We were traveling South America in early 2013 with the previous edition of SA On A Shoestring, which had been published in 2010. The information was so out of date that we picked up the new edition when it was released in August and continued our travels through South America with the new one in November 2013 - only to find that it's just as out of date as the previous version! Especially prices have not been adjusted at all, and some places that we truly loved and were thankful to have found in the 2010 edition are not even mentioned anymore (towns and regions, not restaurants/hostels!). Some of the general information on the countries in the book is seriously outdated and I regret having bought this new version - I should have gone for the Footprint or the Rough Guide, both of which I had looked at, too, and which seem much more informative and comprehensive.

I've never been super crazy about the Lonely Planet guides, but at the same time the ones I've used have been useful. I have used this one for every country in South America except Brazil. It's great to have city maps when you get to a new town. The opinions on the hostel/dining information seem to vary from person to person. I think if you're going to do your trip entirely according to recommendations in this book you would have a pretty good trip. The best way is to have this book handy and try to discover more on your own. You can definitely find cheaper and entirely reasonable options in almost every locale than what this book suggest. One thing I really wish they included in the book was the location of super markets on the maps. They give you locations of their recommended eateries, and I appreciate that. However, as someone who is typically really trying to travel on a shoestring, the location of supermarkets would be greatly appreciated. I think most backpackers or extended travelers are shopping for groceries more than they are going out to eat. That is my one major gripe with the book. Beyond that, it is mostly subjective based on how you travel and what your goals are. If it's your first time traveling, or first time traveling in Latin America, I would definitely recommend the book, at least to get your feet wet while you plan at home.

One tip, I bought this book in it's entirety and separated it by country. That way, if I go on a trip to maybe only three countries, I can just take the corresponding chapters. It lightens the load quite a bit.

Not as good as "on a shoestrings" used to be. For many places no information about Hostels, only costly Hotels listed. Do not rely on it as your only guide. Cross check with other books and Hostel-Booking Websites.
Doesn't seem to be updated to 2013 at several points.
Remember: it's a big continent in a relatively small book. If you spend more time in a particular country, you might want to get the corresponding book for more details.

I have travelled for years using Lonely Planets Books as a guide. I find them easy to use, direct info without a bunch of jargon other guides put in there pages, Lonely Planet has practical information on a Variety of places to stay, things to see or visit, Bus train Planes and Automobile info on how to get from A to B. The Maps are Informative and usually accurate. I'm not a deeply religious person but I call my Lonely Planet Travel Guide my Bible when I speak of it to others on the road in gest. Using the Kindle takes practice getting used to moving around through the book but the information is as valuable as ever for saving money and getting the most out of your Journey and its cheaper than the book by half. Its all about the money so you can stay on the road longer and having priceless information gives you the edge to do this...Have fun and be safe

I am traveling to some minor places in South America(Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname). Most guide books ignore these. This book has better summaries of these destinations than the Brandt books. Aside from that, Lonely Planet guides are kind of silly-things you can do if you stay in this little town for three weeks. Right........... Still, this is the best guide for these destinations, at least at present.

Good information but the Kindle version is difficult to search for places or topics. I would rather flip quickly thru a soft back book to fins a topic. I found that I was searching the internet or consulting WikiTravel offline instead of using the Kindle book.

A useful book in print where you can access countries and cities easily, in Kindle the navigation of 1,100 pages is with only a few road signs. Totally inadequate, skip this fiasco and stay with he print version.

I wasn't the hugest fan of how the maps were laid out, and some of the restaurants they mentioned where not very kind to even fluent Spanish speaking tourists... However it was an invaluable (albeit heavy) guide to have with me while traveling Peru and ecuador for 6 weeks
