour podcasts for museums and neighborhoods in Paris, Rome, Florence and Venice (with more tours, including London, coming in 2010).

Rick self-published the first edition of his travel skills book, Europe Through the Back Door (now updated annually), in 1980. He has also written more than 40 other country, city and regional guidebooks, phrase books, and "snapshot" guides. For several years, Rick Steves' Italy has been the bestselling international guidebook sold in the U.S. In 2009, Rick tackled a new genre of travel writing with Travel as a Political Act, reflecting on how a life of travel has broadened his own perspectives, and travel can be a significant force for peace and understanding in the world. Rick's books are published by Avalon Travel, a member of the Perseus Books Group.

In addition to his guidebooks, TV and radio work, Rick is a syndicated newspaper columnist with the Tribune Media Services. He appears frequently on television, radio, and online as the leading authority on European travel.

Rick took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. By the time he reached 18, Rick jokes, "I realized I didn't need my parents to travel!" He began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD), a business which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a well-traveled staff of 70 full-time employees. ETBD offers free travel information through its travel center, website (www.ricksteves.com), European Railpass Guide, and free travel newsletters. ETBD also runs a successful European tour program with more than 300 departures -- attracting around 10,000 travelers -- annually.

Rick is outspoken on the need for Americans to fit better into our planet by broadening their perspectives through travel. He is also committed to his own neighborhood. He's an active member of the Lutheran church (and has hosted the ELCA's national video productions). He's a board member of NORML (working to reform marijuana laws in the USA). And Rick has provided his local YWCA with a 24-unit apartment building with which to house homeless mothers.

Rick Steves spends about a third of every year in Europe, researching guidebooks, filming TV shows, and making new discoveries for travelers. He lives and works in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington, where his office window overlooks his old junior high school.

Customer Reviews

Any travel to Europe should not be without a Rick Steves Guide book.

We booked through a tour company so we didn't use any of his hotel recommendations, but we did try several of the restaurants he recommended with great success.

Reading about the places adds on to the excitement of the planning and I feel like I know the place even before going there.

I traveled to Athens, Greece for a conference. I did not know that the conference organizers were going to provide a local guide for a day trip to the Acropolis, so I bought this book and read the Acropolis section, downloaded and listened the MP3 Acropolis walk audio guide while the coach inched to the Acropolis parking lot through heavy traffic. On the site, Rick's book won hand's down: he (from the pages of his book on my BlackBerry) provided a much richer, more organized and enjoyable experience than the seasoned local guide. Again, Rick's personal and accessible style building on the fantasy of the reader, precise "I have seen the place" practical guidance, his opinions and intrepid cutting out unnecessary and unimportant detail made my day. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Our trip is to Athens, Satorini, and Mykonos. I bought six travel books and of them, this and Frommer's Greek Islands are by far the best. The others try to pack too much info about every island, and thus, doesn,t focus enough specifically. This book is filled with great info!

We bought this book because we love Rick's show on PBS and he did not disappoint. We used the Athens portion extensively and found the guides to the major sites to be the perfect combination of history, detail, and humor. For example: Rick's guide to the Archeological Museum in Athens gives step by step instructions on how to steer through the many exhibits and still make the most of your time. It's clear from his attitude and enthusiasm that he loves the Greeks and traveling in Greece. Note: You can also download audio tours for free from his website. But, if you can't do that, he gives almost the same tour in written form in his book. All of his hints about getting around in the country were spot-on, such as daily reminders about which sites are open during the week and their hours. Since I am a total ancient ruins junky, this was very important. He also gives the best hints for buying discount tickets to the sites. Rick's City Walks give you a lovely introduction to the neighborhoods and an entryway into the local culture. We used these on the days when we didn't have a set "museum" agenda. We used his recommendations for restaurants and were pleasantly surprised by the good food in all of them (even though all the customers have Rick Steves' books in their hands). I was disappointed that the book had almost nothing on Crete, but then realized that its not a part of the Peloponnese! Crete deserves a book on its own. The true surprise about Greece was that almost everyone spoke English and almost everyone was deeply warm, friendly, and kind. Thanks to Rick for a great trip!

This book is a great resource for planning a trip to Greece and it has a very complete index. Unfortunately, there are no page numbers (yes, it is possible to do that) and the index entries are not active links (which would have been ideal). So the index turns out to be a list that doesn't lead to locations in the text. For me, this deficiency is serious; I regret purchasing the Kindle version and would definitely prefer the paperback version (which surely does have page numbers).

I would not go to Europe without RS. I visited Greece during the summer of 2012 and had a fabulous time. Referred to RS guide constantly and it did not steer me wrong.

This is an absolute must. I have tried 2 other books (not naming them) and few other travel shows - but none and I say again, none of them were as thorough and explanatory as Rick Steve was in his book. I was particularly confused about all the different names the same island Santorini (Thira, Fira, Oia etc that are used interchangeably in a lot of books) can hold and Rick was amazing to teach me how these could be different spots in the same island itself. Definitely would recommend it others.

I bought it hoping to get more info on day trips from athens and this book came up short. Great book for basic info on athens but could use more information on surrounding areas of Athens.
