Love lonely planet travel guides.

Overall this is a very comprehensive and well thought out country guide and contains a huge amount of information for the visitor to Spain.

The book includes a full-size map of Barcelona, which I didn't find useful since I didn't visit Barcelona, but no decent map of Madrid.

I used Lonely Planet, Rick Steves and Fodors for planning a recent trip to Spain. All three were good. Overall, I'd say using more than one is the best thing to do, to get a wider range of recommendations. But if you're going to use just one I think this was marginally better than the others and would be my first choice. They're all good for generally planning where to go, when, etc. They all help you identify the same major don't-miss attractions in each area.

The couple things I liked better about Lonely Planet were (1) it also had a great 20ish page history of Spain and a short section of current event issues that was helpful grounding for what we were going to visit, and (2) it had a few good sections on hidden gems -- like the top places to find a collection of good tapas spots in Madrid, which we wound up using several evenings.

I'd also recommend taking a look at Tripadvisor particularly for activities in each locale. The group voting to get a vendor to the top of that list really does indicate a good supplier (e.g., we found Barcelona Segway Glides as one of the top rated activities there and it was a good find).

I first got the Rick Stevens book on Spain. I was stunned that almost the whole fast side of the country and the islands didn't exist as far as he was concerned. I contacted his company to complain and the response was that he can't cover the whole country and so did what he could. I pointed out that the title is Spain, not The Parts I Like in Spain. The response was "if you want comprehensive coverage of Spain, we suggest you buy a Lonely Planet Guide." So I returned his book and got Lonely Planet.
I'm in Spain now and the book was great helping me plan. I also like to be spontaneous with my plans and have found it to be very useful. Rick was right!

It is really hard to find info in this book. Search is quirky and often doesn't find even major sites - and when they are found a long list of places they are MENTIONED is listed, not just the section you want to go to (list includes comments from blogs or something). Makes one long for an old fashioned book index (which should have been included so that one could click on and go to the page just like in an old fashioned book.
Maps are displayed in an unreadable form and don't have highlights for the site you are trying to find (if you could read it), nor is there any way to link to a google map directly to get directions.
Finding photos of important sites is next to impossible.
Many of the entries have links to web sites - which I guess would be nice if you had wifi access, but if you are trying to use it like a regular book for basic info it is almost useless.

A real disappointment. I was hoping not to have to carry heavy books but this is more frustrating than useful :(
I used this on an android with kindle app but have no reason to think the native kindle would have different search results or map displays.

This is a solid guide book for use as an overall country reference; like most Lonely Planet guides, it covers the must-see sights and the peaks for each region and major city, along with cursory dining and lodging information (personally, I could do with less of that--I'll go to TripAdvisor or other online forums for reviews and tips there). Like other Lonely Planet guides, it includes a nice summary of Spanish history and culture, along with an "essentials" section (aka survival guide) and a small language reference.

My wife and I used a prior version of Lonely Planet's Spain guide to help plan our vacation a couple of years back; we traveled to Barcelona and along a swath of Andalucia (Grenada, Malaga, Ronda, and a few other stops along the way), and found that version of the guide very helpful indeed. To be honest, I don't notice that many significant improvements between the versions, though of course having the most up-to-date information is always a plus.

The side trips for the various cities and regions are great information to have, too.

The downsides: this is a *big*, thick, and heavy travel guide; it's of a similar size to, say, their China guide, and well over 900 pages long. Use it to plan your trip; don't try to stick it in your purse or briefcase to lug about with you while you're traveling. (And unfortunately, there seem to be issues with the Kindle version which make carrying it electronically a less-than-optimal solution.) Spain is a large and diverse country, though, and there's a lot of territory to cover, which this Lonely Planet guide does quite well.

I downloaded my KINDLE version of this book on my ipad, so happy that I didn't have to carry the book with me to Spain.
I was sorely disappointed with the KINDLE version. You could read all the information about different places to visit, however, when you wanted to do a search on a specific city or sight, it would list every single thing mentioned in the book. It was difficult to manipulate and single down the information. I ended up having to read through everything anyways and that was not fun as my husband was driving and waiting for my response. I'm heading to Poland this Fall and will be carrying my Lonely Planet guide instead of a KINDLE version. Lonely Planet guides are my guides of choice, but not the KINDLE versions.
