Eyewitness always does a very nice treatment of the target country. For me this was more of a planning/what's possible book than an actual guidebook you would carry along with you (it's a bit heavy). Use Rick Steve's for that. I seem to remember being more impressed with the first one I bought years ago (France), the one on Germany had plenty of pictures, but many of them seemed very tiny, almost like thumbnails, making it hard to appreciate the subject. Nevertheless, a great reference for planning a trip, and highly recommended.

This guide book is informative and full of glossy pictures. It explains Germany and its history/culture very nicely. But it doesn't provide too many helpful tips for the lay traveler. It's also heavy heavy heavy! I had to leave it behind near the end of my two week trip. By then, I was choke full of history and my shoulder couldn't handle the extra weight. Sad b/c it wasn't cheap and I would have liked to keep it as a reference book.

I have a whole library of DK Travel Books. They are beautiful, informative and very helpful. the only drawback is their weight which means i don't travel with them, but copy the pages i need.

As usual, the Eyewitness Guide proved extremely informative on our recent road trip to Germany. Although we didn't use it to pick the specific places we went, for many of the attractions in the places we did visit, it was a great overview. Since it covers the entire country of Germany (which has a gazillion interesting places), it is excellent for an overview but can be supplemented by web information for more detail.

We always look at the 4 or 5 standard guides for each country we visit and as usual this time we decided DK Eyewitness the best one. We like the coloured pictures and the cut out views of the important buildings plus we often use the recommended walking routes around the towns.
