'Don't leave home without STREETWISE.' --The New York Times

'In a strange city, your sense of direction is only as good as the map in your hands. The best maps to carry are published by STREETWISE.' --Chicago Daily Herald

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

Streetwise maps are laminated and meant to fold up small enough to fit in a hip pocket. This map of Washington DC includes a small street index as well as an index of local attractions. There are also indexes for top attractions, parks, and public buildings. The map itself is very clear and well marked. It includes a small separate map showing the routes that the Metro trains follow. Additionally, there is page that shows a blown up map of the Mall that is amazing in its clarity as it really highlights the locations of all the museums, monuments, etc. in this highly popular tourist area.

One should be aware, however, that Amazon sells two different Streetwise maps for DC. One is labeled as "Compact" and is just 6.75" tall. The other is a bit bigger at 8.6". While this doesn't sound like a big difference, it has a huge impact on how easy it is to read the map. The small one has very fine print and can be quite difficult to make out. The larger one will still fit in a pocket and will also take major strain off of your eyes. Make sure you have the right one prior to ordering, amazon even mingles the reviews for the two so it can be a bit confusing.

I was in Washington DC for a month with my husband (he was on business) and I spent my days touring the sites. This map had been recommended to me, but I honestly wasn't so sure how handy it would be.

OMG - it really was perfect. There's not much you could do to improve it. I/we used this map every day. It has an enlarged portion that covers the Mall where all the monuments are located. This part is conveniently on the outside when the map is folded up so you can discretely look at it without giving the impression that you're a lost tourist. It was also handy for locating the metro stops in relation to the sites.

I am a very experienced traveler and this product deserves nothing short of a high recommendation.

These laminated maps are great. They're durable and survive being toted around from pocket to bag to car to wherever. I always get one for my travel destinations and wouldn't be without it. This DC map has well-marked Metro stops and places of interest. It packs as much as it can into its size.

This map is full of information and marked with land marks. It has the subway station on it and even a list of places of interest... Unfortunately, it is full of misspellings ("Georgetown Univ. Law Venter" and "Nat.l Laew Enforcement Mem."). Those I could deal with, ok, kinda stupid mistakes, But that is just the start.
One important factor in my dislike of this map is it does not cover all of DC. DC being basically a 10 mile square, putting the whole place in a map should not be a problem, but they leave out probably about 1/3 of DC.
Places are marked incorrectly. The White House Visitors center is not in the commerce department, and I don't believe the national aquarium is either.
On the enlarged map, some of the Metro stations are in the wrong places. I stood where the metro was shown on the map and there was no metro there. It wasn't too far, but it was not where they put it. Also, the metro map (not the city map) indicates the blue line does not stop at Foggy Bottom or Farragut West even though it stops at both.
I was only in DC for 3 days and found all of these errors, I would bet there are more.
The map was usable but frustrating. Inaccuracies abound.

On the plus, it is pocket sized and is laminated. Still, not worth it. Moral of the story, Don't buy a DC map from people in Sarasota, Fl.

I would not buy it again.

This was the best source for helping us maneuver through the maze of buildings, monuments, and memorials in Washington, DC. The map is very functional. Flip it one way and you see the Metro, flip it another way you see the mall, still another and you have a DC area map. Since it's laminated, I kept it in my pocket while walking around and didn't worry about it getting sweaty or damaged. I really like the detailed names of the buildings and monuments near and around the national mall. Metro stops and streets are well marked. The next best thing to GPS.

We used this guide everyday of our trip to Washington, DC. The subway guide was especially useful. I never felt lost, and didn't waste any time trying to figure out where to go. It was such an important thing to have each day, we double checked each time we left the hotel to make sure we had it. I highly recommend it.

This map was a very helpful quick guide of Washington DC. It has the Metro stations clearly marked for quick reference when you don't want to "look like a tourist." I would definitely purchase the same type map for other cities.

This is a very nice map for giving an overview of the metro area, and the detailed view of the Capitol Mall is very nice. However, it is too small and hard to see for navigating around DC. For a visitor planning a trip and having a quick guide while walking around it is great, but for navigating while driving it is not well suited.
