T.M. Rives is a writer-photographer and occasional filmmaker who lives in New York City and works everywhere. You can see some of what he's up to at tmrives.com
This book is meant not so much for tourists, but for the local New Yorkers whose love for the city has faded somewhat maybe due to the overcrowded streets and subways, the delivery dudes that ride on the wrong streets, the overpriced movie tickets, the places that have been swarmed by Sex and the City geeks. Secret New York is meant to rekindle your love for this magnificent city, to remind you why New York is most probably the best metropolis there is. T.M.Rives will make you fall in love with NYC all over again. And that's a wonderful affair to start over.

Well I gotta say, when I was handed this book, I thought "I'll most likely just read my pages and this'll wind up in my book-that-I've-contributed-shelf." Not because I figured it'd suck, but because I've got thousands of books ahead of it and how awesome could a book about things in NYC really be anyway? But then I went ahead and read bits that popped out at me. And then, ah hell, go ahead and read it all - it's sooo damned good! A book about things in NYC REALLY CAN BE awesome! I absolutely LOVE this book! And I intend to actually visit many of these things. I'm learning a hell of a lot about where I thought I lived and even more about great writing.

Purchased as a Christmas gift for my husband, a native New Yorker, this little book is a real find. Although my husband is very knowledgeable about the architecture, history, and art of his hometown, he was amazed by all the new information T.M. Rives shares. There are descriptions of pocket parks, statues, unusual buildings, as well as historical tidbits and nice photographs packed into this easy to carry format. While Manhattan gets most of the coverage, it's worth noting that the other boroughs are also covered. This is a great addition to any New York collection whether you read it for entertainment or use it as a guide for exploring.

During the 1950s, the New York Times ran a human interest column called *About New York* composed by the great Meyer (Mike) Berger. A beat reporter of distinction, Berger put his skills to good use to reveal the back stories of the seemingly mundane aspects of New York City. As Random House was set to publish the best of these, Berger died unexpectedly and the book that emerged, *Meyer Berger's New York*, sadly served more as a testimonial to him. Today, Berger's words still regale his readers with the city he loved and was inspired by in ways personal and universal.
This said, I hasten to add that T.M. Rives follows in the Mike Berger tradition. *Secret New York, An Unusual Guide* does a similar take on New York's overlooked parts, which given the city's transformation since Berger's time is all the more impressive. Rives' attention to detail clearly puts *SNYAUG* high among recent narratives on the city, yet his writing, as witty as it is, falls short compared to Berger's straightforward prose. And those interested more in the outer boroughs might be put off by Rives' Manhattan-centric bias (which, to be fair, is often the case with most guidebooks on the city).
In sum, T.M. Rives carries Meyer Berger's torch a step further: Minor issues aside, *Secret New York* is a thoughtful guide for today's thoughtful New Yorker.
POSTSCRIPT: By sheer coincidence, in "Trinity Tombstone Riddle", Rives touches on a theme that piqued Berger interest also.

A dear friend and a dear nephew are both in love with New York City. They had never heard of this book before I gave it to them as Christmas gifts, and they both immediately dived into it, paging through and saying things like "I never knew about this!" and "Wait 'til I get back to the city! I'm going to go see this!" Do you have NYC addicts in your circle of friends? Buy them this book...it's smallish, portable, concise and fun. You'll be their favorite friend (or aunt!) from that point on.
