Rick Steves has spent 100 days every year since 1973 exploring Europe. Rick produces a public television series (Rick Steves' Europe), a public radio show (Travel with Rick Steves), and an app and podcast (Rick Steves Audio Europe); writes a bestselling series of guidebooks and a nationally syndicated newspaper column; organizes guided tours that take thousands of travelers to Europe annually; and offers an information-packed website (RickSteves.com). With the help of his hardworking staff of 80 at Europe Through the Back Doorin Edmonds, Washington, just north of SeattleRick's mission is to make European travel fun, affordable, and culturally broadening for Americans.
Rick Steves advocates smart, affordable, perspective-broadening travel. As host and writer of the popular public television series Rick Steves' Europe, and best-selling author of 40 European travel books, he encourages Americans to travel as "temporary locals." He helps American travelers connect much more intimately and authentically with Europe -- and Europeans -- for a fraction of what mainstream tourists pay.
Over the past 20 years, Rick has hosted over 100 travel shows for public television, and numerous pledge specials (raising millions of dollars for local stations). His Rick Steves' Europe TV series is carried by over 300 stations, reaching 95 percent of U.S. markets. Rick has also created two award-winning specials for public television: Rick Steves' European Christmas and the ground-breaking Rick Steves' Iran. Rick writes and co-produces his television programs through his company, Back Door Productions.
Rick Steves also hosts a weekly public radio program, Travel with Rick Steves. With a broader approach to travel everywhere, in each hour-long program Rick interviews guest travel expert, followed by listener call-ins. Travel with Rick Steves airs across the country and has spawned a popular podcast. Rick has also created a series of audio walking tour podcasts for museums and neighborhoods in Paris, Rome, Florence and Venice (with more tours, including London, coming in 2010).
Rick self-published the first edition of his travel skills book, Europe Through the Back Door (now updated annually), in 1980. He has also written more than 40 other country, city and regional guidebooks, phrase books, and "snapshot" guides. For several years, Rick Steves' Italy has been the bestselling international guidebook sold in the U.S. In 2009, Rick tackled a new genre of travel writing with Travel as a Political Act, reflecting on how a life of travel has broadened his own perspectives, and travel can be a significant force for peace and understanding in the world. Rick's books are published by Avalon Travel, a member of the Perseus Books Group.
In addition to his guidebooks, TV and radio work, Rick is a syndicated newspaper columnist with the Tribune Media Services. He appears frequently on television, radio, and online as the leading authority on European travel.
Rick took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. By the time he reached 18, Rick jokes, "I realized I didn't need my parents to travel!" He began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD), a business which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a well-traveled staff of 70 full-time employees. ETBD offers free travel information through its travel center, website (www.ricksteves.com), European Railpass Guide, and free travel newsletters. ETBD also runs a successful European tour program with more than 300 departures -- attracting around 10,000 travelers -- annually.
Rick is outspoken on the need for Americans to fit better into our planet by broadening their perspectives through travel. He is also committed to his own neighborhood. He's an active member of the Lutheran church (and has hosted the ELCA's national video productions). He's a board member of NORML (working to reform marijuana laws in the USA). And Rick has provided his local YWCA with a 24-unit apartment building with which to house homeless mothers.
Rick Steves spends about a third of every year in Europe, researching guidebooks, filming TV shows, and making new discoveries for travelers. He lives and works in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington, where his office window overlooks his old junior high school.
This is a nice guide to Barcelona. It's written in very conversational manner.
What I like are the walking tour routes. They are marked out with the city's key attractions and information. You can cover the whole of Barcelona with these routes depending on the number of days you have.
Besides tourist spots, the book also includes info on accommodation, food, shopping, night life and day trips from Barcelona. All these are provided with maps and places marked out.
It's a very helpful guide book.
ABOUT THE KINDLE EDITION: The maps are small. The road names are just barely visible if you scrutinize the map. You can still see the black location markers so I guess that's enough. The Metro map in the book is unreadable in Kindle format as it's too small. Grab the physical maps at the Metro station. I've also checked out Lonely Planet Barcelona and the words on their maps are even smaller.
Publishers should make their maps bigger for Kindle, even if they have to be printed section by section across a few pages. They are more helpful than a map you can barely see.

We found a nice little restaurant (Las Palmerias) using this guide, It was a nice small (20 tables or so) restaurant, where the owner was also your waiter.
For the big tourist attractions, this guide is less helpful. A trip to Montserrat, for example, was not helped much by this guide. We were shocked that Steve failed to find the tiny restaurant behind the train station (at the cable car station) that served a nice Sangria and tapas. Considering the food offerings at Montserrat were horrific (avoid the dining room, worse than Disney) it was a bit of an oversight.
But I think this is because this book doesn't concentrate on the big tourist attractions (which often are a big disappointment, anyway, unless you really enjoy standing in line and being jammed in with crowds of sweaty tourists).
If you like more of "off the beaten path" then this guide is useful.

I found answers to all the questions I had. I have seen Rick Steve's on TV and like his approach to travel. The yearly updates are good. Travel tips from what to wear, where to eat, what to see, historical background and much more practical information. This book should be easy to pack and carry with me while I travel.

We love Rick Steve's books and take his e-books with us every time we go to Europe. He really takes you around to the most important places. His restaurant reviews are amazing and so accurate.

I didn't really like this book as a travel guide. It's meant for someone who wants an itinerary already planned out for them. I would have preferred more background information on Barcelona and the culture and then maybe a more thorough history of the suggested sites. The choices of restaurants were also quite limited.

I'll be spending 2 days in Barcelona by myself prior to a tour. This gave me several ideas that will not be covered on my tour. There is so much to see in Barcelona, it's hard to decide the "must sees" from the rest...especially following the sites that will be covered on my tour. Also, I enjoy out of the way restaurants, where the locals eat.

We purchase the Rick Steves Barcelona book to research a planned visit to Barcelona. We have visited Barcelona once before, so have some ideas about things we want to see, but will be staying in a different location this time. We want to learn more about some places we only saw from the Hop-on, Hop-off bus before, but wish to visit this time. We buy whatever Rick Steves' book is available about a major city we will be visiting to help us plan our visit. His hints about short-cuts and pre-travel preparation have helped save us time and money on previous trips.

We had 2 full days in Barcelona at the end of a European vacation, and we used Rick Steves' Barcelona to determine the best places to go, things to see, and ways to get around during that time.
What differentiates Steves' approach is that, while being interested in conveying the history and context of the important parts of the city, he focuses on things directly applicable and useful to the traveler, in the moment, while they are there. Things like "where are the bathrooms" and "can I buy tickets for this online and skip the line" and "is this museum really worth it".
All of this makes Rick Steves' Barcelona a worthwhile digital guide to load on your tablet or phone and use while making your way around the city.
