The Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways is, as it says, a list of 300 scenic drives in the US (with one short detour through a Canadian province). As one might imagine, with 300 of them, the descriptions are relatively bare bones and brief. They typically range from 1-2 pages and start with a mileage count, an estimation of travel time, and if appropriate the best time to travel the road and any possible concerns (closing for weather, etc.). Many of them won't come as much of a surprise, especially those in the West and Southwest. It won't shock anyone, for instance, to learn that roads that head into Yellowstone National Park, or the Grand Canyon have some nice views. There are a few relatively unknown ones in here though.

The guides will usually give you the main highlights along the road, such as battlefields, major monuments, nature parks/reserves, museums, and the like. They'll also point out a few detours, most being within 20 miles of the major road, though a few area bit farther. The guides give a concise but informative description of the road itself and what one might see on the way, ranging from types of wildlife to land formations and sometimes some cultural opportunities. It does not give any information on lodging, though it does tell you of nearby information offices.

It's a good barebones starting point I'd say for anyone planning a trip. I'd use it as a source of ideas, then use the web and other guides to flesh out just what's along the path. I'm a big fan, for instance, of the Off the Beaten Path state guides, Roadside Geology, and Roadside America. The broad but shallow nature of the guide serves it better in that regard--as an idea generator--than as a take-it-with-you-and-follow-it guide

This is an updated version of the `Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways'. National Geographic seems to update and remake these about every 5 years. This version appears to be an improvement. There are about 300 drives in here from all 50 states.
The book is well done, dividing the US in 10 areas, including Alaska and Hawaii. There are many colour pictures and the book is made in a convenient size - it would fit in a glove compartment. The pages are of heavier glossy stock and the binding is solid. There are coloured tab markings on the edge of the pages to help you find the correct geographic selection. The index is arranged so that you can look up the state, or an attraction and even many of the better known roads such as Route 66 or the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I've had 2 other scenic drive books and this is the best one for the US in my opinion. I've lived and driven in many of these areas and the information seems accurate and there are attractions listed that I hadn't even thought of. They are not just the major ones such as National Parks. Each section has the drives highlighted on the states' region map and for each drive there is a small map with the total mileage, the time required, the season that the drive is available or better done in and a list of the highways. There are directions to travel and the attractions are listed within those directions with phone numbers and web sites and if there is an admission fee. There are not hotels, accommodations or food listings.

This book contains some excellent travel ideas. I appreciated the fact that some lesser known drives are included like some of the historic National Roads, the timber, oil and coal country drive in Pennsylvania, the Amish culture and crafts route in Indiana and the Apache Trail in Arizona. It's a nice to sit and plan and dream of discovering America and a great book to use while you are traveling.

This book is a better idea than a product. I have subscribed to National Geographic magazine for literally decades. And what is the magazine most famous for? Its gorgeous photography. And what is this book lacking in? Gorgeous photography. It's a lead-pipe cinch that most people aren't going to purchase this book and then immediately start out to drive all of its 300 drives. So a book like this should be a kind of planning guide -- a place for would-be travelers to narrow down their bucket lists of must-do drives. But how can you do that if the book is short on showing you what you will see on a particular by-way?

The organization of the book makes sense, and it certainly covers the entire country well. But it is only a jumping off point for those of you who are looking to start your travel itineraries. My dream for retirement is to drive the USA with my husband. This book might give me some ideas, but it's not complete, and I was disappointed in that. I know that there are better guides out there. I'm going to keep looking.

Not recommended.

I really like National Geographic guides for two reasons: (1) Any place that National Geographic recommends is usually worth going to; and (2) if you have questions about whether a place is worth going to, the guide provides plenty of beautiful pictures to help you make up your mind.

This is a terrific guide to scenic highways in places all over the United States. The guide provides sufficient information as to what you can expect to see on the drive and the best times to go. Although there are some directions, bringing a map is always a good idea, as is researching the drive in other places ahead of time to avoid problems.

This guide will definitely give you some great ideas of places to drive around where you live and when you go on vacation.
