I am from Costa Rica and work as a birding tour guide, I have seen many maps but this is mp is one of the best I have seen. Fairly updated and waterproof, I would say go for this one.

We should have bought this map before we planned our trip. We went there for our honeymoon and we had a blast. The roads there are, hmm, different... Street names are rare, but between local directions and this map we at least made it close to where we wanted to be. This has a lot of great features like where activities are located with specific icons, blown up areas of popular destinations, and as it says it is waterproof (great for a rainforest no?).
If we had bought this before we planned our trip it would have given us a general idea of what to do where without spending a lot of time online researching. First, let me say that while 3G and GPS signals are strong, we had more issues with the software and directions not being up to date (or correct for that matter) and it's good we brought a physical map as a backup. We ended up ditching the GPS and relying on the map only because it was easier and better. So, my advice, skip the GPS from the start and just buy this instead!

It is durable and accurate and will be used in return trips. It gave a sense of where we were, where we wanted to be and what the relationship was between places and roads. The wiggles and joggles were accurate and the printing was nicely clear. Bring a map with you. It was hard to find a good one there. Even if you have GPS which we did we referred to this well appointed map.

This map worked well for when we we were in Costa Rica. It is useful for finding our way around some of the towns but you really need a GPS for the country.

Costa Rica is greatly handicapped by the near-total absence of street signs, route numbers, and addresses. No map can overcome this serious flaw in travel. With that in mind, and therefore unable to name most roads and streets, this map was extraordinary. Two things in particular are commendable: the durable construction puts it above reproach, especially in a hot climate with sweaty hands; likewise the detailed local maps with important and popular establishments in the most popular destinations are extremely useful, helpful even to our local, Costa Rican guides. Finally, seeing this map in the packs of several other European travelers at various other points demonstrated its universal appeal and favor. An essential accoutrement for the traveler to this tranquil and lovely country.
