Editorial Reviews

Review

"Not only are the books visually beautiful, they really do take you on a journey...the drawings contained are so exquisitely detailed and luscious. The text is simple, clean and informative, with a hint of mischeviousness that kids adore. But it is the detailed pictures in this large format book that truly capture the heart - not only for their beauty but for the extraordinary, everyday life detail that has been poured into them." ~kids-bookreview.com

This book, and the entire series of books by Miroslav Sasek, are just wonderful. The story introduces children (ideally from ages of about 3 - 7) to the magic of Paris. The book evokes a sense of wonder, while relaying facts about Paris that children will find very captivating. We see things like Notre Dame, a ticket to ride the Metro, and a gendarme. The illustrations are just lovely, done in a style that helps provide a leaping off point for imagining even more about the story. A marvel of brilliance masquerading as simplicity! The book has been in print for nearly 50 years, and deserves it place along with other children's classics of the city like "Make Way for Ducklings."

A beautiful reprint of this classic. M. Sasek is one of my favorite childrens book illustrators. This book takes you back to Paris in 1959. The drawings are really stylish.
This book is a real treat. Check out the London, New York and San Fransisco books as well.

Written and drawn in 1959 this children's book taught me a thing or two about a city I thought I already knew a lot about. The pictures and scenes are wonderful in bright colors and include most of the major sites in Paris from "le metro" to Montmartre and the Champs Elysees.

There have been a few of the drawings, or accompanying text, that have been asterisked to reflect the changes that have occurred in Paris since 1959 but if you are taking young ones over I highly recommend this book as a way to make some of what they will see a little more understandable for them.

This book has created a fabulous insight into the world of travel for my children. It has compelled us all to take a language course in French and to travel here and put our dreams into reality. It has planted the seed of intrigue and wonderment to which my children seek out this book to read at bedtime.

...and I'm 42. I purchased this book for my Godson prior to my visit to France. After I went, I read the book again with him. I fell in love with the book and purchased my own copy as a keepsake. It brought back so much. It's truly a magical book especially if you have any knowledge or love of Paris. I can't recommend it enough.

We bought this book as we got our two and six year old boys psyched for Paris, but wound up falling in love with the book ourselves. Dated, sure, but so is Paris.

The best part was when we got back, because so many of the small things we did were in there (like boats in the fountain!). A great book for everyone.

Once I have found this book at Amazon and I wondered about the Czech name of the author. I got to explore the book and realized that he was a Czech, what a mystery, we have never been taught about him at school (of no type). His books were written in English after he emigrated from the Czechoslovakia and were never published in Czech. I got too amazed and curious about this book, so I bought it, read it and love it! All the pictures and the style he wrote it in. I just feel cheated, that we Czechs do not know nothing about this wonderful books and about the author.

We thought we were taking our almost 2 year-old to Paris with us when I bought this book. We ended up going without her, but my daughter loves reading this book. She was too young then for me to read word by word so I simplified it a bit and sang some songs with the story (songs about train, the bus and the donkey). She learned about cats, the painter, the Eiffel tower, the "Un fort", the church, etc. She loves Mona Lisa and knows that Mona Lisa "lives" in the Louvre. She often asks about Mona Lisa and gets really excited knowing that the page is coming up.

The funny this was that she all a sudden blurted out "Eiffel Tower" during our trip to CA. She saw the electric tower that looked a little bit like Eiffel and thought that was it! I think she needs a Paris trip in the future so she can see the REAL Eiffel tower;)
