'Don't leave home without STREETWISE.' --The New York Times

'STREETWISE is an absolute travel essential.' --Travel + Leisure Magazine

'In a strange city, your sense of direction is only as good as the map in your hands. The best maps to carry are published by STREETWISE.' --Chicago Daily Herald

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

I've used the Streetwise maps in many cities of the world. They're compact, waterproof, and generally useful.
I've tried this one, but the Streetwise format just doesn't seem to work for Florence, which is made up of about five districts and where many of the sights (and there are a great many) are on side streets.
A better guide for Florence is the Knopf Citymap for Florence. It has a separate fold-out page for each district and excellent recommendations for shopping and restaurants for each one, yet is still sturdy and compact.
I recently purchased Knopf's map for Barcelona and was equally pleased. In the future, I'll check first to see if they have a map for cities I visit, and only buy a Streetwise map as a second choice./

I, also, have used Streetwise maps and been pleased. However, the Florence map is basically useless. It's awkward to use and difficult to read. Every tour book I've seen has a better map. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this item.

We purchased this map from AMAZON only weeks before our trip to Italy. Either it was incorrect from the start or has never been updated since its publication....or there are one way gremlins afoot at the publishers!!After trying every approach into central Florence using this map we realized that at least HALF of one way streets are WRONGLY MARKED! Finally we chucked the map and followed the actual street signs and found our hotel.

Driving directions can change on a dime (see previous review), but walking the streets, so to speak, rarely changes. There are maps with more detail, but this map is an essential. Lightweight, laminated (waterproof), pocket-sized, and with almost all the detail that most Florence visitors need. Fully-opened, it is still small and easy to use. A handy gazeteer lists many streets and monuments, with map grid locations. There are some very tiny streets/alleys that are hard to make out, but that is true for almost any pocket-sized folding map.

I have purchased several Streetwise for various cities. I found ALL of them to be useful. For Florence, it was particularly useful because the streets in Florence are narrow and not straight. You can easily get a bit lost - but not if you have the Streetwise map with you. You can use it to quickly get your location, and to see where the nearest piazza, church or museum is located. It also takes you across the Arno to the Piti Palace and Boboli Gardens. It is easy to carry and for someone who has progressed to bifocals -- easy to read.

This is one of many Streetwise maps I brought with me to Europe. I found every one to be useful. The maps allowed me to see exactly where I wanted to go. I marked off with a tape for each famous places that I wanted to visit. (Since the maps are laminated, I can remove and change the tape as many times as I want.) Seeing where the places were located helped me get a bearing of the locations and the distance separating them. It was a great way to familiarize myself in a unfamiliar city. Keep in mind, however, that we walked, not drove. I'm not sure how helpful these maps will be if you drove. All I know is that the visual display of the map helped me plan my itinerary. For instance, this map allowed me to visit as many famous Florence sites as I could possibly squeezed in the very limited time I had and still get me to the SMN train station to catch the train to Pisa. (How can one leave Italy without visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa?!) Without this map, I don't think I could've pull that off. (No, it's impossible to see EVERYTHING in Florence in 1 day! You need to be realistic and prioritize. You are on a vacation after all, not a marathon!) Thanks, Streetwise and Amazon.com!

Note: Index of hotels and places of interest are on the side of the map. It is rather small print so you may need your reading glasses.

I ordered this map for a trip to Florence in March 2014 and I am not disappointed!!! Great map folds and fits in your pocket and is laminated for multi-use!!!!! I also found a great way to mark on it without making a mess of it!!!!! Simply buy a pack of those little foil stick-on stars and "mark" your spots or streets of interest. It works great and they can later be peeled off one by one as you make your way around and complete your stops. I came up with this idea myself, but you may have other good ideas once you have this handy little companion in your hands. I also purchased the same maps for Rome and Venice. Happy travels!!!!
