Series: Thomas Guide Atlas Los Angeles and Orange County
I have used Thomas Guide maps for 15 years, and actually prefer using paper maps to Internet maps. For this reason, I bought the 2013 LA/OC edition as soon as it came out, even though I already owned the 63rd edition LA County (2009) and 12th edition OC/SD (2009) guides. The bottom line is that the 2013 version is a step backwards in quality from the previous guides. Freeways are now shown as a single line instead of two lines (one for each direction of travel), which eliminates fine details in on- and off-ramps. Also, this 2013 guide contains errors; some on- and off-ramps that were modified/eliminated due to construction in 2011 have not been updated in this guide. (I know this because I work near the area in question and the construction was along my daily commute.) The errors are present on both the map grids and the Freeway Access Map in the front of the guide. Obviously I don't know about the accuracy of the entire guide, but these errors give me pause. Finally, as noted in another review, the street names are not contoured like in the 2009 guide, making the overall appearance more slipshod. Bottom line, I would rather continue using my old Thomas Guides until Rand McNally gets its act together.

bought this product to use at work. the maps have a lot of mistakes including: roads that are misspelled, roads showing they connect when they don't, streets labeled incorrectly(long residential street has the correct name on one end, but has the incorrect name on the other end?wth?), streets that just aren't labeled on the map, etc, etc....if time is important to you, this map is definitely a negative. this map book was poorly made, the editor has no attention to detail.

Since Thomas Guide went to 'Editions' instead of a yearly book, the quality has steadily decreased. This year, streets that were there in the last edition have disappeared, zip codes are not listed in the back of the book along with the street names, and the block numbers on the actual pages are almost non-existent. Being in the transportation industry, and having to find residences all day every day, the Thomas guide used to be our best bet-better than GPS because you could always find multiple ways to get to a location-even when there was a road closure that your GPS wouldn't get you around. With the new books, there are so many triangles that say-look up this number and go to that page and look for this triangle and that number, etc... that it's nearly impossible to find anything, especially when we're trying to pickup a passenger at 4 am and there's very little light from the street lights and we're fighting to use our map books. :-(

I was very disappointed in the new format which I find less easy to read - both the change in font on the map itself, and the coloring system which is less clear than the old one. Overall it is much less impressive than the old Thomas Guide before it was swallowed up by Rand McNally.

This is a downgrade in quality and reprint. The details are not handwritten, it is shoddy workmanship., the streets and freeways are not smooth cornered, in any way, there is alot of details that were left out. for example some of the hov lanes are now missing, boulevards and hwy used to have 2 lines indicating a divided median, but no the details are worse,. they need to really really upgrade. Sorry, Thomas Guide, you went down in quality. Not what was used to be, The 1980's edition were the best, and some of the 2000 edition were much better in detail. This is just a downgrade to shoddy cartography. There is no art of cartography in this edition.

I have been using the Thomas Guides nearly every day for about 35 years now and I own Thomas Guides for 6 of the Southern California Counties. This is the sixth Los Angeles/ Orange County Thomas Guide that I've owned, I have never had any problems with them and I have always thought they were of high quality before now. There are streets missing, streets misnamed and a number of streets that are not listed in the index. I don't know why the quality has fallen off so bad but I will never buy another Thomas Guide.

The newer editions have been revised and to me, at least, appears to be harder to read. The print makes it harder to read. The zip codes are difficult to see, the streets appear to be more linear and do not have the curves the older maps. There is not as many street numbers on the map.
At least it matches the old book. The paper appears to be of lesser quality, and should at the very least, be reinforced where it is attached to the binder.
Though I have GPS, sometimes, it's nicer to have an overall view of the location when you are on the road.

The guide doesn't stray far from the core essence of a Thomas Guide. Street listings in the index, get the page # and grid location, find the street. I've seen other reviews say that there are quite a few mistakes in this version. I have noticed one, but to be fair the street is new, I haven't used the guide much, and I'm not familiar with the area. It's possible that this print occurred before the completion of the street. My biggest gripe with the guide is how small the print is. In this day and age of smart phones, google maps, etc, the only people I see using Thomas Guides are those who drive for a profession. As a driver myself, I want to find the streets quickly to save time and maximize my efficiency. Rand McNally should consider making larger prints, I wouldn't mind the extra pages. Some of the older drivers at my hub have older guides with larger prints and they're perfect for driving.
