Rick Steves has spent 100 days every year since 1973 exploring Europe. Rick produces a public television series (Rick Steves' Europe), a public radio show (Travel with Rick Steves), and an app and podcast (Rick Steves Audio Europe); writes a bestselling series of guidebooks and a nationally syndicated newspaper column; organizes guided tours that take thousands of travelers to Europe annually; and offers an information-packed website (RickSteves.com). With the help of his hardworking staff of 80 at Europe Through the Back Doorin Edmonds, Washington, just north of SeattleRick's mission is to make European travel fun, affordable, and culturally broadening for Americans.
Packing light isn't just about saving time or moneyit's about having a great traveling lifestyle. Rick Stevestravel expert and author of this brand new, colorful, lightweight city guide to Barcelonashares his tips for packing light while traveling:
1. Stick to a one bag limit: Rick’s self-imposed limit is 20 pounds in a 9" × 22" × 14" carry-on-size bag, which fits in an airplane's overhead bin!
2. Do a tourist test in town: Before flying to Europe, do a tourist test. Pack up completely, go into town, and practice being a tourist for an hour. Fully loaded, the goal is to be able to enjoy window-shopping. Can’t? Stagger home and thin things out.
3. Scrutinize: Spread everything out on the living room floor. Pick up each item one at a time and scrutinize it. Ask if the item is needed enough to justify carrying it around all summer.
4. When in doubt, leave it out: Don't pack for the worst-case scenario. Pack for the best-case scenario and simply buy something abroad to get out of any jams. Bring layers rather than taking a heavy coat. Think in terms of what can be left outnot what will be handy on the trip.
5. Pack light and bring the right guidebook: Whether traveling for three weeks or three months, pack exactly the same. Go casual, simple, and very light. Bring the right guidebook for your trip. Remember, there are two kinds of touriststhose who pack light and those who wish they had.
Rick Steves advocates smart, affordable, perspective-broadening travel. As host and writer of the popular public television series Rick Steves' Europe, and best-selling author of 40 European travel books, he encourages Americans to travel as "temporary locals." He helps American travelers connect much more intimately and authentically with Europe -- and Europeans -- for a fraction of what mainstream tourists pay.
Over the past 20 years, Rick has hosted over 100 travel shows for public television, and numerous pledge specials (raising millions of dollars for local stations). His Rick Steves' Europe TV series is carried by over 300 stations, reaching 95 percent of U.S. markets. Rick has also created two award-winning specials for public television: Rick Steves' European Christmas and the ground-breaking Rick Steves' Iran. Rick writes and co-produces his television programs through his company, Back Door Productions.
Rick Steves also hosts a weekly public radio program, Travel with Rick Steves. With a broader approach to travel everywhere, in each hour-long program Rick interviews guest travel expert, followed by listener call-ins. Travel with Rick Steves airs across the country and has spawned a popular podcast. Rick has also created a series of audio walking tour podcasts for museums and neighborhoods in Paris, Rome, Florence and Venice (with more tours, including London, coming in 2010).
Rick self-published the first edition of his travel skills book, Europe Through the Back Door (now updated annually), in 1980. He has also written more than 40 other country, city and regional guidebooks, phrase books, and "snapshot" guides. For several years, Rick Steves' Italy has been the bestselling international guidebook sold in the U.S. In 2009, Rick tackled a new genre of travel writing with Travel as a Political Act, reflecting on how a life of travel has broadened his own perspectives, and travel can be a significant force for peace and understanding in the world. Rick's books are published by Avalon Travel, a member of the Perseus Books Group.
In addition to his guidebooks, TV and radio work, Rick is a syndicated newspaper columnist with the Tribune Media Services. He appears frequently on television, radio, and online as the leading authority on European travel.
Rick took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. By the time he reached 18, Rick jokes, "I realized I didn't need my parents to travel!" He began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD), a business which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a well-traveled staff of 70 full-time employees. ETBD offers free travel information through its travel center, website (www.ricksteves.com), European Railpass Guide, and free travel newsletters. ETBD also runs a successful European tour program with more than 300 departures -- attracting around 10,000 travelers -- annually.
Rick is outspoken on the need for Americans to fit better into our planet by broadening their perspectives through travel. He is also committed to his own neighborhood. He's an active member of the Lutheran church (and has hosted the ELCA's national video productions). He's a board member of NORML (working to reform marijuana laws in the USA). And Rick has provided his local YWCA with a 24-unit apartment building with which to house homeless mothers.
Rick Steves spends about a third of every year in Europe, researching guidebooks, filming TV shows, and making new discoveries for travelers. He lives and works in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington, where his office window overlooks his old junior high school.
This pocket version was very handy for my recent trip to Barcelona. I was able to keep it in my purse, and refer to it as I was out and about. The different walks in the city were well laid out and I enjoyed using the book to help me explore. The only failure, was that even though this was the 2013 version, the entrance fees were already out of date. Also be aware that Rick recommends getting the BCN card, which no longer includes the Casa Mila. So the only advantage to getting the BCN card is direct admission to the Picasso Museum. Also I would recommend booking the online or ATM ticket for the Sagrada Familia for 9AM, there is a little bit of a line still to get in, but it moves fast, and once inside you have few fellow tourists for the 1st hour. Also, since this is just a pocket guide, it falls short on the day trips, so read the big guide before you go for more detailed descriptions.

Rick Steves pocket guides should be viewed as supplements to his outstanding, larger, comprehensive books. However, the pocket guides are handy, and the attractive layout and color photos make it a pleasure to use. The major strength of Pocket Barcelona and the others in the series is its helpful information about walking and cathedral tours.

Really enjoyed the smaller version of the larger Barcelona section of the Rick Steve's Spain book. Perfect size for putting in a day pack with my DSLR and wallet. Wish there were more pocket sized guides for all the other cities Rick travels too.
Only complaint, like all of Rick's books, are the maps are not to scale or detailed enough even with his basic instructions on where something is located. Best to use an actual pocket sized map for more accuracy.

We are Rick Steves fans and have watched all his programs that we can get access to. The Pocket Guide to Barcelona was useful for us during our recent visit to Barcelona. Several days I carried it with me in my back pocket to use for reference as we walked around the city. It was helpful for us to make better use of our limited time in Barcelona.

Thanks to Rick Steves, we covered Barcelona well. We enjoyed his frank comments and subtle humor. The organization of his book allowed us to see and experience many different parts of Barcelona, but he needs to include more street names. These street names won't always be enough, given the inefficient placement of many of the signs in the city, but they will certainly help a touist get around quickly.
We ate at his recommended La Bodegueta. We will upload a photo of the chefs holding this book if possible.
A helpful hint to add to this book would be which airlines are served in which airport terminals since there are no signs to indicate, and the line 46 bus driver who left us at the airport didn't know.

I found this small book to be so useful for everything we did. We did the walks - Gotic, El Born, Ramblas - and followed all the alleys and pathways. If not for the book we would have missed alot and were delighted on his recommendation to see the Barcelona History Museum. We were there on the first Sunday of the month (free) but it would have been worthwhile even if we had to pay. We took buses everywhere and liked the adventure. Rick has the bus routes listed for the various sites. We toured Parc Guell, Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, and Montjuic using the book for details on the sites.
