This is the best, most comprehensive and useful guidebook to NYC that I've seen, and I've read and collected many guidebooks. Oriented toward meeting the needs of just about every kind of traveler and about every kind of budget, the book is divided into many helpful sections which provide both information and recommendations whether or not you know where you'll be going or how to spend your days and evenings.

The first section, about NYC, includes chapters on all of the following: the top 16 sites, what's need, need to know (e.g. budget it defines as less than $100 for lodging), getting around, top itineraries, recommendations (for museums, night life, skyline views, green spaces, off the beaten path etc.), month by month event calendar, NYC with Kids, NYC like a local, NYC for Free (includes walking tours and free or donation-only museum times), Eating, Drinking and Night Life, Gay and Lesbian, Best Entertainment, Shopping and Sports and Activities. There is also a section on day trips from NYC.

The second and largest section addresses some of the above topics, as divided by neighborhoods , including Brooklyn and Queens. These neighborhood chapters discuss top sights, other sights, eating, drinking and nightlife, entertainment, shopping, and sports and activities. The most recommended sights in each neighborhood are discussed.

Another major section of the book is devoted to sleeping accommodations, with recommendations oriented toward budget, views, families, honeymoons, jet set orientation and neighborhood. Another useful bit of information includes a chart noting the positives and negatives in regard to staying in each major neighborhood.

But this is not all.

Living as close as I do to New York City, I don't need tourist information for the first-timer. Of course, this guide has the usual attractions, which don't change much over time. So, I headed first to the "What's New" section, where I got some good ideas for my next trip into the city. I love low-key ideas, like the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park or Governors Island Park. The city is too exhausting to always be on the run.

As always in the Lonely Planet guides, the city is broken into geographic sections -- the "Neighborhoods at a Glance" page gives you a good overview. Other good features are the "Top Tip" boxes, neighborhood walks and "Top Five" attractions in each neighborhood. Also, this is the first time I've encountered suggestions for twitter feeds and Instagram spots. (I guess we used to call them Kodak shots.) There are plenty of suggestions for museums and libraries and I appreciate the attention to places that aren't art-related, like the NYC Police Museum, Fraunces Tavern or Castle Clinton.

There's a great "Understand New York" section, which covers its history from all facets, including art, architecture, literature, food, politics and music. And, as always, a pull-out map. The only thing I don't like about the guide is that the color photos are artificially super-saturated with color. They look like something out of a 1950s tourist brochure. Besides looking unreal, the photos try to make the city into something it isn't. The streets aren't all pretty, the buildings not always bathed in an amber glow, the grass not always that green. It sets up expectations that can't be fulfilled.

As always, great info, but the e-book/kindle version is a bit terrible to navigate. Instead of seeing the whole page, you'll get snippets of the columns that you have to scroll through. I only opted for the non-print version because this updated print version hadn't been released yet.

I live within a 45 minute ride (with light traffic) to mid-town Manhattan. As a kid, I could see the skyline from my top floor windows so New York City is as familiar to me as my home town. Because the Big Apple is so, well, big and complex, it's unfair to expect a single book to tell the whole story of this great city. Having said that, the authors at the Lonely Planet have done a commendable guide laying out all of the tourist highlights with suggested walks and day trips that will give the new-to-NYC visitor a memorable experience. In addition to the big attractions like Grand Central Terminal (they get it right by not calling it a station), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park and the Empire State Building, the guide gives the reader insider tips like exploring the Whispering Gallery in Grand Central and suggesting a visit to one of my favorite little museums, The Frick Collection.

The City is really many little neighborhoods, each with its own special charm and attractions. The authors make suggestions for the visitors' itinerary that allow for logical and time conserving sight seeing, giving transportation advice, the major and some minor must-see places and, of course, good places to have a bite to eat. The headings they have chosen are simple and useful - Sights, Eating, Drinking & Nightlife, Entertainment, Shopping and Sports & Activities. Before each neighborhood chapter there is a thumbnail "Hot Tip" colin listing best places to eat and drink and even an unexpected surprise offering. These are so complete and wide reaching that I'm willing to bet that many NYC regulars and even some residents could learn a few things from these tips.
